Daniel Craig Says His Bond Is "Not as Sexist and Misogynistic" As Previous Ones

Plus, Craig says there is a "great sadness" to the 007 character.

Actor Daniel Craig says in a new interview that his version of the iconic super-spy James Bond is "not as sexist and misogynistic" as previous incarnations of the character. Craig's comment came as part of a wide-ranging and expletive-laced interview with Esquire, in which he talked about how he sees Bond.

"He's very f**king lonely," Craig said. "There's a great sadness. He's f**king these beautiful women but then they leave and it's… sad. And as a man gets older, it's not a good look."

No Caption Provided

Times have changed. And Craig--the sixth man to play 007 over the years--says he hopes that his Bond will be remembered as one that is less sexist and misogynistic.

"Hopefully my Bond is not as sexist and misogynistic as [earlier incarnations]," he said. "The world has changed. I am certainly not that person. But he is, and so what does that mean? It means you cast great actresses and make the parts as good as you can for the women in the movies."

The next 007 movie is Spectre, which arrives in theaters this November. It's the follow-up to 2012's box office smash, Skyfall.

Esquire's interview with Craig is a great read, well worth any Bond fan's time. Check it out here.

I beg to differ. I'll cite the "Bond girl" in Skyfall as the perfect example.

People look far to much into bond. Modern culture seems to be against him. He's meant to be a somewhat relic of the past

Still jealous of Peirce Brosnan because he was a better and more liked Bond, and had a legendary movie/video game combination that puts him as a Bond legend.

"He's very f**king lonely," Craig said. "There's a great sadness. He's f**king these beautiful women but then they leave and it's… sad."

Actually, thinking about it now, I think Craig's Bond has only left one woman in the three films he's done. Everyone else he's had sex with has died.

Mrs. Dimitrios? Dead in a hammock. Vesper? Drowned herself. Strawberry Fields? Killed and covered in oil. The gal from the casino in Skyfall? Shot in the head. Olga Kurylenko's character had the right plan not sleeping with bond. The only girl he's actually left (alive) was whoever he'd shacked up with on the beach during his "time off" after being shot by Moneypenny.

I always imagine the directors of Hollywood films saying this:

“Sure we keep putting sexy-looking people dressed sexily together in sexy situations, but we just can't figure out why people always wanted to see them have sex. We just give people what they want.”

Also, “misogynistic”? I see that word thrown around a lot these days. I'm not sure if anyone knows what it means.

“Misogynist - (n.) a person who hates or doesn't trust women.”

He trusts almost every woman he comes across, even when they're obviously evil. Sometimes I wonder if there's anything Bond likes besides women.

This is why I love this site, when Kimmel talks shit about watching videogames so many people on here were agreeing with him and anybody who didn't agree was called a whiner or told to basically "shut up nerd", but when somebody calls James Bond sexist or misogynist then those same people start saying "No you're wrong, you don't know what you're talking about." and defending this fictional character. Oh man, all of this happening on a GAMING site is such a beautiful chaotic mess of hypocritical nonsense. I love you Gamespot, never change.

I don't see how Bond was sexist or misogynist. Bond was macho, sure, but Bond was classy. Bond was what a man would look at and say, "Damn, that's what a man can be!" but it was nothing against women. Bond was a womanizer and that's something many men are in real life. You could argue that women have never really had a role here but James Bond is about James Bond. The focus is on him and Bond doesn't share a spotlight with anybody else.

Not trying to be what Bond hardly was is a step in the wrong direction.

Not gonna lie, some of the older Bond movies have been pretty sleazy. Not recently though. Not since Pierce Brosnan.

But seriously though, Bond the character has never, EVER been misogynistic, and if you think he is you need to learn the meaning of the word. He has never hated women. He loves women. He especially loves having sex with them. He might be sexist (thinking he is superior to women), but never, NEVER misogynistic. And shame on Daniel Craig for laughably saying so.

And that's part of the reason why Craig's Bond is such a goddamn bore. He doesn't have the same smartass charm that previous Bond's had.

Casino Royale and Skyfall were excellent movies, but the character of Bond himself?

Connery is still the undisputed Grand Master

@frank_castle: Be fair, man. Craig didn't say his Bond was the best, he said his Bond was the least sexist and misogynistic. And then you bring up Sean "Hitting a Woman Isn't Bad" Connery, whose Bond was probably the most sexist by today's standards.

I'm not saying his Bond was worse (or better) but the point Daniel Craig made still stands.

@tom2750: What a strange argument. It's like if Daniel Craig said his Bond kicks less cantaloupes than the other Bonds and then you argue that kicking cantaloupes isn't wrong. Whether or not kicking cantaloupes is wrong, he was still right that his Bond kicked less of them.

I'm not saying his Bond is worse (or better) but the point Daniel Craig made still stands.

@frank_castle: Agree 100%. My favorite bonds are Connery, Bronsan, Lazenby, Moore, Dalton, Craig., in that order. I miss the over the top James Bond. Womanizing, brawler who could beat up ten guys, jump around on several vehicles blowing up each one, and then walk into a casino without a wrinkle in his tuxedo.

The bond I grew up watching was not some Emo, 12 step program, politically correct, soul agonizing, 5' 10", blonde actor who literally acts his whole way through the film instead of just being bond.

Craig is a fine enjoyable actor but it is like watching Jack Black casted as Sherlock Holmes.

Yeah, pretty much.

Hell, Dalton essentially played the same serious Bond that Craig does, but to a higher degree IMO.

@frank_castle: Timothy Dalton, had everything going for him, in being James Bond. The movies were decently well scripted- and produced. But the main problem with Dalton was he was soooooo boring, I know he wanted to take Bond back to the embattled hardened spy who is ready for it all to end, but he also showed little screen presence - he is great as a 'traditional' character actor. But James Bond is a character actor or traditional.

I am not even sure if a traditional Ian Fleming novel of Bond would translate well to screen, but the James Bond (like a modern day super hero was like going to summer action superhero movie today). Plus when you introduce and james bond since the 60's one way, it is hard to see him as a polar oposite. Even then Dalton just didn't bring any energy to bond.

Sorry so much bond, Don't get me started on bond girls I could literally chat for days on bond girls alone.

LOL but in all his movies he is saving a "damsel" isn't that sexist? surely that's implying that woman can't save themselves? thats bad no?, not to mention he swaps lovers like he swaps boxers=womanizer. Lets not be stupid now James Bonds character is based old school Masculinity that's is very specific and very sexist (which is good) .James is super spy supreme man whore or uses bullets to solve all his problems

I mean c'mon The bond girls are pretty much eye candy and trophies for Mr Bond

@musalala: Today's feminist girlfriend is always just some female that thinks an unmarried man should behave like a husband, pay for everything, not enjoy his free time, be held accountable for all the life altering executive decisions she makes for him, and certainly not enjoy the company of other women.

Bond is not married, and as far as I can tell there isn't really any implied commitment in his relationships. Swapping lovers does not make him a womanizer.

Whatever he is doing it's working, at least for me. I always couldn't stand the old Bonds, they were just too ridiculous and corny. This article also cut out others parts of the interview that put it more in context (saw it on another site, where among other things they were interviewing another person about whether or not Idris Elba should be the next Bond). And I must say, ever since he took over I noticed how there isn't really a "Bond girl" written in just to show up periodically for sex and sex appeal, and when there is she seems to be killed off or have more of a story to go with her. I'm surprised to see how many people in the comments are mad about this. The times have changed and so have the movies. He portrays this Bond as older, somewhat broken down a bit. He's never been the suave Bond, and at least I like that decision.
