Doom Eternal Next-Gen Patch Out Now On Xbox Series X|S, PS5, And PC

You can look forward to higher resolutions, better frame rates, and ray tracing support across the board.

40 Comments

Doom Eternal's next-generation patch is finally out for Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC, bringing enhanced performance and ray tracing to the high-octane, demon-slaying shooter. The free update will give you three new gameplay modes on consoles, while players on PC can make use of certain features based on their hardware.

On the latest consoles, Doom Eternal can now be played with Balanced, Ray Tracing, and Performance presets. Balanced, despite its name, prioritizes visual fidelity, offering the highest dynamic resolution possible while still sustaining 60fps. Ray Tracing reduces the resolution but offers fully ray-traced reflections, which adds a new visual flair to the action. Performance reduces resolution even more for the game to reach 120fps.

Now Playing: Doom Eternal Video Review

All three modes are available for Xbox Series X and PS5, while only Balanced and Performance will be offered on Xbox Series S. Additionally, only Xbox consoles will feature Variable Rate Shading and Variable Refresh Rate support. Here's the specifics for each platform:

Xbox Series X

  • Ray Tracing Mode running at 1800p/60fps
  • Performance Mode running at 1800p/120fps
  • Balanced Mode running at 4K/60fps

Xbox Series S

  • Performance Mode running at 1080p/120fps
  • Balanced Mode running at 1440p/60fps

PlayStation 5

  • Ray Tracing Mode running at 1800p/60fps
  • Performance Mode running at 1584p/120fps
  • Balanced Mode running at 4K/60fps

On PC, Doom Eternal will also be updated to include ray tracing support for compatible GPUs. If you own an Nvidia GPU, you'll also be able to take advantage of new DLSS support, letting you reduce the internal resolution for big performance gains.

The Doom Eternal update is free to all owners of the game on the respective platforms and is out now.

OK, I played the new Doom Eternal patch on both my PC and XSX. Here are my observations...

On the PC, with an RTX 3080, ray tracing lowers my fps down to ~250 fps or so at 1440p - DLSS not needed. It looks gorgeous. I did notice some funky triangles appearing in fireball smoke trails. But all in all, awesome.

On the XBX, I tried the 60 fps mode with RT and the 120 fps mode with no RT and 1800p. Both are awesome since the TV has HDR. The 120 fps mode was like playing on a FAST pc. The RT mode was beautiful and 60 fps was not too bad after a few minutes of play. Interesting that the same smoke trails that had problems on the PC, were fine on the XSX.

Conclusion... Either is awesome. For the first time ever, I feel like PC and XSX both can offer a perfect experience. I need to check to see if there are updated Nvidia drivers since that may fix the pc problem. Not gonna bash any platform since it's prolly great fun on all.

One big downer for me - you can't use your old save. I found it very hard to complete on my PS4.PRO, but did eventually. Some upgrades let you use your previous gen save file. Ah well, back to the drawing board.

@johnny0779: Just statistics on paper. All three consoles gonna have some significant visual downgrades to achieve that. If pixels are your bag, I'd look into a PC :)

@larrybelafonte: graphical resolution is NOT "statistics"...those are facts....we upgrade to newer consoles for a reason.

If pixels aren't your bag, I'd look into a PS2.

@johnny0779:

I simply mean there's no relevant context there to make any claim from - if you cap based on some numbers you risk devaluing your own point. It's written spec - the article even mentions using VRR on Xbox suggesting frame rate may be variable, i.e a statistic may have been given.

...and tbh ps1 is more golden era pixels - I've got a nice little raspberry pi to handle that. ;)

I wonder if any extra performance comes with this patch.
My GTX 970 is getting a bit long in the tooth.
It can't quite muster 120fps on this one.

Awesome. Been waiting for this. Just got round to finishing Doom 2016 so now it’s time for Doom Eternal. Will definitely be playing the raytracing mode on my XseX. Thank God for Gamepass too. In the past Doom for me was but a passing interest but after the 2016 game I’m all in. And with Gamepass I don’t have to spend a cent other than the sub fee of course. Firing it up right now.

@silv3rst0rm: Sony's biggest problem isn't that it can't do it with the PS5. It can but they won't release updates that their flagship TV's can't support. It would be a disaster. Their TV's a mess for gaming vs LG's because their focused on video quality and image processing. They also won't release control of the image processing to 3rd parties, which is why we don't have Dolby Vision.

@silv3rst0rm: And, they're lucky that besides the numbers on paper. There is no difference between 1584p and 4k in motion.

@illegal_peanut: My big problem is that people are far more willing to give Sony a pass on a lower resolution but then try to cut down the Xbox even when they're offering a superior experience (regardless of how marginally better).

@silv3rst0rm:

Look it’s got to be expected ps5 just doesn’t have the power of the XseX. It’s only going to get worse for ps5. The differences are going to get even more pronounced and obvious as the gen progresses.

No VRS on ps5 which is an RDNA2 feature. No VRR either.

@gamerbum: I don't feel there's ever going to be a big enough difference between the systems to be a deal breaker either way. Sony will find ways to highlight its best features as will the Xbox.

@gamerbum:

I'd probably be inclined to disagree with you based on what we've seen. Sure the XseX has a raw GPU advantantage on PS5, but the difference between those consoles is insignificant in comparison to the XseS, and that's probably going to have some caveats for the whole gen (PS5 included).

No comment on VRS, but thus far is VRR actually that game breaking? Most games are coming out smashing rock solid frame rate targets.

Let's be realistic, it's gonna amount to a small performance boost and slightly higher pixel counts like we can see here. If thats really your bag, I'd probably hit up the PC market.

Well I tend to disagree. I think as the gen goes on the difference in power will become more obvious in the games.

@gamerbum: You'd hope so, but it's gonna be the same on both sides probably, and who knows what will happen with the mid gen hardware refresh. Gonna be a lot of different machines for devs to optimise for. They're both solid machines right now either way.

@gamerbum: You don't even need VRR for the PS5. People have been making this same idiotic argument since the PS2. It's not a PC so you can't look at the physical specs the same way to predict what it can and can't do. Just look at some of the games that were released on PS4. Sony does so much more with proprietary software than Xbox so it doesn't matter about RDNA2. Even if Sony made a low-end PC clone like the XSX, the Series S existing alone further supports that it has more than enough power. I'm not even sure I can think of a single game that runs better on my XSX vs. PS5 and there definitely isn't anything even remotely close to the new PS5 exclusives on my XSX to compare. The only game I can think of is Gears 5...a game that came out 3 years ago?

Nice, I was getting desperate for something new to play on either next gen console until I can refresh my PC. Disappointing how Sony delayed so many titles so they could make PS4 versions...and don't even get me started on the other dumpster fire. Seems like we're replaying more old games than anything new after buying these new systems.
