Crytek's CryEngine 3 to support PlayStation 4

Crysis developer to "empower" engine licensees "to achieve their own ambitions on the console."

Crytek, the creator of the Crysis series, has confirmed that its CryEngine 3 graphics engine will support Sony's PlayStation 4 console.

CryEngine 3 on the PS4 = more pretty-looking shooters oncoming for the system.
CryEngine 3 on the PS4 = more pretty-looking shooters oncoming for the system.

According to a post on Crytek's official site, the engine is already used by PlayStation 4 developers. The studio said that it will "empower [engine licensees] to achieve their own ambitions on the console."

Crytek's director of global business development Carl Jones said that "by supporting developers as they build for the future on PlayStation 4, we are cementing our position at the forefront of the industry and helping others to create the best games they can in this exciting period of transition."

Last month, Crytek announced that CryEngine 3 would support Microsoft's Xbox One.

Panzar: Forged by Chaos for the PC uses Cry 3 Engine, and it is a beauty.
With the strength of a PS4, I'll be waiting for the Cry 4 engine. Haha.

Normally I'd say this would be pretty great news but I'm not that naïve to think that the X-1 won't be getting the same chance to use this engine either...

Good engine but second best out there. Call of Dutys next gen engine is epic and blows anything else out of the water.

More the merrier, just gives developers more tools to make good games. Will not complain.

Homefront 2 will dethrone all top-tier shooters when it arrives! These so-called "AAA"-quality titles include Call of Duty and Battlefield, i.e. milked and rushed rehashes.

No shock here. Crytek would be a complete joke if they didn't. They've talked about this as an engine that can work on pc and consoles. They'd be clowns if it didn't actually work on consoles despite that being their aim.

@jsmoke03 I've always wondered this as well. CryEngine is way better than Unreal Engine IMO, i just wonder why we never see it on any games. Then again, Unreal Engine 4 could have better graphics than CryEngine 3. We will just have to wait it out and see.

@bfmv2007 @jsmoke03 Download the free developer kits for both engines and you'd know why. Unreal looks simpler which is great for a small time games company that doesn't want to waste time learning a complicated software and spend more time with art and gameplay. You also don't need to instal plugins for maya/max or photoshop to export your models or textures. You just use standard obj/fbx files or standard png files. It is also flexible enough for a developers needs. Also cryengine 3 games on PC aren't really very optimised for lower end pcs which is what most smaller developers need to target since no one really spec up their PCs for something like dear esther. But of course, with all that said and done, Cryengine 3 does have better graphics out of the box on current gen consoles and would really scale up well on higher end PCs or next gen consoles.

@bfmv2007 @jsmoke03 Relatively sure UE4 is easier to use/more accessible. Is the Cryengine free to license too?

@Jonno621 My main problem with Crysis is that the games look fantastic but it makes no difference since the games are the dullest spectacle that I've ever had the misfortune to buy. Literally no substance at all and the games get great ratings simply because they look good.

@M3o5nster @Jonno621 True but you don't make a game like Crysis on a Fisherprice gaming engine. That engine was created by Crytek for the job of pushing the limits of graphics.

Feels a bit like buying a Ferrari. Yes you can buy a Ferrari, (the Crytek Engine), and it will do anything you want it to performance wise, but when trying to park in a tight space like in most European cities, where the streets can't fit a jumbo jet easily inside them like in the States, there are better cars for the job.

@Dannystaples14 @Jonno621 that has more to do with the developer than the engine.

actually that's great news and nothing else, the Cryengine has some of th best ambient lighting and shadows, really good texture rendering, and some of the best draw distance in the gaming world. i still see that Unreal Engine 4 gets all mushy the further you see things, something the CryEngine still handles better.

I can actually see developers who wish to create vast, lush world use this engine with great effect. anything from very colorful RPG's to the brownest and brony FPS's, i've seen the mod community take the Cryengine from the SDK alone and create simulators with it, RTS games. so i have a good feeling that the gaming world can use this engine really well and especially with the jump in tech in the next gen, this can only mean good things.

@wizzzer_thy_133 Its an engine.. Its not like it just makes the graphics itself. Instead of saying cryengine has the best textures shadows and lighting.. I would say that it SUPPORTS some of the best textures shadows and lighting. Its not like any game that uses cryengine 3 automatically has the best graphics. Its a foundation for the developers to do with it as they please.. For example crysis3 devlopers use the cryengine3 in a way which really makes it shine.. But than you have games like sniper ghost warrior2, warframe, and state of decay which all use cryengine3 and some of them actually look pretty bland. The textures in sniper ghost warrior 2 on some surfaces are completely untextured, some items don't cast shadows, and some of the lighting is lackluster compared to crysis3. So yeah cryengine 3 supports the best graphics but doesnt just give good graphics to everything it just so happens to touch
