Cliff Bleszinski Says He Made LawBreakers Too "Woke," And That's One Of The Reasons It Failed

"White dude shoehorns diversity in his game and then smells his own smug farts in interview."

Cliff Bleszinski struck gold with the Gears of War franchise, but his first game after leaving developer Epic--the team-based shooter LawBreakers--was not a success. That game, and developer Boss Key's battle royale follow-up Radical heights, failed to find an audience. And in turn, Boss Key closed its doors and Bleszinski left the gaming world.

Bleszinski is now taking time to reflect. He said in post on Instagram that lately he's been thinking about what he could have done differently with Boss Key. Easy ideas might have been to "pivot hard" when Blizzard's own team-based shooter, Overwatch, was announced, or he could have been "more of a dictator" with his ideas for LawBreakers, he remarked.

Now Playing: LawBreakers Video Review

But perhaps a bigger revelation for Bleszinski was that he regrets getting political. He said he wishes he let LawBreakers speak for itself instead of being the "white dude [who] shoehorns diversity in his game and then smells his own smug farts in interview."

You can read Bleszinski's full statement below:

"Ever since the studio closed I've been wracking my brain what I could have done differently. Pivot HARD when the juggernaut of Overwatch was announced. Been less nice with my design ideas and more of a dictator with them.

One big epiphany I had was that I pushed my own personal political beliefs in a world that was increasingly divided.

Instead of the story being 'this game looks neat' it became 'this is the game with the 'woke bro' trying to push his hackey politics on us with gender neutral bathrooms.' Instead of 'these characters seem fun' it was 'this is the studio with the CEO who refuses to make his female characters sexier.' Instead of 'who am I going to choose' it became 'white dude shoehorns diversity in his game and then smells his own smug farts in interviews' instead of just letting the product ... speak for itself.

It's okay to be political when your company or studio is established for great product FIRST. But we were unproven and I regret doing it. (This will be quite the doozy of a chapter in the upcoming memoir.)"

As Bleszinski mentions here, he is currently writing a memoir that will chronicle his life and experiences in the video game industry.

Bleszinski left Epic after 20 years in October 2012, prior to the release of Epic's massively popular battle royale game Fortnite. He started Boss Key with former Killzone boss Arjan Brussee in 2014; the team shipped LawBreakers in 2017 and the early access PC game Radical Heights in 2018 before closing down later that year.

Bleszinski is now pursuing one of his other passions: theatre. He is an investor in the critically acclaimed Broadway musical Hadestown, which he is also co-producing. Hadestown earned a whopping 14 Tony award nominations, winning eight--including Best Musical.

It's shocking that he actually admits that going woke caused him to go broke. Normally they blame everything else under the sun but their agenda.

Problem is, this was not even top 5 in the issues with this game so he still hasn't learned.

He thinks it failed because it didn't have female characters show their breasts more? Am I reading that right?

As someone who never played Law Breakers, were there other instances of political correctness in the game? I sincerely doubt the "PC-ness" of the game led to its failure.

Based on the market research I have done white male conservatives are the largest gaming base in the US making up about 40% of the players. Female white conservatives are the second largest base taking up around 25% of the total demographic. If conservatives see left leaning politics in video games they are three times less likely to buy them. They also go into review bombing frenzies across the web for anything they believe violated their ideological beliefs. The remaining 35% have left leaning politics but they purchase games at about 1/3 the rate of their right leaning counterparts.

@Zonned87: The conservative crowd doesn't review bomb, but they will outright refuse to participate by boycotting. I don't want to say the liberals review bomb, it's mostly morons, but the two are so similar it's hard to distinguish anyway.

No lawbreakers was a fun game it failed because they didnt listen to the Pc audience. They refused to give us a server browser and used console match making thats why it died. There are games right now with only 1 or 2 thousand players but you can find a full 32 or 16 player matches because you can search and join not spend 45 min in que thats why lawbreakers are dead. I can find full games offical and private servers of much smaller games but i can jump into a almost full game with server browser no one wants to wait forever in crap console style match making. Right now i can find a game in 25 year old games because of server browser i dont have to wait around to get a game in match making keep that console match making crap for Halo leave it out of pc gaming.

What a lame excuse. I would play a game made solely by bi-sexual, meta polar bears, that were vegan, and they would not vote for Buttigieg because he was a conservative oppressive 'man'--- as long as the game was good.

Gamers are whores to the core, you make a damn good game using only blood diamonds and child labor, whois profits only go toward Canadian cleansing and billionaires shooting lions in sanctuaries, and we would buy an extra copy for friends to play on the couch.

CliffyB, make a good game, donate to some charities, and STFU.

To this day, I scratch my head over what I could have done better. I could have, never bought the game- even on discount. I could have not even bother following the game- but needed something to read in the bathroom. OH what could I have done better, to have avoided this toilet clogging 'Bro game' that would be considered uninspired if it had come out in 2005.

Politically correct or not, nothing could save this game.

Alternately, Lawbreakers was a ginormous piece of hog waste that was little more bloated cash grab made by an egotistical flash in the pan douche who hasn't had a fresh idea in over 10 years. Or as fresh as a "bulky, generic 'space marine' fighting equally generic 'evil alien space monsters' who look like deviant art LOTR orc doodles that were drawn by someone with a muscle bulk fetish." And for a quick dose of perspective, the last time Cliff came up with a successful "original" idea, George W Bush was still in office, iPod Nanos were the pinnacle of mobile technology, and Robert Downey Jr. was only three years sober and still TWO years off from staring in the ORIGINAL Iron Man.

