Codemasters' customer data compromised

British developer latest gaming firm to admit loss of players' personal info; names, addresses, phone numbers, and gamertags all compromised.

In recent weeks Nintendo and Eidos Montreal have joined Sony in the ranks of those games firms who have had security problems, and now British developer Codemasters has joined the club. The firm today confirmed that it detected an "intrusion" last Friday, June 3, and had since determined that user data had been compromised.

Snow isn't the only hazard awaiting Dirt 3's players.
Snow isn't the only hazard awaiting Dirt 3's players.

According to Codemasters, the compromised data belonged to users of the publisher's corporate website, the Dirt 3 VIP code redemption page, and the Codemasters eStore. Personal data including names, addresses, dates of birth, gamertags, and encrypted passwords were all accessed, according to the developer.

This is the second problem to best the Dirt 3 VIP codes, the firm's first attempt to battle the used-game market by bundling single-use codes to unlock certain features with new copies of the game. PlayStation 3 owners had previously not been able to redeem their codes because the PSN store was down and thus they could not gain the in-game benefits associated with it.

Codemasters apologised for the incident, saying it was "the latest victim in on-going targeted attacks against numerous game companies." The developer also said it was "doing everything within our legal means to track down the perpetrators and take action to the full extent of the law."

Hackers Go for the Gusto!! This anti-piracy is a joke. They are just preventing pre-owned games from being sold. If I buy a game and sell it for less why can't people just use it. hackers please beat there walls down.. you worried about sales more than security of the people purchasing it go screw. I know I don't like it all but I understand when the industry pulls this kind of crap. Just be innovative I would never buy a pirated awesome game. Maybe there are other losers out there that would but I stand for my morals and they can go screw. but I got no problem with pirating a crappy shovelware game, LOL!!

Maybe 2012 was predicted wrong. Maybe by 2012 all video games and consoles will die out by mistakes/hacking and loss's, and we will all be forced to go outside and play, but the lack of grip on reality will inevitably get us owned by cars or lack of life bars!

@Evilnator Only three hackers from the group Anonymous were caught. This recent string o hacking is being done by a different group called lulzsec. This specific hack has no one taking credit yet.

I Have a good idea. Why don't ALL the hackers get together and hack terrorist web sites. Then they would all become heros instead of a large festering pimple on the worlds anis.Or maybe they just like the view from down there.

zni3h, yes it is because they are idiots. They should hire smarter people to protect us, their "Valued Customers". You don't have to be smart to hack, you can learn that on the internet. Within 1 hour or so you too could be a hacker. If you can hack a game, you can hack a web site with a little persaverence. The Secret Service will probably investigate this, as they do with all credit card fraud, not the FBI, believe it or not.

Just putting such a aggresive (multiplayer and cars locked down) VIP code for Dirt 3 was an imbecile decision, ok, but messing with my personal information again... a big **** *** to those companies. They now give hackers are reason to exist, and a reason for me to buy a new pc, and easily download my games somewhere.

They did a crappy job on Operation Flashpoint, If they can't design a game without MAJOR flaws right out of the gate, what makes you think they can run a secure web site, the IDIOTS.

@jqh97116 right so let me get this straight ... you just think they've gone to all the trouble and enormous risk of hacking major organisations for a laugh rather than the benefit of stealing peoples details to lead to bank accounts with money in them? ... I've read some naieve comments about these hackers before but thats the most optomistic of the lot. You dont go to that kind of risk just to freak out the population.

You know,I start to wonder,do things like this happen all the time and we just never hear it because like with the Nintendo one it was no big deal?Maybe we just hear about them so much now because thanks to the one that was actually a problem-the PSN debacle-it's a hot news item that gets people reading articles.Or are these a bunch of lame hackers just trying to get a feeling of accomplishment by committing copycat crimes? People are stupid.

What is going on these days? Has stolen data always been an issue and we only see it in the headlines now because of the Sony incident, or is this something new?

Will the hackers say they are doing this because Codemasters deserved it for not releasing a MicroMachines game recently or "just because". It's concerning that this is becoming something of a fad akin to that stupid planking crap.

Activating the game was a step forward to steal the right of playing what you pay for. If hackers do because of this, Well done. The man must be free, to do what he wants with what he bought, and should not become slaves of servers.

What do you hacker supporters have to say now? Why do you support these losers? They're not "standing up" for the people, they don't care about anyone but themselves. They steal from anyone, they could care less if you support them or not. They are thieves. I can't find one simple reason what they're doing is "standing up" for us. I don't support criminals, sorry.

This is getting out of hand. I hope Microsoft is paying attention to all this and really beefing up their security, as well as any other company. I think the FBI needs to step in and take these dirtbags down no matter if it's the same hackers or different hackers all together.

Fortunately, I use tiered passwords and give fake details as a rule. The only case one should EVER give their real info is to a financial institution such as your bank where required by law. My recommendation is to create a fake identity and use that across any services you use, if that gets compromised then no biggie; and to use different passwords for each site, or AT LEAST for the important ones :\

@UntraceableHaze What I don't understand, is why don't the hackers go after Bioware? I'm getting really sick of these companies attempts to minimize used game sales... This is just 1 example of why DRM and codes don't work very well. Sucks for the people that bought Dirt 3 :'(
