Cooking Mama serves up 500,000

Majesco ships more than half a million units of its quirky cooking simulation for the DS in 11 months.

It's no secret that the past couple of years have not been good for Majesco. After suffering the fallout of several retail bombs in 2005, the publisher spent the latter part of 2005 and most of 2006 in triage mode, canceling projects and selling off game licenses in an effort to shift away from top-tier, big-budget development.

With its sights now set on casual and handheld games, specifically for Nintendo's monstrously popular Nintendo DS and Wii, Majesco seems to have turned a corner, to the point of prompting some industry analysts to upgrade their stock advisement to "Buy" and projecting a return to profitability for the once-thought dead-in-the-water publisher.

Majesco's turnaround in fortunes was further evidenced today, as the New Jersey-based publisher announced it has shipped more than 500,000 units of its chef-in-training simulation Cooking Mama for the Nintendo DS. The milestone comes 11 months after Mama first opened for business last September. Hoping to surpass this success, the publisher announced Cooking Mama 2 last week.

Developed by Office Create, Cooking Mama features more than 75 different dishes that players can slave away in the kitchen creating. Players must serve up high-quality dishes, lest they incur the wrath of the ever-watchful Mama. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

If GameSpot wasn't so AntiNintendo, the game would have been given certainly an higher score.. Many magazines gave CM a grade btw 7-8 . The stupid 6.9 and 5.5 gave to the two games by Gamespot will not surely helps the next game selling...

CM is a great game just for fun. It features mainly Japanese receipes but that works for me. I got some very good ideas for dishes and how to make some dishes right (I love to cook Asian style.) Not every game has to be fast-paced and exciting. Sometimes you just want something for breaks, for fun... You can easily end it anytime because you will not miss something.

u can't compare cooking and driving :D driving is about physical interaction cooking is NOT really about how u hold or stir the pans, it's about the amount of ingredients, timing etc so once u can master some recipe, it'll become much easier to apply IRL :) play that game on ur lunchbreak and surprise ur mother on her birthday :D or make ur spouse pleasantly surprised

Good on Majesco! Cooking Mama never really lived up to the full potential of the idea, but it uses the DS controls incredibly well, and it's appealing to the new audience the Ninendo systems are bringing in, so it deserves to do well. Right game for the times. And as for it not teaching skills applicable to real cooking - do you *really* expect to learn cooking from a game console? I don't expect to learn to drive a car from a racing game, or how to start a business from tycoon games. Come to think of it, I don't really think all those brain training games have made me smarter either. :-)

Man, I wonder how they sold. Maybe in a bundle. The last couple of years hasn't been good for them because of games like BlowOut.

I just had an idea. How about someone develop a REALISTIC cooking game for the Wii and DS. The storyline is that you are the head chef of a small dingy restaurant and have to cook basic dishes to increase your popularity. As you become more popular, you progress onto posher restaurants and more complex dishes. As a break from cooking you get to shop for ingredients, search for suppliers and keep the place up to hygiene standards. All done with the Wii remote and stylus. Also in the game you actually learn recipes and techniques that you can utilise in real life. I'd buy a cooking game like that.

@Unholy_Smite - Even as woefully inarticulate as you are, you do possess a point. Considering Cooking Mama was a 6.9 on the DS, a lot of the people who bought it were likely dissapointed. Will they jump all over Cooking Mama 2 or Cooking Mama Cookoff (which got a 5.5!)? One-hit wonders are abound in the music industry: are we set to see the same thing happen more often in gaming?

It took more than 11 months (and a Gamestop pricecut or two) to reach 500,000? Took long much? New Super Mario Bros., a game which appeals to both casual and hardcore, sold that much in a month. Gamespot never cut the price of Cooking Mama. It launched at 20 bucks. Anyway, of course New Super Mario Bros. is going to sell more. Mario is a very popular title. But as Cooking Mama is a more lesser known niche title, half a million copies sold is really good.

That's great news. I've bought Cooking Mama for the NDS, and I believe it's not as bad as people use to say; I like this game, actually. It's true the game doesn't teach you how to cook, but it's still a nice game to pick up and play, and the touch controls feel just great. Besides, the game price is inviting. Anyways, I wish Majesco the best, for they are supporting NDS and Wii systems. I hope things will get even better when Nanostray 2 is released. Can't wait to get this awesome game!

There's a shocking turn of events. Positive news is once again met with an onslaught of elitist attitude. Because how DARE a game outside the standard demographics sell reasonably well? Or even particularly well, considering the target was non-gamers. Damn Majesco oughta go out of business. After all, Gears of War (a game for a different system, of a different genre, for a different audience, with a load of promotion and huge budgets) sold WAY better. ^ Sounds kind of dumb, right? Well, so does this: "Wow, to think it took 11 months to sell 1/6 of what Gears of War sold in two weeks! Move over, real games!"

If you don't buy the games you can't moan about them, I have cooking mama on the Wii, it's not my cup of tea, but I bought it and have made my conclusions on actually playing the game, not reading about it and following the crowd!!

Real cooking is more fun and rewarding than this game, and while your waiting for things to bake, you canplay real video games.

Better than what most games sell, but when you put in to perspective how much the DS sells, 500,000 isn't really that impressive. Especially when you compare it to sales of something like New Super Mario Bros. or Mario Kart DS.

This is one of those games where you have to be the right person to play it... I can't see why anybody would play this game... You make food and get no real reward... but in real life, I make food and then... I can EAT IT!!!!

In all fairness, Cooking Mama is not what the mainstream gamer looks for in a game. For one thing this game lacks guns and gore. However, it's an original title and is appealing to new gamers, and those who want a refreshing experience. And amazingly, it still sits inside the UK Top 10 All Formats chart!

The game wasn't the best thing ever, but it did grow on me. Good on Nintendo for continuing to expand the idea of gaming to include things that most people think are boring. The DS and Wii are a breeding ground for this kind of thing.
