Dissecting the Early Details of Dead Space 3

E3 2012: The third chapter in the Dead Space series takes it in a new, action-packed direction. We get an early look at what's to come.

Like those pesky necromorphs, Dead Space 3 is evolving into something different. During our hands-off demonstration, the developers emphasized the game's "high-quality, epic action!" "Epic set-piece bosses!" and "High action intensity!" But how will this new direction impact the horror and tension of previous Dead Space games? We got to see it all in motion, but the short answer is that this game looks very different from its predecessors. The Lost Planet comparisons run deeper than just the snowy setting.

The demonstration covered the events leading up to the giant drill scene from the previous presentation. It opened with series protagonist Isaac Clarke waking up in an icy cave on the world Tau Volantis, supposed homeworld of the mysterious Marker. In these early scenes we saw a glimpse of classic Dead Space action: slow-paced tension accented with shocking monster attacks. However, this style quickly transitioned to something new with the introduction of cooperative play and human enemies.

Isaac's partner in crime is Earthgov Sergeant John Carver, a hard-nosed military man focused on eliminating the growing necromorph threat and who doesn't give a flip about Isaac's obsession with his (possibly) dead girlfriend, Nicole Brennan. The second player can drop in or out whenever Isaac dies or crosses a checkpoint. However, that second player needs to be connected via the Internet since local co-op is a no-go. Certain scenes will also change depending on whether Isaac is alone or with Carver. Carver cannot replace Isaac if you are playing by yourself.

Human enemies are exactly what they sound like: crazed Unitologist members obsessed with (a) the Marker and (b) killing Isaac. In the firefight we saw they fought with automatic weapons, used cover, and loved to throw grenades. Isaac could throw those grenades right back using kinesis, much to their surprise. Isaac and Carver could also use cover, though it's not the traditional sticky cover seen in games such as Gears of War. Instead, you either stand (or crouch) near a piece of cover, and when you go to fire, the character will automatically peek out and fire over it.

We still have a lot of questions about the nuts and bolts of co-op, but we were able to gain some early insights. Senior producer David Woldman confirmed we have nothing to fear from friendly fire--friends don't dismember friends! If a teammate goes down, the other player can revive him, provided his body is still intact. Previous Dead Space games have had some gruesome deaths, so if your character eats a mouthful of acid, there's not much the other can do. Our big question mark is how items and inventory will be handled: will it be shared, or individual? All Woldman would say is that those details are still in the works.

No Caption Provided

Between the massive boss fights, the constant banter between Isaac and Carver, and cover-based, third-person shooting, Dead Space 3 looks like a very different game from its predecessors. Granted, the game is still in development, but based on what was shown, the addition of cooperative play has seriously changed the tone of the game away from the traditional horror. We'll be sure to keep an eye on how this game develops, but until then, know that Dead Space 3 will be released on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC in February 2013.

I really want to like DS3, but it just sounds like a sell out the more I read. I don't want co-op, I don't need multi-player, I want a dead space experience. In EA, no-one will hear our cries!

@Justinps2hero Why would you not want CO-OP? I think companies need to focus more on providing a CO-OP experience. It adds enormous value to a game.

Read up. Coop is completely optional and the story will play out differently on whether or not you play single player or coop.

Why can't they can't create new series? Crysis 2 was not a bad game is just that it was not a Crysis! Same here. DS 1 and 2 have great sens of threat, movement limitations was such a great idea! This demo looks more like... Like everything we've already seen before but "all in one". Thats not too good. After this demo where enemies seems stupid as hell, and Isaac is moving like Nathan Drake I don't think I'm going to play it. Not if it's going to be called Dead Space 3

Loose the assault rifles, bring back the more creative armoury of DS 1+2. Get friendly fire in. If the player is thick enough to shoot their co-op partner having a consequence of that might teach them to aim better.

Please, whoever is playing the demos in the videos, quit rolling for no reason. Perhaps if you used a mouse you'd hit something as well...

So far so Deadgearsoflostunchartedspaceplanet.

Not cool.

And thus Dead Space now goes the way of Resident Evil.

So much for this generations...well, Resident Evil.

I think people are overreacting to the co-op thing, I know how people feel that all resources should go towards making sure the single player is as good as it can be, but if you think multiplayer would ruin Dead Space then you might have really hated Dead Space 2.....

