Devs create Oculus Rift guillotine simulator

Independent developers create virtual depiction of execution by decapitation during recent game jam.

A group of developers have created a guillotine simulator using the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset. As demonstrated in the video below (via Kotaku), players bend over as if they were to be executed by decapitation as they watch a blade fall and their virtual head roll around on the ground.

No Caption Provided

The simulator was made in two days during the recent Exile Game Jam by Erkki Trummal, André Berlemont, and Morten Brunbjerg. It is not clear if the developers are shopping the demo around of if it was made simply as an exploration of the Oculus Rift technology.

The Oculus Rift is a 3D virtual reality headset, with screens for each eye offering large viewing angles. The headset's sensors support low-latency head tracking, allowing users to move their heads to actually look around the game's world with supposedly little in-game delay.

The headset was a runaway success on Kickstarter, rocketing past its original $250,000 funding target and ending last year with more than $2.4 million from 9,500 backers. Development kits are shipping now, though retail kits have not been dated yet.

For more, check out GameSpot's interview with Oculus designer Palmer Luckey.

This is a very creative way to do something interesting in just 48 hours. I applaud the devs who thought that up. Its a conversation piece if nothing else.

Open your eyes people. This is another move to desensitize you from that fact that they will eventually reveal the real Guillotine. They are preparing you to get your head chopped off.

Honestly, I think the rift being used to explore otherwise impossible things like this could be very interesting. Obviously not all ways to die. But just curious things we've never thought of. I think this creation is intelligent.

This reminds me of a guillotine reenactment I saw as a kid at the London Dungeon. It was mostly dark and when the blade came down they misted the audience with a quick spray of water--it freaked out my whole family. So if you ever want to really scare a friend with this tech demo, remember to have a squirt bottle ready.

There's great potential in this device for an alien abduction game. "I never asked for the anal probe!"

I feel all the naysayers entirely missed the point of this video. The fun behind it is the fact that it tricks your brain. The guillotine is simply a creative device to make the wearer feel disembodied, which in turn really freaks these people in the video out. It's just a surprisingly effective prank on the human brain. If you understand it, it's easy to see why the folks in the video reacted the way they did, and I applaud them for having fun with it.

@SpacePirate6 Well at first I didn't see a point with it but now I'm thinking it would be fun at parties. Get random drunk people to try it out + film them and show everyone how silly they looked when drunk.

In fact forget the guillotine.

@Saketume @SpacePirate6

But it has the potential to be so much more than that. See, the concept of the video is to showcase the fact that their product has the power to influence your state of mind while playing games; that it can convince your brain that when you're running and jumping across rooftops in Mirror's Edge that you really are diving down and rolling upon making contact to offset your body's impact. You can look down and see how frighteningly high up you are, hundreds of feet above street level. It's not exactly the VR we saw in cartoons, with a headset and a multidirectional treadmill to move around on, but the fact that it effectively plays these little tricks on your brain makes the games you play more immersive - if the game design lends itself to that sort of thing, anyway. I get the impression that a whole lot of people think this guillotine demo is actually an app or something that they're going to try and sell you. It is simply a tech demo to showcase the powerful and disorientating influence the Oculus Rift has to offer gamers looking for a little extra oomph to their game. I think it holds a lot of promise. Here's hoping for solid integration with solid games.

Oculus Rift could force a new degree of realism into shooters that use it.

Since in a Rift game, your field of view is separate from where your gun is pointing, devs would have to program bullets to come out of your gun, not out of your face :P

@Spartan_418 I just imagined bullets coming out of my face. The "PEW-PEW" sound effect made by your own mouth gets an entirely new meaning.

If you want an idea of how immersed you can get in something, search YouTube for the virtual haircut. Put on headset, close eyes and enjoy :)
