Critics Of WandaVision Are Missing The Point

WandaVision, the first Disney+ MCU show, is a breath of fresh air after a decade of Thanos-centric storytelling in the movies.

When 2020 passed without a single Marvel Cinematic Universe release, fans were anxious for the next piece of the massive puzzle, after being accustomed to getting new servings regularly. However, the releases of Black Widow and Eternals on the big screen were delayed, while Disney+'s Falcon and the Winter Soldier was pushed after production was halted during the pandemic. Finally, though, there was a light at the end of the tunnel. WandaVision became the first MCU Phase 4 entry and, it should be argued, it's also one of the strongest projects Marvel Studios has released yet. What's more, it's doing that on TV through Disney+, a first for the franchise.

Not only did WandaVision end the drought of MCU entries, but it's helping to redefine what a live-action Marvel story can be. On one hand, WandaVision is a celebration of TV history, with different episodes paying tribute to different eras of family sitcoms--from 1950s shows like I Love Lucy to early-'00s favorites like Malcolm in the Middle. Each episode has painstakingly recreated the shows it's inspired by, from the ridiculously silly special effects of old sitcoms to the fourth-wall-breaking moments of later eras, in which characters speak directly to the camera--not to mention a new era-appropriate theme song each week.

Now Playing: Scarlet Witch's Comic Book History Explained | WandaVision

Beyond that, though, WandaVision is a story of loss, trauma, and coping with post-traumatic stress disorder. That's surprising given the characters of Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) have more or less been third-tier players in the MCU. Now, they're thrust to the forefront and given the kind of character development most of the MCU roster could benefit greatly from, telling a genuinely heartbreaking story.

No Caption Provided

Which is why it's so surprising to find criticism of the show that calls it a Marvel movie stretched into nine episodes of television, or a series lacking a central villain that gives it the kind of depth people have come to expect from the MCU. Complaints like this are missing the point of WandaVision completely.

Make no mistake about it, while the show fits into the larger picture of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and there is likely a "greater power" behind so much of the terror that's unfolding (we see you, Mephisto), searching for a "big bad" on which to blame the events of the show is a waste of time, because it's already been introduced. The trauma Wanda has experienced is the villain of this story.

This is a woman who was experimented on, watched her twin brother murdered in front of her, found herself responsible for an untold number of accidental deaths that led to the Sokovia Accords, then chose to kill the only being she loved to save the universe, only for Thanos to rewind time and kill him even more brutally in front of her, rendering what she did pointless.

No Caption Provided

Throughout each episode of WandaVision, this character is brought face-to-face with everything that haunts her, from the reappearance of her dead brother to seeing her beloved Vision as he was in death, to seeing this picture-perfect reality she's conjured being ripped apart at the seams. What's worse, this is all presented as torment she's bringing upon herself, creating victims of not only the actual people of Westview but whatever's left of Vision in the process.

It would be difficult to tell a story of this magnitude comprehensively in a single movie, if only because there's so much to unpack. And now it's being doled out in episodic doses every week, leaving viewers to sit with each installment for days, theorizing, discussing, and digging deeper while the anticipation builds for the next installment.

That might not be ideal for those trained to expect their MCU stories in larger chunks or even people accustomed to Netflix's full-season releases of shows. However, there is not a one-size-fits-all approach to entertainment. Different types of stories are told differently and releasing all of WandaVision at one time would not only be far less exciting, it would be a disservice to the individual episodes.

No Caption Provided

WandaVision is appointment TV. Every Friday (or Thursday night, depending on how late you stay up), the next chapter of the story unfolds. Sure, it would be great if the episodes weren't dropping at midnight on the west coast, but having a new episode of the series to look forward to watching--and look forward to talking about--each week also keeps the MCU alive while movie theaters remain closed.

Beyond that, though, these episodic releases show WandaVision is in no way simply a Marvel movie's worth of story stretched to take up an entire TV show. Having a season of TV allows for much more exploration of the characters and plot than you'd get in a single film. It makes for a richer experience, and it sets the tone for what's to come in the MCU.

