E3 2019: Jedi Fallen Order's "Thoughtful" Lightsaber Combat Kind Of Looks Like Sekiro

Think before you act.

EA Play kicked off with Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order, providing gameplay gave us our first look at what Respawn means by "thoughtful" combat. As many suspected, it almost looks Souls-like.

Cal has to strafe, dodge, and parry attacks that come his way. Like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, there's a posture/poise bar as well. On weaker enemies, one or two strikes of a lightsaber are all Cal needs to cut through the bar and kill his opponent. However, on stronger foes like the black-clad Purge Troopers, Cal has to slowly wear his foe's defensive posture down until he can deliver a final killing blow. Purge Troopers also sport unique weapons that are more of a match for a Jedi than a random, clumsy blaster.

Now Playing: Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order - Official 15 Minute Gameplay Premiere Demo | E3 2019

As a Jedi, Cal has access to Force powers to aid him in this regard, including Push and Lightsaber Throw. He can also rely on his fast Jedi reflexes to slow time and more easily deflect attacks and blaster bolts. Nothing in the trailer hints he has anything close to the destructive power seen in The Force Unleashed series, though. You can watch the combat for yourself in the gameplay trailer above.

Besides the core gameplay, we also learned more about Jedi Fallen Order's story and at least one familiar face that will appear: Saw Gerrera. The first look also suggested the appearance of droids at least similar to K2, from Rogue One.

Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order is being developed by Respawn--also responsible for Titanfall, Titanfall 2, and Apex Legends. Fallen Order is entirely single-player, with no microtransactions whatsoever--which is a pretty big surprise considering the publisher. Respawn has another Titanfall project in the works but it's been delayed to 2020 at the earliest so that the focus can remain on Fallen Order and Apex Legends' seasonal updates.

Fallen Order is the story of Cal Kestis, a Jedi Padawan that escaped Revenge of the Sith's Order 66. He hides from the Empire as a salvager, only to be discovered when he's seen using the Force to save his friend. Now on the run, Cal has to rely on his minimal training to escape from the masked Second Sister--one of Darth Vader's Jedi-hunting Inquisitors--and Purge Troopers. He won't be completely alone though, as Cal's journey across the galaxy sees him discovering a surviving Jedi Knight.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is scheduled to release for Xbox One, PS4, and PC on November 15.

Disney Star Wars basically killed any enthusiasm I would have had for this (which would have been massive before 2015). I never would have thought you could destroy an entire franchise I previously couldn't get enough of for me with just a single bad movie, but Rian Johnson proved me wrong. I guess I was "never a real fan". Whatever. Hard pass on this game.

@mdinger: I generally agree, but I'm more at the point of no more post ROTJ SW. What they did with Luke killed my enthusiasm for the sequels. I'll see how this looks, but it does look exactly like a TFU-esque game.

@Wraith3: Disney disrespected and/or killed every Original Trilogy core character (Lando is next on the chopping block), compounded by completely ignoring established lore (e.g. hyperspace ramming). I know from the "new fans" I should get over it and am just a "man-baby" because apparently Star Wars was always just "space wizards with laser swords for kids". And so I have. The franchise is dead to me now. Good job Disney, I guess.

God of War 3 in Star Wars skin with lower budget. Unimpressive.

Imagine a game where you play as the newly-created Darth Vader, hunting down the remaining Jedi as you try to adapt to the living hell you're encased within while gradually become more powerful in the dark side of the force under the tutelage and torment of a mocking Emperor Palpatine. It would easily sell ten million copies but screw that in the left nostril, let's make the same old generic crap.

@timthegem: That game doesn't work to well because in the terms of story, Vader doesn't have anything interesting to do between episodes 3 and 4 other than killing enemies of the empire.

Also Vader can't run and can't pull off lots of crazy moves so it will be a boring walking game.

Honestly, light saber combat should be weighty, in that one or two hits should kill you or your opponent. Previous Star Wars games where you're wailing on a boss with a light saber for five minutes were always painfully unrealistic.

@Thanatos2k: There was "one hit" mode in Jedi Academy if I remember correctly. It wasn't fun IMO.

@Vojtass: Sure, because that game was designed for you to be constantly swinging the saber everywhere trading blows. Obviously it's going to be bad that way.

Looks like Another Force Unleashed. That's not a good thing. This boy is a light side force user. Not a jedi.

@Blade_Runner_07: Force Unleashed was good though. Not Jedi Knight 2 good but good enough.

@Thanatos2k: I guess what's "good enough" for you is disappointment for me. As someone who still plays through Jedi Outcast and Battlefront II (2005) once a year, my standards are higher than this. Mark these words, Fallen Order will underperform at least critically.

@Blade_Runner_07: You have no idea if this game will only be on the level of Force Unleased or better. And I'd much rather play something on the level of Force Unleashed than a game like EA's Battlefronts, so if that's what they produce then things are on an upswing for EA....

But I mean, it's an EA game. I won't buy it regardless, but maybe it'll be on Steam at 1/5 the price years from now.

@Thanatos2k: If this game was a true "upswing" for EA, this gameplay would have been more universally impressive. The positive things you claim for this title are nearly identical to what I was hearing in 2017 after we got hands-on with Battlefront II EA. I'm not trying to target your words, I only mean to temper expectations.

Fallen Order looks like a spiritual successor to The Force Unleashed in the worst ways. It's going to be too focused on the main characters development and personal journey and wont feature a deep enough sandbox to play out the same scenario in multiple ways. They claim it's "thoughtful" but I do not believe them. It's very likely the gameplay will ultimately feel like the shallow tie-in sequences to the "film" that is the cutscenes. I would bet that critical reception will settle in the low 70% and it will feel like it was rushed to meet the release of the 2019 Star Wars film. Furthermore, I am confident it will be widely available at half the launch price within the first quarter of 2020.

I have a very good idea of how this game will turn out.

In a parallel universe where Sekiro does not exist, this swordplay would have stunned everyone. Don’t get me wrong, it looks pretty good! But man, had they only released it six months earlier...
