E3 2020 Loses Another Key Company

The creative directors of the annual gaming show have dropped out.

Yet another big company has dropped out of E3 2020, marking just the latest shake-up for the annual gaming show in Los Angeles. [Update: Following reports suggesting it would be, E3 2020 has been canceled due to concerns involving the coronavirus.]

iam8bit, a creative services company that makes video game collectibles and was set to be the creative director of E3 2020's new format, has resigned from that post. The company said in a tweet that it pulled out of the show "with mixed emotions."

Now Playing: E3 2020 Is Officially Canceled - GS News Update

"It was a dream to be involved with E3. We wish the organizers the best of luck."

iam8bit did not share any additional details on why it chose to resign from its position. Keep checking back with GameSpot for the latest.

The Entertainment Software Association was working with iam8bit as one of its "creative partners" that was brought on for 2020 to help "reinvigorate" the show and "shake things up."

The ESA has since released a statement confirming iam8bit's departure and also stressing that the company is still planning for a good show with its other creative partners.

iam8bit dropped out of E3 2020 following the departure of Geoff Keighley, the games media veteran who hosted and organized the E3 Coliseum since 2017. For his part, Keighley said he decided to part ways with E3 "given what I know about the show as of today."

Additionally, PlayStation decided not to attend for the second year in a row. Microsoft is still planning to come to E3 in a big way this year as it will show off more of Halo Infinite and hype the Xbox Series X ahead of its release later this year.

In other news, Los Angeles County has declared a state of emergency. The ESA is closely monitoring the situation and will make announcements about E3 2020 as necessary.

They never really fully recovered from the 2006 announcement.

Before that, companies went just because "everyone went". As such, even when companies had nothing to show, they would still go solely because the paradigm was that "everyone went".

During the 2007-2008 debacles, companies found that they could go to other conventions (PAX, TGS, GDC), host their own shows, or just not go at all with minimal changes to their exposure and sales figures due to the growing presence of the internet.

While I doubt that E3 is going away any time soon, it's relevance isn't what it used to be and probably never will be again.

@thepyrethatburn: The history of E3 is a bit more complicated. At one time it was one of the largest in the world, and would seem to never end. I actually went to the 98' and 99' when technically it was not open to the public, booth babes was way pre-me2, and swag was some of the best there is.

It became to much of a spectacle, crowding, got worse and way too much pressure to show their wares publicly. People forget that E3 started so that brick and mortar merchandisers could meet secretly to view publishers wares and make decisions about what to sale come Christmas. Crazy idea now, but that was 25 yrs ago. Journalists helped and hurt, great to have your wares covered by the press, but many publishers came with beta products they did not want shown to the public or other publishers.

But now things are so different, with fewer brick and mortar stores, and those that are left do teleconferences. Journalists are embargoed to death. And fewer publishers/developers feel it is worth the expense and time (as booths and shows cost got into the millions) . E3 still gets covered with fond memories of days long parties, even a chance for some developers to even see a real woman. Now with corona virus, out breaks would actual attendance be worth it. Xbox and others can just have a press conference.

Good times, but so was the horse and wagon. Time to move on.

someone yells " im gonna sneeze" and it will send people scrambling. Things arent going to get any better until

1) A proven drug can help people fight the virus once caught ( at least 6 months out)

2) vaccine for everyone at no cost ( 18 months out)

so lets not kid ourselves, its gonna be some time til things normalize and at the moment due to the failures of our govt, we cant even test people in a timely or numerous manner. The shit has hit the fan

@totallytc: The information above sounds facebook informed, as the WHO and CDC have not even suggested the above. Things are not world ending, but people do need to be informed. https://www.cnn.com/audio/podcasts/corona-virus Facts so far.

@jenovaschilld: plus no one says this is world ending, but it is world alternating, Many businesses will go under and many people will die. A leading Hospital organization is now estimating 480,000 deaths in the US alone.

Dr. Richard Hatchett, who sat on the White House Homeland Security Council in 2005 - 2006 and was a principal author of the National Strategy for Pandemic Influenza Implementation Plan, and currently heads the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, told the UK's Channel 4:

"This is the most frightening disease I've ever encountered in my career, and that includes Ebola, it includes MERS, it includes SARS. And it's frightening because of the combination of infectiousness and a lethality that appears to be manyfold higher than flu."

@jenovaschilld: screw you, the above timelines were giving by multiple virologist and by the CDC itself. How about the learning the facts about whats going on before acting as if you do.

There are several groups racing to develop a coronavirus vaccine, but there is still a long road ahead. The CDC has estimated that a vaccine is unlikely to be ready in the next 12 to 18 months.

@totallytc: Well you seem to be all over the place, and the end of the world almost welcomed. With most of your information coming from the same people who suggest drinking bleach, I do not know how we will go on.

I do want to point out, that no one has made a solid timeline of determination of a vaccine timeline, estimation are just that, poor guesses. Which your original post needed background. As your second or third post reflects.. i guess.

Some takeaways... Get informed by legitimate news sources, (not Facebook, not your Uncle who heard from another guy), and practice common sense to all viruses: be prepared, practice good hygiene, stayed informed, stay home if your sick, and don't panic. If all bold helps you .... Don't Panic. The estimated death rate is also inflammatory as no model as of yet.... has predicated any death rates as it is too early. Yes, there will be a lot of deaths, no it is too early for guesses. A 3% WHO global est, does not mean that 3 children in your 100 kid grade school is surely gonna die.

Look i can do it too, a leading hospital organization (my buddy derek, who works with me in the education department of my hospital) also says that everyone should run out and buy guns and ammunition for the pending pandemic as society will surely breakdown and minorities will try to take over. Yeah, I don't listen to him either, nor should anyone here listen to totallytc or hell even me. Go an educate yourself and your family on this very serious virus that will affect America in many different ways. Also do not get your information from social media alone, or at all, or esp totallytc.

