Dead Space haunting the Wii

EA's postearnings conference call reveals Nintendo edition of survival horror shooter; new Battlefield: Bad Company, multiplatform Mass Effect 2, Dante's Inferno in early 2010.

As part of its third-quarter earnings report today, EA revealed a grim holiday performance and a number of disappointments for gamers who were looking forward to earlier-year releases. PC games The Sims 3 and Dragon Age: Origins as well as the multiplatform Godfather II, all once slated for release before March 31, have been moved to the publisher's next fiscal year, which runs from April 1, 2009 to March 31, 2010.

Dead Space, now with more motion controls.
Dead Space, now with more motion controls.

Helping to ameliorate those delays during its postearnings conference call, EA revealed a number of surprises that will join these three games during the publisher's upcoming fiscal year. After emphasizing that EA must make a bigger push to capitalize on the Wii's success, EA CEO John Riccitiello said that a number of its core games will make the transition to Nintendo's best-selling platform, among them last year's survival horror hit Dead Space.

"We're bringing core intellectual properties to the franchise in categories we think have legs on the Wii platform," said Riccitiello. "A good example of this is Dead Space. We're bringing a Wii title to market this year and it is absolutely going to be the quality and fear factor that you got on the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC SKU this past year."

However, that wasn't the only game announcement that Riccitiello slipped. The executive also said that the publisher's fiscal 2010 fourth quarter, which runs from January 1, 2010 through March 31 of that year, will see the release of a follow-up to EA DICE's well-rated Battlefield: Bad Company. Riccitiello also confirmed that BioWare is prepping Mass Effect 2 for a multiplatform release during the publisher's Q4 window, though he did not indicate whether the game would extend beyond the Xbox 360 and PC. EA Redwood Shores' Dante's Inferno is also expected to arrive during the January-March 2010 quarter.

Riccitiello also narrowed the release window for a number of previously announced games. Fight Night 4, now in development at EA Canada after the closure of EA Chicago, is expected to ship during the April-June quarter. During the publisher's July-September quarter, EA expects to launch Need for Speed: Shift for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PSP, and PC, with Need for Speed: Nitro on the Wii and DS expected to follow in the October-December window.

One franchise that will not see a return next year is Medal of Honor. Unfortunately, Riccitiello did not expound on future plans for the long-running series.

here we go. now to all wii fanboys don't take this the wrong way because i own a wii and have enjoyed a few games on it, but when these developers begin to realize that they need not to create such a sophisticated piece of software for the ps3 or 360 then they will turn away from those platforms and put there time n' $$$ into the wii. this is not good because the wii isn't much more advanced than the GC (except for motion controls) so we will begin to see software advances start to slow. now i understand that EA is just one developer, and microsoft and sony have a few decent developers under there wings, but for those who are multi-platform why waste so much time and $$$ on two consoles when you could all but make the same amount of profit from releasing on the wii which is at a 50 million install base. luckily, if i had to guess, many of the wii owners aren't into or won't be able to purchase "M" themed games like Deadspace, but on more user friendly titles that isn't the case.

The only reason they're porting anything is because of that massive financial loss they just had that they reported. Otherwise they'd still be giving Nintendo the finger.

Probably it will look a lot like RE4 on Wii (which is not a bad thing at all) but still, there is a bast difference between the 360/PS3 and the Wii. But if they manage to pull it off, they'll have a way to earn the revenue they deserve.

Hopefully we'll see a Mirror's Edge sequel. Also, I really doubt Dead Space Wii Edition is going to be good.

smart move for ea. i'm surprised not more 3rd party developers has done the same. the wii may not be a graphics powerhouse but it takes less money and less time to develop for the wii and 45 million households already own it.

Hmmm... with the financial problems EA is having, I can't believe they're taking a risk on porting this kind of game to the Wii. Graphics aside, I'm just not sure there's an audience for it. Kinda surprises me that EA is being the one to give it a shot. Still, EA HAS done some pretty interesting stuff so far with the Wii's controls. Madden is fun with waggle, but also falls into the category of "you seriously don't expect me to play like this more than a half hour at a time" like most Wii games that dare go beyond "shake the controller".

Wow, this game, let alone any real horror game(new house of the dead excluded), just doesn't belong on the wii. Resident Evil will work since the shooting will be better than the other consoles, but it's going to be VERY hard to capture Dead Space's atmosphere without making a shallow game. If this does well though I will be impressed with EA and the wii.

Arclight_Blue Posted Feb 4, 2009 10:59 am GMT Hey EA, while you guys are at it why not make a Mirrors Edge wii version with Wiimote nunchuck and Balance Board controls. That would totally rock! imagine how many times you would get motion sickness that would own!

the RES engine works for the wii and seeing as this game already played like the latter it wont make much of a difference which is a good thing but im guessing this is going to be a straight port!

TheDecoy2124 - it will make or break on the controls. If they get these right, it could be superior to the other versions (except in the eyes of the graphics junkies).

I love this on the 360, and I rented it on my PS3 I freakin loved it so much. Now I finally have a reason to use my Wii again. But since I've had it on 360 and PS3, I cautiously optimistic on how it will turn out.

Ooh, that will be superb for Wii owners. I've gone through the 360 version about 4 times now, and it was definitely my GotY. If they can get the controls down like they did with Resident Evil 4, then everyone will be lovin' it!

I think this next 12 months will see a huge rush of developers realising they were wrong to shun the Wii - sales figures can't be ignored. It should mean a vastly improved and extended games library over the 12-24 months hopefully.

"they'll have to tone down the graphics for the Wii" - probably, but I, for one, couldn't care less. Take RE4 and give it super great, "updated" graphics in some other console, I would still prefer to play the Wii version

I wish I could make a Necromorph Mii.... That'd be awesome, and it attacks the mii in the mii parade. Anyway, cool, that Dead Space is hitting the Wii. It is a brilliant game, so i hope it will play even better on the Wii, and that the lack of graphics wont affect the atmosphere. Finally a use for tilting your wiimote in a gangsta style lol, especially with the Plasma cutter. To Deano: No sh!t sherlock.

Medal of Honor Allied Assault was my first WW2 first person shooter that I ever played....loved it. But I can understand why they would rest the franchise. For a while there was an over saturation of such shooters in the market. However, I'm thrilled that there's going to be a Bad Company sequel. Under rated when it comes to mentioning the best FPS multiplayer experiences.

I doubt Wii would be able to handle such a high detail demanding game like dead space. I mean RE4 is just PS2 graphic at best and Wii can definitely handle it. But Dead Space...?Can they really pull it off? Maybe it would just become another rail-shooter? I don't know.

Well Dead Space should work out great on the Wii. I felt the controls had a very Resident Evil 4 feel to them, and I thought the Wii version of RE4 was the best due to the controls. Things like aiming and knife attacks just worked better so if EA sticks to the same formula we should all have a winner.

Eww. I personally disagree with this. The only people who would buy it are most likely hardcore gamers who have left it sitting there since getting tired of SSBB (very hard to do IMO). Little kids who play the Wii to marvel at the fact that they can bowl without getting it in the gutter probably won't buy this game. They'll probably be too busy going wow at world of goo or those toy car games. I'd like too see how the controls on this game work though.
