Destiny 2 Beta Has Been "Amazingly Helpful," Bungie Says

Bungie talks about the initial feedback to the beta.

The Destiny 2 beta is going on right now for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It wraps up on July 23, and now Bungie has discussed the purpose and importance of the testing period. In Bungie's latest weekly blog post, producer Jared Berbach said the beta has already been "amazingly helpful" for the development team.

"The analogy I always give is that the beta is the plow on the front of the train that blasts all the snow off the tracks to clear our path," Berbach explained. "We had many updates to the original, but Destiny 2 is a brand-new game using brand new technology in order to deliver an awesome experience. This new technology needs a lot of testing."

Berbach added: "This testing ultimately helps us validate that our new server model is working as we thought it would, and at the quality and scale we had hoped. It helps us evaluate our new tech advancements, including enhancements you'll understand more fully when you play the full game. Ultimately, it paves the way for us to have a much smoother launch."

Also in the blog post, beta design lead Rob Engeln said another major purpose of the Destiny 2 beta is to, of course, gather feedback about gameplay and balance. He clarified that the version of Destiny 2 that this beta is based on is actually "months old," so the feedback players send in is more about validating choices that were already made.

One example of this is the scarcity of ammo, particularly power ammo, in PvE.

"In addition to retuning the drop rates, we built a system that guarantees power ammo drops for you and your Fireteam from certain enemies, giving power weapons a more reliable and predictable role in your arsenal," Engeln said. "Other areas where we've made significant tuning changes include grenade effectiveness in PvE, Boss vitality, and weapon damage against non-player combatants."

Since the Destiny 2 beta is still going on, Bungie isn't ready just yet to talk about the "full suite of statistics," but it sounds like those details will come later.

"This grand experiment is ongoing, and we're tracking every data-point and forum thread," Bungie said.

The Destiny 2 beta opens to everyone on PS4 and Xbox One on July 21. For everyone, the beta wraps up on July 23, so play now while you still can!

Mixed reviews on the BETA, myself. I enjoyed the first mission everything feels different from the first destiny; which is good in my book. However, the matchmaking for PvP is quite terrible. I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt right now. Maybe they don't have the players to balance teams well, but when the other team has 4.0, 5.0, and 6.0 as their kdr's and the best someone managed to get on your team was 1.0 it really not a very fun experience (and I did the "low intensity" Quickplay). One thing I really don't like about PvP is that they reduced team sizes to 4 players, I really like the chaos of 6v6 teams on the first destiny.

I also wanted to add a tidbit about the guns. They're fun to use and I like the new addition of the sub-machine gun. However, having 2 categories of guns that are essentially the same only one uses kinetic damage while the other uses elemental damage is a waste of a category. Especially when the heavy or power category that's called now has all of the more unique weapons in it. I really liked how D1 had their weapon system where you got a primary (auto, pulse, HC, or scout), special (sniper, shotty, or fusion), and Heavy (swords, machine-guns, and launchers); there was more of a variety of weapons you got to use with this system. It seems like you're wasting a weapon category just to add elemental damage to the guns in the primary slot.

Tried out the campaign mission today. Feels like the first one, but the visuals have received a boost (likely as there is no PS3 & 360 versions this time to port down to), with better textures, lighting and reflections. I went from not really being that interested in picking up Destiny 2 to seriously considering it now. However I feel like they should give players of the first game (and all it's additional DLC) some way to find their old Guardian's corpse or something even just to loot the gear since unlike other MMO's our character doesn't carry over to the new game.

The double edged sword that Bungie is playing with, pretending that this "BETA" is anything more than a stress test teaser, is conveying the wrong message to long time fans. Making people doubt the quality of your product, to give you a chance to say "WE FIXED EVERYTHING YOU GUYS COMPLAINED ABOUT, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR INPUT, SEE YOU AT LAUNCH!!!" is currently in backfire stage.

They should have been more truthful with their audience, told them that it was a limited access stress test, and that if they want more INSIDE INFORMATION first-hand, to download the stress test build, and see for yourself, what youtubers have been privy to for the last 3 months.

Seriously, Luke can be funny when what he say is scripted by someone that is funny, but when he tries to make a joke, he fails miserably. He should not be allowed to talk, PERIOD.

This beta is just incredible. It's polished, looks outstanding, plays great, and makes me SO excited for September. Bungie is making all the right moves with this sequel so far.

the BETA is Amazing. The game is running smoothly and we can see that it will be a much bigger game. Already finish the strike 4 times and I just can't wait to play the full game. 4 vs 4 is also a nice evolution from the first game, matchs are fast, intense and really fun. Keep the good work, see you September 6th !

Not a significant change from D1 but still enjoyable. Of course they have made some changes (so they say) to multiplayer strike teams and so forth but still very familiar to D1. I already pre-ordered the game and will be spending hours playing it in the future.

It isn't a beta it is a game demo. As a demo it was alright but nothing special. Got the general gist of the story etc, not much seems to have changed overall. Intrigued by the ending, we going to have perma death now? I doubt it. Looks nice, plays OK, just more Destiny which is fine. I like Destiny. But a stretch to call this a beta with next to no content. Don't know why they bothered to be honest.

@Fallenlords69: My problem with this as a demo is that it doesn't do much show how things have changed or improved outside of the new gun arrangement and Control mode changes.

@TrueLink: I don't think probably that much has changed overall. Destiny wasn't so much broken, just lacking elements. Main ones being the narrative was all a bit screwed up and all over the place. Not much of a reason to play once you hit level cap. This sort of stuff is all suppose be different this time around. So I think we are just getting Destiny 2 - more of the same fundamental stuff but with more focus on story. And hopefully less of a grind and more variety.

There isn't many games like destiny. If you destroy Destiny, you might destroy the genre and developers won't make games like destiny and it would be only games like call of duty overwatch and battlefield. Destiny is a shared world. If you like sharing your games with other people in an AAA first person shooter experience than destiny is great.

You say it like it's a bad thing.

And there's plenty of MMOs out there, fps or not.

Now they just need to fix the weapon system and the movement physics and they're good to go.

Did they just high-five themselves as a marketing tactic? Aka, "don't pat yourselves on the back TOO hard, since we can't help but notice you haven't said what your returning player counts are..."

@Pyrosa: You'll know how well they are doing by the language they use with their stats. If they start quoting hours played rather than number of players, you know things aren't going as well as hoped. Or if they start saying how many accounts have been made like with the first game rather than actual concurrent players. I recall people saying they were including beta tester accounts and such in their number of players. Basically anyone who created an account to beta test the game or try the game for 10 minutes at a friends was counted as part of the number of active players when I'd bet a good 30% of them were no longer active.

@Pyrosa: Oh, I'm sure they'll tell us all about how many millions of players they've got in the first week or so of the game launching.
