DRM-Free Games Platform, GOG.com, Adds Mortal Kombat, Harry Potter Games

PC platform signs Warner Bros as a publishing partner; First wave of games available now, more to come in the future.

The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red's DRM-free digital distribution store GOG.com is making moves. Not long after launching a Movies section and reaching a deal with LucasArts to bring classic Star Wars games to the site, GOG has now announced its latest publishing partner, and it's a big one.

Thanks to a new agreement, PC games from Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment are now available through GOG. The first additions are Bastion, F.E.A.R. - The Complete Trilogy, LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4, LEGO Harry Potter Years 5-7, and the Mortal Kombat 1-3 Bundle.

All except the Mortal Kombat bundle are available for as much as 60 percent off, this week only. Head to GOG's website for more information and to buy the games.

GOG VP of business development and operations Oleg Klapovsky said more Warner Bros. games are coming soon, though he didn't mention any by name.

"We are very happy to see another of the gaming's juggernauts venture into the DRM-free waters with us," he said.

GOG's list of partners now includes heavyweights such as Electronic Arts, Activision, Ubisoft, and Square Enix, among others. In all cases, games sold through GOG feature no form of DRM whatsoever.

GOG.com turned six years-old in September last year. For more on the site's evolution, check out GameSpot's interview with managing director Guillaume Rambourg.

Because Middle-Earth Shadow of Mordor is a singleplayer experience, should we expect that too once all the DLCs are out of the way? I accept that DRM is pretty much required for multiplayer games as it provides the service platform, though singleplayer games have no excuse.

Midway made competent PC ports of Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Mortal Kombat 4, Hydro Thunder and San Francisco Rush The Rock: Alcatraz Edition. I hope all of those go up eventually.

Ah, the DOS versions of MK. It's been years. Really great ports for their time, but I didn't have much luck getting them to work. Bought MK1, and the floppies were erased. Bought MKII, and my Win98 pc refused to run it for no apparent reason. SO ANNOYING! It was years before I was able to play arcade perfect versions of the MK games at home.

I finally did get to play the DOS versions, and they were great... it just sucks I never could get them working back in the day. My first pc was a pile of crap.

Huge fan of GOG.com since the beginning... I still have boxes of hundreds of classic games somewhere in the basement, but having GOG.com put them conveniently on my virtual shelf is simply excellent.

...and MANY of them work just fine on my Android phone -- Heroes of Might & Magic 1 & 2 on long flights? Yes please.

Lego would probably never do it, but maybe one of those Lego knockoffs would.

Why can't other companies think like CD Projekt Red at least sometimes? GOG is such a huge success, in spite of having no DRM. It is such a boon for PC gamers.

And yeah, the success of GOG is like a slap to the faces of those (PC or console gamers) who claim all PC gamers are pirates.

As a person who pirates games often to make sure it runs well on my system I enjoy GOG because their games are VERY easy to pirate.

DRM drives people to piracy, and companies don't realize that. There are artists that have given away their music for free and made 19 million just off donations. People like the lax, no uptight approach. Not one where everything is locked down, like steam in many ways.

>People like the lax, no uptight approach.

Oh, really? If that is so then why do most PC gamers enjoy using Steam and some gamers in general use consoles which is an extreme form of DRM.

They are basically the only place. Their prices are so cheap that people endure the DRM. This is one of the reasons I am not a PC gamer, even though I have a very capable PC. You have to set to offline mode before your go offline, even on the main PC. Also, most physical copies require a DRM key. Neither of these things exist on console, the so called extreme form of DRM.

<< LINK REMOVED >> What? Steam isn't the only place to buy games. There's GMG, GOG, Origin, etc.

>You have to set to offline mode before your go offline, even on the main PC.

And? It's two clicks if you have internet and if you don't you automatically log into offline-mode.

>Neither of these things exist on console, the so called extreme form of DRM.

If you're trying to say consoles don't have DRM then you're mistaken. The last time I checked you can't play a Xbox game on a Playstation or use a Playstation on a Xbox. On PC you can use both controllers and more and you can play your games on any PC.

>Also, most physical copies require a DRM key.

I can't say anything about this but I'm pretty sure you're wrong. Besides, why would you buy a physical PC game in the first place?
