Dota 2 Now Requires Your Phone Number To Play Ranked Matches

Hotline twink.

Valve has released a new update for Dota 2 which it says is focused on "improving the matchmaking experience" in the popular multiplayer game. One of the major new changes is a requirement that asks players to register a phone number to play in ranked online multiplayer matches.

"Players using multiple accounts create a negative matchmaking experience at all skill brackets, so our goal is to add just enough friction to this process that the number of players doing this will be noticeably reduced," it explained in a blog post. "Having more players using their primary accounts will have a positive effect on both Ranked and Unranked Matchmaking."

Now Playing: Dota 2 Video Review

From April 20, players have two weeks to register their mobile phone number. However, from May 4, accounts that do not have a phone number linked to it will no longer be able to participate in ranked play.

Phone numbers can be unlinked from an account so that a new one can be swapped in, but there is a three-month waiting period before the original number can be tied to a new account. This, Valve says, "is to prevent using the same number on multiple accounts." Valve adds that "online services that provide phone numbers are not allowed."

The update also brings back the Solo Queue, so players in ranked matchmaking can opt to only be matched up with other solo players. "Any player who selects this option will be placed into matches where all ten players are queuing solo," Valve explained.

Tweaks have also been made to the way undesirable behaviour is dealt with in matchmaking.

"Being marked for low-priority matches now results in a duration-based ban from the Ranked queue, in addition to the current game-count-based low priority requirement. The ban will start at a low threshold of a few hours, and increase up to four days for players who are very frequently in low priority."

Valve has also improved detection for "clear cases of intentional feeding," which involves players sacrificing themselves to the enemy so the opposing hero can accrue experience and power quicker. Additionally, bot detection has been improved.

Finally, Valve has made ranked matchmaking unavailable in South Africa, India, and Dubai because their "low populations made them prime targets for various Ranked Matchmaking abuses."

"For the time being, players in these regions will need to join Ranked Matchmaking queues in one of the other nearby supported servers. ... We will update these servers as the unranked populations in these regions grow to the critical mass needed to be able to support splitting the user base into Ranked and Unranked queues."

In December 2016 Dota 2 received a massive overhaul that reworked the game's HUD, refined the map, hero console, top bar, and shop. The Monkey King, who is based on Sun Wukong, was also introduced in this patch. Dota 2 continues to be one of the most popular titles on Steam and currently has the most number of active players.

Valve is just cutting down on more of the BS that players try to get away with, I like it.

It sounds hilarious, I mean just the headline by itself would sound so messed up to someone who doesn't know about this stuff. :)

So how many accounts are we speaking of per player for those who abuse it? Prepaid phone cards are cheap and available to anyone and unless they send a code to your phone before each match I don't see how that would change anything. Just switch out the phone cards or get another one or more throwaway phones and you can keep going as before. But you'll probably just have to enter your number once and that's it anyway.

Interesting so if this was 5-6 years ago I couldn't play this game because I didn't own a cell phone. Once in a while I still consider getting rid of my cell phone and I have a few friends without cell phones, not everyone needs instant communication to everyone who feels like talking to them that they need a phone attached to them.

I know most people have cell phones but requiring a cell phone to play a game in ranked mode is just annoying.

@nedrith: Everybody has been having a cell phone for way more than 10 years now. You don't need to stay glued to it all the time or to pester your friends cause you're bored but there's no reason not to have one. Not if you can get a cheap one for a 100 bucks or less.

And don't they sell actual throwaway phones in the US for a couple bucks? I remember hearing about that several years ago.

I don't own a cell phone but I don't play this game. But really no game should require you to own a cell phone to play.

Valve's repeated attempts to strong-arm customers into adopting their ridiculously intrusive safety measures just so that they won't have to hire dedicated customer service representatives is outrageously greedy. Ignore their excuses, the bottom line is that rampant phishing scams over the years have brought to light the issue that is their piss poor customer service department (which has since received an F from the Better Business Bureau) being incapable of keeping up with all of the victims, so they added the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator to prevent accounts from being stolen as easily.

It's sad to think that they were once considered to be pioneers of the gaming industry who offered unprecedented service, innovative software, and superior value. Nowadays Valve's only relevance lies with their Digital Distribution platform Steam, which only remains successful due to its legacy install base and lack of any direct competition.

Uh... Valve...? We're not in South Korea with the online gaming business! I know they might want to reduce "noise" like try with the removal of Greenlight on Steam, but this will flop harder than a Magikarp!

