D3 goes downloadable on PSP

Puzzle Quest, Dead Head Fred, WTF, and more set for sale over PlayStation Store for PC between $10 and $15.

Sony's Universal Media Disc format hasn't taken off as a format of choice for movies on the go, and the PlayStation Portable-exclusive format is becoming increasingly optional for games on the go as well. The latest evidence of that came this week as D3Publisher announced its plans to release a selection of its PSP catalog for download over the PlayStation Store later this month.

In North America, D3 is breaking the titles up between two price points. For $14.99 apiece, PSP gamers will be able to download the company's breakthrough hit Puzzle Quest Challenge of the Warlords, the comic-horror actioner Dead Head Fred, and PQ2: Practical Intelligence Quotient 2. At the $9.99 point, gamers can download older or less prominent titles like the puzzler Cube, minigame collection WTF: Work Time Fun, and the original PQ: Practical Intelligence Quotient.

European gamers will receive a slightly different selection of titles. D3 will be offering Puzzle Quest, Cube, Dead Head Fred, and Practical IQ (the European edition of PQ2), but gone are the original PQ and WTF. In their place, Old World gamers will get the Arkanoid-style Beta Bloc and the self-explanatory Super Pocket Tennis. Release dates and price points for the European games were not announced, but they are expected to be available beginning this month.

Release dates for the North American games are as follows:

September 18
Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords
Cube

October 2
WTF: Work Time Fun
PQ: Practical Intelligence Quotient

October 16
PQ2: Practical Intelligence Quotient 2
Dead Head Fred

Too bad I sold my Psp, I sold it when there was a huge game drought that lasted about 2 years, but then quite a few games came out that I wanted to get including some that are going to be coming out, so maybe I might pick up the "psp 300" or w/e the name was.

i think once sony sees downloadable games is the future--and this will help the psp and ps3 sale more systems--if they would offer more games more mainstream ones they will see this is the future---i would like to see 20 to 30 bucks a month to download and play unlimited games a month-----like rhapsody and napster does music--this would be sweet

Here's to hoping they offer Puzzle Quest as a PS3 downloadable as well... it's available everywhere else, after all.

Thanks for the info, Peng. Next time I try to buy something, I'll see if I can just add the appropriate funds to whatever I have in my wallet. The site's a little clunky, which is probably why I ended-up spending more money than I wanted to.

On PSN -"The Last Guy" is a souped up version of a WTF minigame. I do like the downloadable games but they need to be cheaper, I think they wanted $22.99 for Parappa which is ludicrous! Sony, get the price down on these and we'll buy more!!!

buzzguy...yes, there is a way to spend exact money on a game. When you add the game to your cart, and go to purchase it, if you do not have enough money in your wallet, it'll prompt you to add funds. If you do so, it'll add exactly the amount needed to cover the DLC plus the tax, so you should never have extra money sitting in your wallet if you don't want it. My first few downloads, I had the same problem you did, but I figured to do it this way instead. Jeanne d' Arc-good choice, btw. Waiting for the one copy at my work to drop to closeout so I can pick it up for about $15 or so. :)

My question is whether the downloadable version of PQ will have the same glitches as the UMD version. I experienced my game freezing on on me and quests disappearing on a few occassions, making it impossible to advance in the game. I don't really like downloadable games because I can't sell them later, but if there's one game I consider to be infinitely replayable, it's Puzzle Quest.

Hmm, I guess you could pay attention to how much money you are putting into the wallet. Otherwise, it works exactly the same as buying points on the 360 or Wii *shrug*

I love the PS online store, but the way payments work is wack. I have $4 left-over from when I bought Jeanne d'arc a little while ago. What am I gonna do with $4? Is there a way to get that money back. Otherwise this whole "wallet" practice is akin to highway robbery.

great way to bash the poor PSP in a good news GameSpot. A cool report about a bash of new downloadble games (new to download, i know that those low profile gmes aren't new) at a great price point somehow was converted in a "UMD sucks, even PSP says that" report... good job.

Puzzle Quest was a great game...never, ever, would have thought you could mix something like tetris with a RPG much less make that mix any good.