After all, following Endgame, in which the Avengers finally bested Thanos, saved the universe, and saw at least two core characters take their final bow, the future of the MCU is going to be different. There are new characters and teams on the way, the expansion of the universe through TV shows on Disney+, and years of new stories to tell. Kicking it all off is a show that has managed to spotlight underutilized characters, bring back seldom-seen fan-favorites like Darcy (Kat Dennings) and Agent Woo (Randall Park), set up future films like the next Captain Marvel and Doctor Strange movies, and also adapt tried and true TV formulas, some of which are over half a century old, making them feel new and fresh again.

No Caption Provided

After nearly a year of movie theaters being closed and so any blockbusters being delayed, getting a weekly dose of the MCU is a reason to celebrate. More than that, however, getting a weekly jolt to the system like WandaVision, a show that manages to expand the Marvel universe while focusing in on two characters, is a gift that should be hard to complain about.

Sure, the author isn’t *technically* wrong about the two specific criticisms he uses in the article—but no one’s really arguing that the show format is worse than a film format or that the lack of a central villain makes the show worse off. The reason the show isn’t very good is that it fails to capitalize on both the show format and lack of a central villain. There isn’t enough unique character development; many of the episodes feel like diversions (dinner party, magic show, Wanda’s day at home) with nothing to keep them moving forward until the stingers at the end; and the format isn’t avant-garde or written wittily enough to distract us from a lack of plotting (unlike the extremely excellent, bizarre Legion). The show had the potential to be very very good, but it feels half-baked and watered down so as not to lose young or old audiences.

I agree with this article. This show has been slow burning as far as revealing anything goes. The whole point has been to give us an idea of what Wanda's done to the town and reveal through little bits that something is wrong making the viewer guess what's happening. That's how I took it, and it paid off for me.

Well, here's one from the "Cheers & Jeers" section of TV Guide (Feb. 15-28, 2021):

"JEERS to WandaVision for distracting us with too many Easter eggs. We get that Disney+'s Marvel series expects viewers to know Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany's supercouple from the Avengers movies, but understanding all the little nods to characters from Thor, Ant-Man, Captain America and Captain Marvel, not to mention obscure comic book plots, is far from a snap."

Wandavision Reviewers Are Missing The Point. As a fan of Marvel series, I think reviewers are missing the point. The TV retro scenes of the early episodes may be a homage to those who watched those series; for many fans watching Wandavision including myself found the first few episodes super boring. Yeah, great, those TV episodes are old and strange; not entertaining. I would go as far as saying ep 1 and 2 were the most boring of the series so far. Shows from the 70/80s/90s were not that much better either. All the cast and crew I'm sure had a great time trying to replicate every detail from those old shows...great...but it did not serve to entertain those who were looking for a Marvel TV show. Same could be said for reviewers who can gloat and enjoy the good old times on how Wandavision reminded them of the "old" shows. When I watch Marvel TV/movies, I'm not looking to watch a drama; I'm looking for action/super heroes mixed in with a good story which happens to border on a drama. All that being said, the show has been better lately and with the twist might be more interesting. But without a doubt, this show has been very slow to get things rolling and I hate having to waiting weekly to get a tiny morsel of story to get further into the Marvel timeline. Expect more "Marvel"ness from Falcon and the Winter Soldier!

I for one think WandaVision is an amazing, well written show that fits perfectly in the MCU and is totally unique in the way they do things. I predict Dr. Strange appears in the last episode as well just as I knew the voice on the radio was the FBI guy from the AntMan movie before it was revealed.

My first two thoughts are that I found Mr. Hayner's article interesting because I had no idea as to what the WandaVision series was all about. Also, the video as to Wanda's history is also interesting. However, they only reinforced my original decision not to watch the series. Frankly, I rely on Sci-Fi, Superhero, and Horror genre productions as a means of entertainment, and yes, escape. I'm not surprised that Disney decided to produce a series, that is basically "PG" from the "House of family friendly productions". As an older adult, who has had to deal with serious issues in my own life, and seen a lot of people struggle with issues in their lives. I avoid entertainment productions that focus on those kinds of things. I think the one thing that kind of bothers me about productions based on Comic book characters. Is that in order to continue to make money, and I guess to please fans. Studios and production companies will continue to "reimagine" and "recreate" character origins and plots. I think the DC theme is an example. No principle characters ever die. If they do, a way is found to resurrect them. I prefer productions that reflect the real world. Bad things happen, people die, and good and truth don't always prevail. I understand that people want different things in their entertainment. It isn't my purpose here to criticize anyone for the entertainment that they choose. I just wanted to add my voice to the conversation as an older person, and someone of a different demographic from the majority of the people posting opinions here. Thank you.

it's a great series, and ties into the comics and the fragile psyche that Wanda has. it's very well done and you can tell they used the comics as reference. this only strengthens the character of wanda/scarlet witch and I cannot wait to see where it goes.

