Dune Remake: First Images Of Sci-Fi Classic Remake Look Incredible

Timothy Chalamet stars in upcoming adaptation of the classic sci-fi novel, which releases in December.

Update: Even more Dune images have been released. Check them out here.

Frank Herbert's classic book Dune is one the most acclaimed sci-fi novels of all time, and a new movie adaptation is on the way. The movie is directed by Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049, Arrival) and it releases in December. The first image has been released.

The image comes via Vanity Fair, and it shows Timothy Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name) in the lead role as Paul Atreides. According to the article, it's from the start of the movie, and shows Atreides on a beach on his home planet of Caladan, shortly before he leaves for the spice mining planet of Arrakis. Check it out below:

Dune releases on December 18. It has a hugely impressively cast list, which includes:

  • Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica
  • Oscar Isaac as Duke Leto Atreides
  • Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck
  • Stellan SkarsgÃ¥rd as Baron Vladimir Harkonnen
  • Dave Bautista as Glossu Rabban
  • Zendaya as Chani
  • Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho
  • Javier Bardem as Stilgar

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Chalamet spoke about the character of Paul Atreides. "The immediately appealing thing about Paul was the fact that in a story of such detail and scale and world-building, the protagonist is on an anti-hero's-journey of sorts," he said. "He thinks he's going to be sort of a young general studying his father and his leadership of a fighting force before he comes of age, hopefully a decade later, or something like that."

Dune was previously adapted for the big screen in 1984. The lavish movie was directed by David Lynch and starred Kyle McLachlan, Patrick Stewart, and Sting. While it was a commercial failure, it has since gained a cult following.

The Sci-fi Channel (since re-branded Syfy) also produced a Dune mini-series in the early 2000s. There have been other unsuccessful attempts to get a new movie version off the ground, most recently with Patriots Day director Peter Berg at the helm.

I like a lot of these actors, but I just don't see them in the Dune Universe. For a movie like this, I would prefer to see lesser known actors and actresses if they closer match the original actors. Just my personal preference.

Dune was Kyle MacLachlan's first role from what I can tell. Sean Young was fairly new to the scene and Patrick Stewart seemed to had done a bunch of lesser known obscure work to that point.

I would say the biggest name in Dune at the time was Sting.

@seanwil545: I agree wholeheartedly with this. I'm nervous but hopeful about the cast.

The original was great. Why in the world do we need a remake?

@aross2004: Because A) it's being made by one of the best directors of the 2000s and B) it's allegedly a more faithful adaptation of the novels, which is something fans of the series have been clammering for for sometime. David Lynch is awesome and his movie is awesome but there is room for another adaptation. Especially considering it looks to be fairly different.

Based only on the pictures I've seen (IGN has more), I'm pretty happy with the direction of thing so far.

This was always going to be a very difficult story to adapt, but so far they seem to have the right people involved to do the books justice. I'm cautious, but looking forward to this.

@judaspete: The original movie completely nailed the adaptation.

Paul Atreides is suppose to be 15 years old, this dudes almost double the age lol

Whatever, it's basically impossible to put into movie format without sweeping changes. What's important is they get the themes and ideas correct I guess.

@uninspiredcup: Yes. 24 is indeed double 15.

@mezzanine58: "almost double the age"

When you try to do a snarky gotcha but end up doing it to yourself.

@walbo: He does, but still doesn't really look like a "boy", which goes into the idea of the story of him developing. Same problem with the 1980's movie, when it starts it's like he's already developed and wise to the world.

@uninspiredcup: The 2000 and 2003 adaptations also used an actor in his twenties at the time. The logistics of building the film around an early teenager would pose a much bigger challenge, I assume. Either way, i'd still rather see a young man instead of a teenager.

It's technically a reboot, but the only movie that was made before came out in the 80s, which most people haven't even seen, despite Dune being one of the most popular science fiction books of all time.

I was pretty surprised with how much I liked BR 2049, so my hype for this one is building quite a bit. Image looks great.
