Disney Plus Password-Sharing Crackdown Might Be Coming

The number of users sharing accounts is "significant," Disney CEO Bob Iger says.

Like Netflix before it, Disney is seemingly getting serious about cracking down on password-sharing for its Disney+ streaming service. During the company's latest earnings briefing, Disney CEO Bob Iger said the company is "actively exploring ways to address account sharing."

Subscriber agreements that include "additional terms" and updates to "sharing policies" will launch later this year. The executive added that Disney will "roll out tactics to drive monetization" in 2024, The Verge reported.

Iger declined to share a specific number as it relates to people sharing accounts, but said it is "significant." Netflix, meanwhile, said it had 100 million accounts that were sharing passwords until it cracked down and started charging fees.

Iger said Disney sees this as an opportunity to "help us grow our business," adding that cracking down on password-sharing is a "real priority" for the company.

Netflix saw a massive uptick in subscribers after cracking down on password-sharing, and Disney is likely looking for a similar result from its own methods.

Disney is also looking to make more money from Disney+ by charging more. A price hike for Disney+ has been announced, and it will see the ad-free plan jump from $11/month to $14/month, while the ad-free version of Hulu will go up from $15/month to $18/month. These price hikes go into effect on October 12.

A $20/month ad-free bundle that includes Disney Plus and Hulu will launch on September 6. The ad-based Disney and Hulu plans are not getting any price increases.

The next big release on Disney+ is the Star Wars TV series Ahsoka, which premieres on August 22.

At this point just cancel Disney+ and put it all on Hulu. Only reason Disney+ was made was because they at the time didn't have full control of Hulu which now they do.

@stunningham: Why would they go for the lesser household name of the 2? "Disney" would be the better brand name I would think...

Well, first of all, thanks to all those people who caved to Netflix when they cracked down on password sharing. I know all the "good news" surround that "success" was closely watched by every other big streaming service, and now we're going to see more of them "safely" implement it. All because they know that streaming customers (in general) are pushovers.

Nothing like asking for more money for less. But hey, maybe this will eventually push people to more convenient ways to get content 😋

@m4a5: Were you expecting some sort of "streamers rise up" moment? That's absolutely hilarious. The average person isn't going to refuse to cough up a few bucks for Netflix and start pirating films just on principle. That kind of behavior is reserved for terminally online people.

@pattyboy106: It's pretty sad that you are fine with people paying more for less and encouraging big companies to keep pushing the boundaries for profit.

You keep licking their boots, I'll keep voting with my wallet.

@m4a5: my god a guy can't pay for something with his own money these days without some dumb chud calling him a boot licker. How about you not get so bent out of shape about how I vote with my own wallet?

🤣🤣🤣 Boy I hit a nerve, you must've been one of those people who got kicked off of a shared account and had to pay more. And now you're looking to justify that to me (hint: I don't care to hear how you're not a pushover) after you realize it wasn't the best move.

Remember, you went out of your way to reply to me about how you pushovers shouldn't be expected to have principal lol

@m4a5: So I’ve had a Netflix account for six years now and you’re mad about it. I hit the bullseye when calling you terminally online😆

@pattyboy106: Nice deflect.

But tell me, what was the main point of this convo again? I'll give you a hint: It's also a part of the article title 😉