@brylynt Im pretty sure co-op is OPTIONAL cutscenes are diffrent ect ect. core is single player although will have action will be more horror comparitive to the high octane co-op sort of like what the new aliens is trying to acheive fact is if you want to play horror don't go straight for co-op thats what i will do. (although i might be dragged into it by my friends.) plus this is just a small preview for a game that wont be complete for another 11 months.

There are plenty of action games out there, why ruin another survival horror game. Thank you so much Call of Duty for selling so well and convincing all the other developers to follow your lead.

Very glad to hear that co-op is not necessary and that you're not stuck with an AI partner as this ruined Resident Evil 5 in my opinion. I really love the Dead Space series but I'm not so sold on this so far. I want a Dead Space game not a Gears of War/Lost Planet mash-up. I hope that there's a lot more of the game in close confines with the isolation and anticipation of something about to happen that we haven't seen so far. The first two games were great so I have confidence that this will be good but time will tell.

when dead space 2 came out i was very sceptical for the first few chapters. I didn't appreciate the change in colourful visual and increase in action. BUT, the horror and isolation came back in, and some of the visuals were amongst the best on any platform. Revisiting the abandoned ishimura was quite easily the most terrifying game experience I've ever played.

I do NOT like the look of this trailer, but I have faith in the developers that they are genius enough to not make the mistake Capcom did with resident evil and remove the unique selling points that the first two were all about. I need more info.

At least you can play solo if you want, but from what I have seen of the new weapons, it seems like ammo isn't as much of an issue as the previous installments. It seems like they are trying to make this more like a Gears game (despite any cover differences). It wouldn't be an EA game if it didn't try to ruin something within a game that was successful.

Silent Hill also completely sucks and receives medicore ratings. Stop complaing about changes in game formula. Not changing it would make it a Call of Duty.

They are also going down the RE route and going away from survival horror to crazy 3rd person action. The second deviated a little but it was still very much there. I feel this game won't even be scary. Hello RE 5.

@jayd02 I agree, but if we are going to be fair here it was RE4 that started the series down the path to derpdom. RE5 had its flaws, but all were present in RE4.

@n64nut This is somewhat true. RE4 still scared me at moments. It was also much more deep and involved then 5 was. I remember going through the first 2 chapters of 5 looking for all of the herbs to find out there were only two. 5 was flawed in so many ways. 4 was perfect to me but that is coming from someone who only watched the first three be played through because I didn't like the camera.

So now we can connect to the internet and we take away all local capabilities? Why make the system with 4 ports then I mean since no games will ever use them then what is the point? This is really irritating to me because what if I can't connect and I want to play with a friend who is RIGHT NEXT TO ME? There are so few games out there now that actually support local co-op and it is so stupid.

*sigh* The action in DS2 was at least tempered by some creepy stuff. I had high hopes that DS3 would go back to the horror that DS1 had, albeit in a different manner. I am very, very disappointed in this. The co-op would have been cool in a true horror setting. But now it looks like we are getting Resident Evil 5... IN SPAAAAAAAAAAAAACE!!!

@GrimJesta That sucks, I would have loved to play together with my brother.

None of my friends have the same systems I have and I don't like playing with strangers.

So Co-op is basically nonexistent for me. At Least Boarderlands 2 knows what I want

Its a shame, i love this franchise. As long as the single player has the same intense horror, were ok, and also it would be awesome if the coop can be playable on local

@zsoujiro It is likely, to be less scary then DS2, and DS2 was less scary then its previous installment. Also, I would advice to play the game single player first, then take on the coop ( if you like ) with a friend in hard-mode/hardcore for fun. At least, that's how I plan on approaching this. I am a big fan of this franchise, and I do hope EA haven't compromised it, if they have, this will be the last time they get my money. :)

@Bhemont The change is not a bad thing per se, but I do MISS my horror games. Really, I miss games like Fatal frame 2, Silent Hill 1, 2 and 3, Clock Tower, Siren, Haunting Ground, The old Resident Evil, etc. Having said that, I still enjoy Resident Evil and Im sure Im gonna enjoy DS3.

EA don't develop Dead Space, they publish it meaning they fund it's development, they don't have a say in what the game is going to be like, the lead game designer is who comes up with the story and designs. EA don't suck either seeing that they are the largest and wealthest publisher in the gaming industry.
