Destiny 2's Annoying Phalanx Enemies Have An Awesome New Weakness

Shoot them where it hurts.

One of Destiny 2's most common and annoying foes is an upgraded version of an old enemy: the Cabal Phalanx. These heavily armored brutes hold a gigantic shield in their off-hand, shooting at you with impunity from the other side. On top of that, in Destiny 2 they've gained the ability to massively increase the size of that shield, extending it on both sides to provide cover for their idiot Cabal friends.

Thankfully, there's something else new about Phalanxes in Destiny 2: their weakness.

No Caption Provided

In the original Destiny, defeating Phalanxes usually involved either chucking a grenade behind them, or shooting the tiny bit of arm visible sticking outside their shields. In Destiny 2, they've been granted a brand new weak spot, smack in the middle of those shields. Ping that glowing spot with a few shots and the shields retract, stunning the jerks in the process.

If you're new to Destiny this may seem obvious. But returning players might find it a surprise. After three years, it's pretty well ingrained in our brains not to waste ammo shooting the Cabal soldiers' impenetrable shields. And the big glowing spot isn't as clear a tell as you might think, given that the Taken versions of Phalanxes have a similar spot on their shields, which they use as a weapon.

Thankfully, Destiny 2 Phalanxes didn't gain that ability along with their new weakness. Put this one firmly in the "thanks Bungie" category, and happy Cabal hunting, Guardians.

I didn't know that. I've been jumping over them and meleeing them from behind. In the first game I'd shoot their foot which would bring down the shield enough to get a head shot in.

Ever notice how EVERY commercial for Destiny 2 does not show actual gameplay footage???? Hmmmm, wonder why that is?

Wow that's dumb. What's the in-universe explanation for this?
Cabal General: WHY IS THERE A BIG GLOWY SPOT THE ENEMY CAN SHOOT AND STUN OUR SOLDIERS?
Cabal Engineer: Because it's so stupid the enemy couldn't possibly think of shooting there.

Phalanxes have always been easy to kill. You shoot their gun arm that pointed over the shields. Now the shield is all but pointless for them. Not that is matters to me.

@spartanx169x: This was made very difficult by the grevious amount of aim assist in Destiny 1. Shooting their hand often left the bullets being pulled into the shield like some invisible magnet, you had to practically aim to miss in order to hit that hand.

That said, whilst it's nice that they've now got more of a weakness (like Vex Minotaurs having their weakpoint expanded)... it does seem really jarring to have such an obvious flaw in shield design from a military / war like race.

@Shadonic: I hear what you are saying, but at least for me and the guns I had it was rarely an issue. But I put a lot of effort into making precision shots. Playing Halo forced me to do that with constantly focusing on headshots. While headshots matter in most of not all shooters they are critical in Halo. Both on COD, Battlefield and Overwatch(I play them too) you can still get by without landing precision shots, but in Halo headshots are almost a necessity. So its cool. they just moved the precision spot to the centers vs to the side. Either way, THEY WILL DIE! Haha.

@spartanx169x: Precision shots don't matter in Destiny 1. You have auto aim for your gun and magnetic bullets. If someone stands behind something where the head is blocked off and legs too, and you shoot in the chest from afar, the bullet actually tries to hit the head, and you end up hitting the wall or whatever. In Destiny 1 it was annoying as hell to get precision shots when something was in cover, not to mention all those invisible walls near you if you found a nice spot to snipeshot enemies. Most of the times you were fighting against the aiming mechanics rather than enemies themselves, I got used to using a shotgun faceshotting an enemy until it's dead or use an exotic autorifle and void hunter, hit them with a super, throw your grenades, then unleash your autorifle on one enemy and everything dies.