TLDR; Cliffy B is, and always HAS been, an overrated hack who looks like the edgy lovechild of Papa John and Bobby Flay. He's literally this generations John Romero, and the notion that Gears lends him an ounce of credibility isn't a bet that I'd be willing to make. Gears was the right generic game at the right time. Full stop. Period.

It was an overpriced buy 2 play game that should have been f2p with cosmetics. No ranked or deathmatch for months, lackluster game modes, and very bland characters. I can look at Reinhardt and see that he's a tank. Nothing about the lawbreakers characters made their loadout recognizable. Cliff thinks he can poop gold but gamers, while many may have autism, are not stupid.

@The_Darkwalker: Yeah, that's why Marvel is really hurting for money these days. The 1.43 BILLION Black Panther pulled down was a massive disappointment as was the 1.12 BILLION Captain Marvel limped over the finish line with. The massive failure of Overwatch is another prime example barely scraping by with 2.5 BILLION.

Got some circle jerk thumbs up for your two syllable rhyming efforts tho. Squeezing the most out of that 2nd grade education XD

What a joke and another lame excuse from possibly the lamest game dev in history. The games didn't succeed because like most of what he's done going back to Unreal, he makes cheap knock offs of superior games and does them just before gamers move on to something else. I played Overwatch for a bit and it had all types of diversity from gay characters to treating women as equals in combat. It's wokeness didn't seem to hurt them. This is that guy that no matter what he goes through just never "get's it" and he's always the last guy in the room to not get it. Just stay retired, Cliff. The game industry has passed you by just like it always did.

Wow, I'm pretty sensitive to sjw nonsense and I have to say I don't remember this being an issue with the game at all. In fact the only real issue I remember having with it was that the aiming was terrible. Too much timed acceleration and aim assist made for some unresponsive controls. Otherwise I thought the game was great. It failed mostly because it came right at the height of Overwatch madness and there was no way anything could compete with it at the time. If Lawbreakers came out today it might have stood a better chance.

Usually, I think Cliffy gets more shit than he deserves but not this time. It's like he went on a soul searching journey and came out with all the wrong answers.

@twogirlsonecub: I agree. This is actually the first time I've heard about any of that stuff being in the game.

It's not really my favourite genre, but from what I heard, the game was fine. Just too similar too existing games that players had already invested in.

"Been less nice with my design ideas and more of a dictator with them."

For some reason my brain read that as...

If only I'd done exactly what I wanted to do and not taken advice from anyone, the game would've been amazing, just like me and every idea I have. Damn those other people tainting my game with their averageness.

I dunno why but every time this guy says anything, I just see arrogance, whether he intends that or not. Give nearly any experienced gamer a big old budget and say "design a shooter" and guess what, they'd do just as well as him. Or bad.

I played the game and I can assure you it had nothing to do with how political your game felt, no one even paid much attention to that.

The problem was the game committed the worst sin a game can- it was boring. Also with things like Overwatch as competition....well a lot could have been done differently. It wasn't even that bad of a game it just was not interesting in any way, and with interesting ones like Overwatch around the corner why bother with it?

I literally don't remember hearing anything about Lawbreakers's politics when came out.

In fact, I don't remember hearing anything about Lawbreakers when it came out.

So maybe that has more to do with it.

"It's okay to be political when your company or studio is established for great product FIRST."

This is the real lesson he learned. He buries the lede with talking about whether or not to inject his politics, when his true regret was that he just injected it too soon. The MCU was pretty apolitical when it started, compared to where it ended Phase 3. After the billion dollar enterprise was established you saw them start leaning into the cultural zeitgeist more and more.

Also, I think the bigger factor here was that Overwatch just sucked all the oxygen out of the room which already put LawBreakers at a disadvantage.

The game didn't suck and it didn't failed because of politics; it was just released at the wrong time with a bad marketing campaign against the worst competition. Stuff needs to become popular first before anybody cares about its political content and LawBreakers never got that much attention.

I agree with the "dev smells his own farts", although not his SJW farts but his I-am-a-video-game-legend, à la John Romero farts.

Denouncing "wokeness" is just as cynical as very loudly embracing it. Just make games with wokeness in them, but don't oversell and don't engage with the crowd that shit their pants in anger over it. Shouldn't be too difficult, right? Right?

"Woke" is a really, really stupid term for "left wing, SJW politics I don't like".

On the game itself, it had more to do with it not being that good, last I checked.

Dude Huge realizes he is bad at PR while doing more bad PR AND missing the mark AND betraying his beliefs.

I didn't even know this was part of the game, or that he did a bunch of masturbatory interviews about it, or whatever. All I know is that it had a stupid name, stupid ad copy, & looked it was impossible to play, and by the time I heard it was a lot better than its stupid name and ad copy suggested, the game was dead. Now he's out here doing poorly written posts where he basically throws his ideals under the bus to save his ego from... I dunno, having a bad brand? Having bad timing? Not lowering the barrier of entry fast enough to get asses on servers and pivoting towards microtransactions to cover costs?

Can't wait to read his ridiculous book, though. I want that uncut Huge in all of its self-immolating and oblivious glory.

So, don't ever play a modern Naughty Dog game (Last of Us, which part II is getting scrutinized for) or any Michel Ancel game that isn't Rayman (Beyond Good and Evil).
