Crytek Says It's Getting Increasingly Difficult to Wow People With Graphics

Crysis and Ryse: Son of Rome developer Crytek is known for some of the best looking games in the industry, which it creates with its proprietary CryEngine. The first Far Cry and Crysis in particular were ahead of the technological curve when they came out. However, the developer says that it's not as easy to impress players with beautiful graphics as it used to be.

"As opposed to the times of the original Crysis, we as an industry have reached a quality level now where it is getting increasingly more difficult to really wow people," Crytek’s principal rendering engineer Nicolas Schulz told DSOGaming in an interview. "That said, there’s still enough areas to explore and we will definitely keep pushing the boundaries as much as possible."

Schulz also discussed the limitations of high-end PC graphics processing units (GPUs) and the current generation of consoles. On PC, he said, the current generation of high-end GPUs is still far from being able to reach 60 frames-per-second at 4K resolution, which is four times the amount of pixels that need to be shaded compared to 1080p.

"This is very quickly saturating the available bandwidth," Schulz said. "The consoles are clearly behind high-spec GPUs in terms of raw horsepower, however on the positive side, they share the same modern architecture which enables a wealth of interesting optimization techniques."

Ryse: Son of Rome comes out for PC on October 10. Crytek recently announced that it has stripped the Xbox One's microtransactions out of the PC version of the game. If you want to know if you can run Ryse: Son of Rome, check out the PC system requirements.

Dear Crytek, I would like to give a feedback about Crysis 2 and 3 so listen carefully.

When I played Crysis 2 way back in 2011, I was really amazed by the dramatic changes in gameplay mechanics compared to Crysis 1/Warhead and how epic its storyline was which is worth following and breaking down in minute details even despite of its lackluster visual fidelity. I am willing to pay for it including its supplementary DLCs even for a high price. I have considered Crysis 2 as a "Near Perfect" PC Game with exception to its Linear Game Progression Scheme and Closed-World Game Levels/Maps. However in Crysis 3, it became apparently worse compared to Crysis 2. The setting of the storyline and the plot of the storyline is lackluster and does not even have the "WOW" Factor in the Rising Action and Climax Portion of the story. The Nanosuit Customization Feature has a limited flexibility[that's because of the limited choices because of the scarce nanosuit upgrade points as opposed to the Nanocatalyst that are being extracted from dead Ceph Units which also serve as a currency to purchase Upgrade Modules]. Although the graphical fidelity of Crysis 3 is excellent and it truly showcases the realism of DirectX11 to make the gameplay experience more immersive[at the expense of higher GPU Demands of course]. Crysis 3 should have a complete remake of the storyline and revision of some gameplay aspects like the Nanocatalyst Currency for Upgrade Modules should be also carried over from Crysis 2, Unified Ammunition Refill/Reloading Mechanic[Standard and Special Ammunition Crates should be unified] for existing bullet-type weapons like Typhoon, M2014 Gauss, Scar Mod 2, Jackal to name a few[except grenades/grenade launchers and arrows]. With these revisions, Crysis 3 will truly become an epic FPS Game and will sell like hotcakes.

There needs to be a company focused on graphics at all times in my opinion. Just like there should be a company focused on realistic sound, good physics, good gameplay. Obviously gameplay is very important and can be hindered if the criteria for what makes a good game isn't met. Video game companies compete with each other so we need to see them focus on what they do best if we want to see more variation and an overall better experience in our games.

Everyone knows Crytek's games are some sort of softwares for GPU benchmarks. I did enjoy Ryse though, And Crysis. And Crysis 2.

Hey Crytech, I have an insanely new idea for you guys. How about...I know you're not going to want to hear this...how about you try to wow people, for once in your games, with the...gameplay!?!?! I know, this is probably asking for too much from you guys, but thought I'd throw it out there.

Keep doing what you are doing Crytek. By the comments below, these folks have no clue you develop game engines to license out and make money. Ryse is very impressive graphically but neither console is going to be able to perform at the level where you can wow them (High-End PC), and you have already maxed consoles at their inception. Maybe it is time to look at Epic and build a scalable engine from mobile to high-end and wait one more GPU cycle for 4k. I still prefer to have shiny new graphics with my stories and gameplay.

lol maybe that's because you still haven't released anything graphically better than the original Crysis.

Just a tip, you'll not achieve great quality on consoles ;)

Jesus christ just gtfo, such a broken record with you tools.

NO GRAPHICS WAH MORE GAMEPLAY.

Stop transferring your overall whininess towards the entire industry onto one company who has ALWAYS only cared about graphics. It's absolutely pathetic. Crytek was busting out amazing graphics and game technology before most of your treasured game companies even signed articles of incorporation.

Are you all 5 year olds affected with alzheimer's? Honestly, I'm asking.

Comments like these really annoys me. Putting all that focus on graphics, when they should put it on gameplay and story is just so fracking stupid. The graphics in games now are so good that, mostly, even the worst looking games have nice enough graphics. Stop this "wowing" with graphics crap. Real gamers don't care.