@jenovaschilld:

and before you say another stupid word. Are you really going to say you know better than the TOP infectious disease doctor in the country?

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, stepped in and made it clear that the US is still at least 12 to 18 months from developing a vaccine for the novel coronavirus.

@jenovaschilld: lets see you say I dont have I good sources, yet I quote the CDC itself, the leading org in the whole United States, I quote a leading virologist in the world, and I refer to a leading Hospital organization, YET you see it all as fake news. I get it, YOU'RE AN IDIOT.

I know Italy is in on it too right? they just quarantined the entire nation, but I know .. fake news....

@jenovaschilld: yes, its stands correct. Those assertions were taking from a CDC briefing last week. Fauci himself stated he thinks a therapeutic can be available within 6 months and you can see he has stated numerous times about the 12-18 months for a vaccine

sidenote- NY Gov also today just made it clear that he will be looking to make testing free to anyone in the state of NY and is working with insurance and medicare. The US congress has made it clear it is looking for ways to make the vaccine free when it is available in the future.

Again, you are WRONG, so stop digging the hole and embarrassing yourself.

Again Italy just quarantined its entire NATION, Let that sink in.

E3 forever baby! Why are ya'll bee atching over a celebration of our gaming passions, where we can all get together & be inspired by some of the new titles? There is no other feeling than the one you feel when you get something that you really want/like & are enthralled for and especially when your surrounded by like minded individuals.

E3 is a sort of choke point for revealing a lot of new trailers, demos and announcements all at once. it is just really convenient and yeah, that is cool to have, but we are getting those infos anyway via the youtubes of this world. so i'm not too worried about e3 slowly dying. i understand that for the attending companies a lot of preparation and money went into it, so of course at some point you have to ask yourself wether it's still worth it.

from a consumer pov, i live relatively close to Cologne, but i've never been to gamescom, cause it seems much more convenient to only watch what really interests you online and not spending hours standing in lines. i don't want to watch a trailer to a new pokemon or the annual call of duty.

on the plus side, some companies put a lot of effort into their presentations, which where fun to watch. but i don't watch full press conferences, i skip to the parts that interest me.

THE problem with E3 I believe is that we are pretty much DONE with the era of "physical". "Physical" games with a "physical" press and you MUST be there "physically". Not everybody can be in L.A. for E3 and MOST importantly not everyone COULD get in if they wanted to. On top of that people are ALWAYS skeptical of what they see that is presented given the HUGE amount of times people have been deceived in the past based on graphics, playability, multiplayer, etc. So even what you are shown cannot be given a "full face value" seal of approval. You CANNOT keep LYING to your fanbase (game companies you KNOW who you are) and expect them to come rushing every single time expecting them NOT to remember about what happened the time before. When a company has a reputation of not telling the truth MOST will not buy the game right away and are VERY unlikely to spend over a THOUSAND dollars on airfare, hotels, taxi fare, food, etc. Just to be disappointed when the final game or games come out. YouTubers are the only exception because most are given free airfare, hotels, taxi fare, etc. because they are considered to be "promotional" media which is pretty much the ONLY way most would ever go in the first place !!!

Regardless of how everyone feels about E3, but I think for the sake of public health this year's E3, Olympics, new Apple products, consoles and hardware releases should be either postponed or cancelled.

@saikowaifu2003: sure, if things keep developing as they are right now it'll be cancelled anyway. but to cancel it now would be too premature. it's still a few months away and maybe a vaccine will be developed sooner rather than later.

who needs E3 anyways?

we can still get all the latest news, trailers, and demo footage off the internet these days, so we can check out all the latest buzz surrounding more of the same games that will ship half broken with 40 gigabyte day 1 patches and DLC, complete with an arsenal of microtransactions, $50 vip memberships and season passes, deluxe super duper i'm special editions, with more of your remaining content locked behind a preorder 'bonus'. maybe if we're lucky they wont decide to start locking the online features behind a monthly subscription model, on top of xbox live and psn that we already pay for, in hopes of us gladly throwing money at our screeens for the privilege of being allowed to play the games we already paid full price and then some for

get hyped!

@struvokreborn: While I know you say all this due to built up resent over time, you wouldn't want to pay the price a game would have if the gaming industry wasn't constantly getting more popular and expanding. Games have been 60 bucks for the last 35~ish years all that extra "bonus" stuff is to make up for inflation, it's the most popular way a developer can make a profit. If not for all that "bonus" stuff we'd be paying 100$ for all our AAA games, or maybe more.

"full price" is a tricky beast to define in video games nowadays. I'd rather get my games at 60 to play and then determine whether i want to sink the other 40 in later. Glass half full. Cheers.

They need to relaunch E3 for the digital world. Have playable demos for people at home watching and is apart of E3. They need to involve a lot more to people that can't physically be there. Do it through Steam if you have to, they have free weekends all the time so this can be done during the event. What better way to build hype by getting a chance to play the game early like those who attend the show floor. Look at Nvidia's new GeForce Now service, they could essentially have a streaming service if the devs are worried of players keeping/pirating the demos.

A lot needs to change if they want to become the Superbowl for the games industry again. Other than that, they will eventually be killed off, Corona or not. This has been dieing out over the past few years.

@struvokreborn: I agree, using Corona virus as an excuse not to attend is just that, an excuse. The masses now have high speed broadband at their fingertips and consumer shows for video games are a dying breed along with, as you mentioned, physical magazines and disc based media. Publishers, developers and hardware manufacturers don't need a floor to showcase their goods, all they need to do is create a decent video, place it on YouTube and the rest is done for you.

We've been in the digital age for 60-70 years now and it seemingly is entering into it's golden era now.