@Bamda: Yeah, but still. They can apply different rules depending in which part of the world they are in. However, it's true it would look weird to do this to a specific location only. Anyway, must have been critical for them to resort to this.

And completely unrelated.

Kinda funny that a year later, PUGB beat DOTA 2 in popularity. Still can't freakin believe it...! I wonder if DOTA 2 will go back on top.

Why it won't work as expected:

1) People can have multiple numbers
2) I can input my dad's / mom's / uncle's / whoever's number that I know doesn't play, since if I've understood correctly, you won't need to input a code which will be sent to your cellphone every time you want to login.
3) Someone may not have a cellphone for whatever reason
4) This could lead to serious privacy issues if someone somehow got hold of one's phone number from their dota account.

@Dark_Mits: The number used is the same for your steamguard, only way your number could be leaked is if you gave it away. You already gave your number away if you actually use steam, enabled steamguard and trade on a regular basis.

Am pretty sure Valve didnt say it but they are locking down onto IP as well so people using sandboxie will get flagged. And this was only the initial update since Kiev is around the corner, probably going add more features to this new update after Kiev.

Its 2017 if you dont have any type of phone just go live to an amish commune.

@s1taz4a3l: Still pointless as anyone can buy a cheap phone and a prepaid card just for this, even if they did send codes to your phone that you needed to type in before starting a match. For someone who's been cheating before this wouldn't be an issue.

Although I wonder what the point of it is. Just the usual ego stroking of making it to the top without having earned it or are those guys actally making money from it somehow, like from tournaments? Not that guys who cheated their way up the ranks would stand any chance there I assume.

@Atzenkiller: the cheapest phone is at least $10+ but the plan to turn it on is at least $40, so you telling us that people are going to spend $50 per line to cheat? LOL

@Bamda: Are you a time traveller? I don't know how things are in the US or wherever you live but here in Germany I'm paying 10€ per month for a phone and sms flat plus plus a few hundred mb of bandwidth. You'd have to be a moron to pay 40 bucks per month just to be able to use your phone if you don't need a few gb of bandwidth.

This proves it. Online gaming is about as fun as doing taxes.

Next, they will require you to barcode your right hand or forehead.

On topic, this is stupid as it cuts out anyone who doesn't have a cell phone (yes there are still some of us out there) from participating in ranked play. Then again Valve has always lived in their own little bubble detached from real world needs and wants.

@dlCHIEF58: surely if you don't have a mobile phone you are the one that lives in a bubble detached from the real world . . . while not everyone needs the latest and greatest even my grandma has one for emergencies or just so people can get a hold of her on the go =/ theres no real excuse to not own one anymore hell in the UK you can get a basic mobile phone for like £10 >_>

@uchihasilver: Depends if it blocks Google numbers. If it's just the phone, fine, go find a used one. However a lot of services like this block Google numbers, of VOIP numbers, and want "authentic" numbers from cell phone carriers. I've honestly debated dropping my cellphone coverage because it costs too much, even for just basic needs. Plus if you have a smartphone most companies wont let you not pay for data.

@uchihasilver: No there are plenty of valid reasons not to own a cell phone. There is no reason to to have people contact me wherever I am, if they want to reach me they can call me at home or work. Also I have no desire to add another bill that is quite unnecessary, as that money can be used for more important things. Then there are privacy concerns, no reason to carry around a GPS tracker, camera and microphone to be followed or spied on by whatever government agency. I also have no desire to have a microwave transmitter near my head or genitals for any length of time.

The real world is not found in or with a cell phone, but rather is out there without one.

@dlCHIEF58: okay okay calm down and put that tin foil hat back on . . . God I hope you're never in an accident with no one around so the scary emergency services can't find you Jesus Christ get a grip and another bill? Oh no because getting a pay as you go phone and barely ever topping it up is so expensive -_- seriously your excuses are paper thin the pros far outweigh the cons and hears a thing you know you can walk around the real world without being glued to a phone right? Also government tracking you . . . Your on the damn internet it ain't that hard

@dlCHIEF58: Cell phones use radio waves which are literally all around regardless whether you own a cell phone or not, so they're not harmful. Apart from that, I can understand your argument. I only really use my cell phone to text/call friends and whatnot and barely use any apps or anything.

Uh, this probably slows it down but it isn't going to fix much. I'm pretty sure phone numbers are so easy and cheap to get these days that many people have multiple. I hope this isn't a ploy for Valve to sell our numbers to telemarketers.