I don't care much for the MCU but I like Wandavision for what it is: A very well written show with an interesting premise and very good actors. I wasn't familiar with Paul Bettany before this (haven't watched any Avenger movies) but I absolutely love him as Vision. Elizabeth Olsen is also superb.

I gave this show 15 minutes but there is a line between satirizing or paying homage to '50s sitcoms and just making another one, which is what Wandavision felt like. Call me short attention span, but I hated '50s sitcoms before and have no desire to watch one now. I don't come to bury Wandavision, if people like it that's great for them. But to write an article saying don't criticize it is ridiculous, people love to argue about TV shows.

@lokar82: Just so you know, each episode is a different decade in US TV history, so it doesn’t stay in the 1950s longer than the first episode. I’m not trying to convince you to like something you don’t, but just letting you know that the decade you didn’t like doesn’t last very long and that you only have 15 min left of it.

Wandavision has been extremely entertaining so far, but all of the questions it has raised mean that a lot will depend on how those questions are answered in the last few episodes. I do think it's kind of funny that Gamespot felt this editorial was necessary given the fact that the show has grown from as low 35 in the rankings to the number 1 show across all platforms by episode 5. Clearly the show is extremely popular and not in need of defense. The internet is, as always, disproportionately full of haters.

"Complaints like this are missing the point of WandaVision completely."

That's kind of a bullshit, "it's silly to complain that it's bad when they designed it to be bad"-argument. Delving deeper into the characters of Wanda and Vision is fine and the series format per se is fine (there's plenty of examples of series and miniseries that tell solid tales and provide great character development) -- but none of that is an excuse for the flimsy, thematic, flavor-of-the-week format that only serves to detract/dilute attention. It ends up looking like padding because the people involved couldn't figure out what to do with the time they were allotted.

The whole thing is like announcing a superficial, mobile-only sequel to a vastly popular game series, and then go all surprised Pikachu when it's met by overwhelmingly negative feedback.

@wepeel: ”overwhelmingly negative feedback” and the show is rated 8.2 on IMDB with the last three episodes all above 9.0. I think you need to take a look into the dictionary on the word “overwhelmingly”. Or “negative”?

I like the show, but it's pretty pathetic to see someone write an article that's basically, "You don't like what I like so you must not get it". That's sad. Maybe they don't like it for other reasons, maybe it's a little slow, maybe it seems like it's repeating itself, maybe the sitcom gag has been worn a little thin. Just enjoy what you enjoy and don't worry about everyone else, generation outrage.

There is no such thing as "missing the point" in regards to the opinion of other people. Some people won't like the show. The subtle nuances you seem to love, others may not care for. You want to write a love letter to WandaVision? Fine. But articles like this are why this site has the low journalistic reputation that it does. It's like if TMZ covered video games 5% of the time.

Telling anyone who doesn't like the show it is because they just dont understand it is dbag101.

@JSusie: it is a little bit dbag but it is also a little bit right. Those that are expecting an epic battle against a big bad are indeed missing "the point" of WandaVision that it is to examine the price Wanda paid and the trauma she has to contend with, not fight another bad guy.

I just can’t handle the TV show segments. A few minutes is fine, but they drag on and don’t add anything to the story.

I gave up after 3 episodes because Of them until a friend told me that the 4th took us away from that concept which was fine....but ep 6 was another chore to watch. Mostly.

I didn't like Wandavision at first. I mean, I knew what the premise was (Wanda stuck in her own little world where Vision is alive, and they pay homage to old sitcomes), but the thing with this was that I found only the first episode to be truly funny. If the fourth episode hadn't been what it was, I probably would have not watched it further.

I haven't seen, but I'll give it a shot. It has 93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Usually, I like Marvel stuff when it's funny, like the first Guardians and Ragnarok. It's not, in mind, meant to be taken very seriously. It's not Ingmar Bergman.
