Destiny 2 Pre-orders Exceed Destiny 1's; Overwatch And Hearthstone Bring Blizzard A Big Quarter

Blizzard did well, even with no new game releases.

Activision Blizzard has reported its earnings for the second quarter of 2017, which ended on June 30, 2017. Although Activision saw a slight decline in monthly active users to 47 million, Blizzard was up to a record 46 million, a 38% increase over last year.

Blizzard attributed this to Overwatch and Hearthstone. Overwatch set a new record for monthly active users, which is impressive given that it's now a year old. The press release notes that the Uprising event, which included a PvE mode (the game is otherwise PvP only), enjoyed "record play time." Hearthstone also reached a new record for MAUs, thanks to the release of expansion Journey to Un'Goro. World of Warcraft subscriber figures were not shared, as per usual, but "time spent" in the game was up compared with the second quarter of last year. The most recent expansion, Legion, is also "perform[ing] ahead of the prior expansion," 2014's Warlords of Draenor.

Now Playing: 4 Things We Learned From Playing The Destiny 2 Beta

With the release of Destiny 2 approaching, Activision noted that the recent console beta attracted more players than Destiny 1's beta. Additionally, pre-orders for the sequel have eclipsed those of the first game, although no specific figures or further comparisons were offered. Call of Duty: WWII pre-orders are similarly described as "strong."

During the quarter, Activision made the uncommon move of releasing new content for a previous year's Call of Duty game with Black Ops III's Zombies Chronicles. As you'd expect, this led to an increase in players compared to the prior quarter (but apparently not the same period in 2016). Activision also noted that Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy performed well, becoming the top-selling console game in the world in June despite being available for only two days.

Overall, Activision Blizzard's net revenue for the quarter was $1.63 billion, a slight increase over the $1.57 billion generated during the same period last year. Perhaps more notably, $1.31 billion of that came in the form of digital net revenue, a 15% increase year-over-year.

The publisher will host a conference call with investors and analysts this afternoon. We'll report back with anything interesting it has to share.

@santinegrete: You'll hear conflicting opinions of course, but I personally loved it. Decided to preorder because of it.

Ive told so many ppl..

"Destiny 1 fans are pissed at Destiny 2" Doesn't matter

"Ppl aren't going to be fooled twice, this time they'll wait" No.. they wont..

"Destiny is dead" No.. it's not

"They extended the beta bc no one's playing it" Yes.. they are..

Gamers whine, gamers complain, gamers form petitions, but in the end most have no willpower. It's how games like CoD:IW can have more downvotes than any othe trailer, yet still outsold almost every game this year.

@inebriantia: as veteran of both beta's and the first game from launch......

Destiny failed, it took em what 2 years to get decent content??? and we foolishly paid over $100 just to get the real game and even then it had way too many issues....

base game: repetitive, boring schlock.......

Dark Below: the missions are okay I guess......

House Of Wolves: not too bad, the last mission was insane though

Taken King: stupid name but definitely what the story should have been like.....

Rise Of Iron: more what the story should have been like.....

the first beta: eww this is fun, hope the full game is epic as F cus I can see how this could be really cool......

Destiny 2 Beta: let's see how sucky this is......okay mission is good, story elements are intact and I never saw this part of the tower......damn man......the strike is kinda fun.....played the strike 5X and dealt the finishing blow 2X and kinda like how they did guns.....eww the farm seems kinda cool.....boring here but could be pretty lively when the game ships...

--------

I didn't pre-order Destiny 2 and I won't, I played the last few days of the beta and did enough that i could judge it on some level.....seems more the game it should have been but IDK, seems like they're going even more bleak if we're losing the last city.....when do we start taking things back???

you couldn't pay me enough to say Destiny 1 was great, it wasn't........they fracked up too much and that buy in for the good parts of the story stings.....so yeah but if this game can correct everything I welcome it but I'll wait for awhile before buying.......or IDK, maybe I'll find a used copy in the first week lolz

know what you call Destiny 2??? DESTINY'S CHILD *badum tss*

^arr walk the plank yee scurvy land lubber for dat bad joke yarr......

@darthrevenx: Yeah, I agree it had many issues, my comment was mainly aimed at all the ppl saying the game isnt going to sell well. I don't even like CoD, but I know it's always going to sell well. Gamers for the most part, well ppl in general really, like to say one thing, while doing the opposite. So it's kindve fun when things are pulled out into the open.

Warframe players like to complain about the price of re released content, flood the reddit, then it turns up most of them buy it lol. I just like stuff like that I guess.

Damn these publishers are making a killing off us gamers, I can only hope that those developers who are working overtime and cant even see their families get a big chunk of that money, but most likely most of that money is going to investors who dont even care about gaming.
