Crytek Says It's Getting Increasingly Difficult to Wow People With Graphics

Crysis and Ryse: Son of Rome developer Crytek is known for some of the best looking games in the industry, which it creates with its proprietary CryEngine. The first Far Cry and Crysis in particular were ahead of the technological curve when they came out. However, the developer says that it's not as easy to impress players with beautiful graphics as it used to be.

"As opposed to the times of the original Crysis, we as an industry have reached a quality level now where it is getting increasingly more difficult to really wow people," Crytek’s principal rendering engineer Nicolas Schulz told DSOGaming in an interview. "That said, there’s still enough areas to explore and we will definitely keep pushing the boundaries as much as possible."

Schulz also discussed the limitations of high-end PC graphics processing units (GPUs) and the current generation of consoles. On PC, he said, the current generation of high-end GPUs is still far from being able to reach 60 frames-per-second at 4K resolution, which is four times the amount of pixels that need to be shaded compared to 1080p.

"This is very quickly saturating the available bandwidth," Schulz said. "The consoles are clearly behind high-spec GPUs in terms of raw horsepower, however on the positive side, they share the same modern architecture which enables a wealth of interesting optimization techniques."

Ryse: Son of Rome comes out for PC on October 10. Crytek recently announced that it has stripped the Xbox One's microtransactions out of the PC version of the game. If you want to know if you can run Ryse: Son of Rome, check out the PC system requirements.

PS4 will have the most money thrown at it, and therefore the best graphics. Unfortunately Microsoft doesn't have enough studios to make their console look good at this point. And PC has even less as in none.

No. It's not getting harder to wow people with great graphics.

Quite the contrary. In fact, many games get people interest in the first place, exactly because of how good they look. Destiny for instance. The Witcher 3. And so on.

But graphics alone don;t make a game good.

That is the problem. People get wowed by the graphics and then they get the game, start playing it and somehow, for some reason, the fun is not there.

That's the problem.

Game designers need to realize that much like movies, you can't simply use great special effects and think your game will do great.
The first Matrix was technological leap for movies. It spawned sequels to it, but people still prefer the first one to the last Matrix.Same goes for some of the Star Wars movies.

There are plenty of movies that people loved because of how great they looked. Like "The 5th Element". Or "The Guardians Of The Galaxy". Or "The Avengers". They are all movies that depend a lot on the "wow" factor. But they also offer great entertainment.
Same goes for games.

People are getting more demanding not because people are no longer "wowed" by graphics, but because people know that it's possible to do more.

There is more competition.

The best example is people reaction to AC Rogue vs AC Unity.

AC Rogue may be a great game. It may even have a great story.

But people are way more interested in Unity.

Why? The wow factor of the graphics.

I think people are more interested in Unity, not just because of the graphics, but because Rogue just seems to be basically black flag but with snow

From day one I've been a console gamer and I can easily say that console graphics have never been on par with PC graphics and probably never will be. That doesn't make the game any less enjoyable to play on a console though.

@blackfrancis usually the draw distance and lighting or shadowing is better, with exceptions such as bf3 with 60 frames on the pc compared to the console versions. The pc is superior but at more cost, hopefully now consoles are using similar "pc" architecture well see some closer comparisons. I agree with you though, i enjoyed bf3 more on the ps3 more so than the pc.

I enjoy good graphics but many of the best games ever made, have horrible graphics(by todays standard). I just replayed MGS3 subsistance on ps2(because the HD version cut out snake's dream), and I found those "horrible graphics", to be amazing.

If I read one more person say "graphics doesn't mean anything, it's gameplay and story that counts" on an article about graphics I will go insane! I've read that phrase so many times it is like a parrot learned to type and created thousands of accounts and is now spamming the one phrase it knows over and over.

It goes without saying that gameplay and/or story are more important, so just keep it to yourselves because there is nothing wrong with wanting games to look good as well.

I've been gaming for over 25 years and still revisit old games, so I can appreciate that gameplay trumps graphics. However I still want to see graphics evolve.