My laptop in 2011 that I paid £700 for was running with 8GB of RAM

2 Years on, the next gen consoles are released and have 8GB of RAM much to my surprise, to last for what, 10 years? I assume thats a big joke on us?

I have a 4GB nvidia graphics card and 32 GB of RAM in my PC and nothing can touch it on the game market. Because most AAA game devs are focusing on consoles and ports.

The spec of the next gen consoles will soon be actually holding back games

I really think PC gaming will make a massive come back in a couple of years because devs will be under so much pressure to provide bigger open world and more demanding games with more 'realistic' graphics. The next gen consoles simply do not have the power to do it over the next 10 years.

Damn, devs making games for xbone are still having trouble getting them to run in 1080p at 60 frames. I think many devs will consider go back to PC for the scope and less hassle and wasting thier time. Time is money and this ultimately is business. £1000 today will buy you a powerful rig. £500 approx gets you a ps4 and a couple of games (on release price) at a quater of the power availiable. Do the maths.

Plus if games like Destiny are the 'future' of console gaming in depth, longevity and creativness, um... well... I think I will stick to playing fun indie games on the PC. Sad but true :P

<< LINK REMOVED >> Aren't they already under pressure to make all of those things and yet they still develop games that work on consoles?

People have always been into graphics and massive realistic worlds and yet consoles are still here and still selling into the hundred millions every generation.

Not to mention PC has always been here and always been mega powerful and a good number of developers don't bother with it at all or they just port their game over and not to mention none of the games on PC are super powerful, with mega impressive AI. The only benefit PC games get over console is they are prettier. If PC games had insane physics calculations and were putting the NASA space simulators through their paces with how advanced the world simulation in PC games were I'd understand but all they do is make the games look nice.

As Destiny and any Crytek game over the last 8 years has proved, nice graphics don't make a game good.

The last gen consoles were on par more a less with good gaming rigs of the day. Today the gap on release is far bigger.

I agree there are lots of crappy game that look great (Destiny),

I disagree with one point, that The only benefit PC games get over console is they are prettier.

No, they can be modded for totally different game modes and longevity, are often more intricate, deeper, allow Indie devs to make great games

Any PC gamer will tell you how much deeper they can be.

But as I mention, the PC market is suffering crappy games these days because games Devs are generally making games that are ported to consoles.

It's been the case for some time. I remember several years ago the same point being made. The return in time spent for minor improvements is not always justified. The content of the game, the gameplay counts more for immersion than graphic quality. I look at a lot of the comparison videos and I'll be honest. I see very little difference, certainly not enough to justify the idea that one machine is better than another, especially if playing a good game.

First off, Realistic physics and destruction > photorealistic graphics
Secondly, Yes it is getting harder to WOW people with graphics so maybe now is a good time for crytek to learn how to make games that are actually fun to play and not jst pretty to look at

i think this looks tip top on any system, i enjoyed crysis, number two was maybe more of the same, non the less great to play. Crysis one on pc was visually gorgeous and the game was unique in itself too. i hope crytek continue to provide us with more of the one of a kind future game setting stuff they always have, leave the sequels though guys.

The game looks good but I'm not paying for techdemos and this one is basically a boring and linear QTE simulator and not really a interesting game I'd want to play.

Sorry Crytek but you need to get your things together and return to the Crysis 1 days where you had impressive technology AND a good game with very good support for mods, plus the editor was usable offline without that CryDev account "phone home" DRM nonsense that can't be used offline.

Needless to say that Crysis 1 and the Warhead addon were my last Crytek game purchases and they seem to remain the last ones for quite some time.

As far as I'm concerned graphics don't necessarily need to get any better and I'd rather like to see improvements in AI, sound, animation, physics, gameplay and all that good stuff that actually matters.

From the gameplay videos I've seen it looks pretty cool but my backlog is already way too big and I don't "need" this game urgently, so I'll wait and get the complete pack in a year and perhaps even cheaper too then.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I wouldn't necessarily call it the best game of this generation (www youtube com/watch?v=6AV9W2ZdmjU) but I'm still going to buy it for some braindead combat action.

If you ignore the fact that the combat system is extremely simple it's still a good game though - not the best but certainly playable and combat and the animations are pleasing to watch as you effortlessly decimate hundreds of enemies.

Just a shame that there is no difficulty option for actually challenging combat like in Overgrowth for example where timing and player skill matters.

I really hope that one of the DLC or addons / patches improves that part of the game, so by the time I'm going to buy it, it's less "casual" in higher combat difficulty settings (which will hopefully be added).

Lol kinda a funny statement from a developer that recycled NPC's in their Ryse game.

Like most would agree, it's not just about graphics. Graphics is like a hot chick, it doesn't mean much if the rest of the game has no personality. Look at Gears of War. That game looked amazing when it launched. But what made it really shine was the impressive gameplay. The graphics was the bonus, a compliment to the gameplay and not window dressing.

Don't "wow" me with graphics, wow me with gameplay. If I wanted a tech demo, I would've wasted my money on an expensive gaming rig that could play the latest games at 4k resolution, 60+ fps on Ultra High.

But if you can do both (Witcher 3 is looking to do that) then that's even better...