@leimonides Anyone who says this clearly doesn't know much about games nor have they played any.

Graphics haven't improved almost at all over the course of the entire past generation of consoles. Those few games that pushed the limits, and the graphics companies and microsoft and AMD themselves are what pushed graphics. 4A Games, Crytek, DirectX, Nvidia, ATI, Epic Games, id software - these are what pushed graphics and the games that made them happen.

For every BTS, Ryse, Metro, Crysis, Far Cry, or Battlefield out there, you have 150 CoDs, 150 Resident Evils, and every other game that did absolutely nothing technologically new over the years.

So, no, incorrect.

I don't even think Crytek visuals are that great. Yeah, lots of depth of field, lush greens, all the bells and whistles... but I think the reason people like the visuals so much is because of these tacky little effects. In my opinion, Crysis and Ryse just look over-saturated and over-processed. The actual models and environmental detailing isn't impressive.

But whatever. I guess I can understand the appeal to Michael Bay-esque over-the-top flashy cinematics, but it's definitely not my cup of tea.

@oldtobie Wrong sorry please try again.

Anyone who played Ryse can attest, it's f****ng amazing graphically and that was on the "crappy" xb1.

The armor textures, the skin textures - as close to photorealistic as you'll get. With proper lighting effects. Environments, water, foliage, it all looks fantastic and again, as close to lifelike as it gets thus far.

In your opinion. Your shallow and gullible opinion. Graphical quality is always subjective, so there's no way that I can be wrong.

The game looks like a cartoon with the shading and texturing style they used. Absolutely nothing like real life. Go outside, kid.

Oh look, fanboy is back for more. Give objective examples if you want to attach that tacky 'fact' thing to your comments. Your comment is so opinionated that it's a joke that you'd even consider using it.

It's not a fact. It's your incredibly unpopular opinion that has no validity. I can't believe how much of a textbook fanboy you are.

Well the writing should be on the wall in massive highlighted and bold letters, it's not graphics that does WOW people anymore, it's good gameplay... the kind of gameplay that made games interesting back in the day... bloody hell.

@Johny_47 You mean like spamming B? or A? Or X? Or Left?

You kids need to stop making wild accusations as if the people who gamed back then aren't still here to immediately prove you wrong.

Metal Slug - spam 1 button all the time with some movement and grenades mixed in.

Gradius - spam one button all the time with some movement and specials mixed in

Tetris - spam one button all the time to rotate and drop pieces with a second button

Every RPG - one button, always

The list goes on like this.

So, no.

On this article's comments everyone says gameplay is most important, but the next time a PS4 game has a higher resolution than an X1 game everyone will be freaking out again.

According to KANBAN -- what once was a "wow" becomes norm over time. It might be hard to wow us with graphics, but it has become very easy to disappoint us either. So try to satisfy us and you'll be fine

GAmeplay and story will always be more important than graphics any day. Just remember that graphics are only used to enhance the gameplay and story to begin with.

By the way, While I noticed some slight environmental details and lighting improvements with pc, the XBOX1 looked just fine for me, I cannot wait to see what games will look like on this system in it 3rd year after dev kits and tool sets have aged.

@jenovaschilld This is a funny comment coming from someone named Jenova's child. FF7, a game whose gameplay was not only underwhelming and downright contrite, but it was only heralded for it's "advancements" in 3D graphics when in fact 2 dimensional games with hand drawn art like Chrono Trigger or older FF games which came out at the same time or before it, including 3D Chrono Cross which came out not long after, both looked and played significantly better.

<< LINK REMOVED >> You are reading waaaaaayy to much into a name, I was just tickled that any name resembling FF7 was even available in 97', - I mean I was actually tickled - I laughed like a little girl.

I will admit my first FF was 7 and just like your first little girlfriend who lets you touch her boobies, FF7 will always hold a special place in my heart despite any flaws. And as for ff7 flaws - well Square (back then) was a chance taker with talent to spare and letting them stretch their legs with bold choices was not a bad thing. While the story might not have been willliam shakesperean, at least they gave it their best william shatner-ean effort.
