Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition has officially been announced. Revealed at today's Nintendo Direct, the upcoming Switch title is a remaster of the 1999 RPG Chrono Cross, complete with several quality of life changes such as the ability to skip battles and a newly refined soundtrack. In addition to Chrono Cross, the game also includes Radical Dreamers, a text-based adventure game that served as a supplemental title to Chrono Trigger and was originally released on Super Famicom.

Shortly after the Nintendo Direct announcement, Square Enix shared the remaster will be available on other consoles as well. In addition to Switch, Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition is coming to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC via Steam. You can preorder the collection through the Nintendo eShop, Steam, and Square Enix's official website.

Admittedly, my main reason for hoping this does well is to see a Chrono Trigger remaster too.

Some of the comments reminded me of some of the really old threads on chrono cross. Definitely one of the more divisive fanbases out there. This game was long, long overdue for some exposure. Im really happy that they are doing this, because this series absolutely needs to be rejuvenated and brought back. I would love to see a remake of chrono trigger in my lifetime. Although opinions are split on cross, Im on the side of the fence that really enjoyed the game and it had a very long lasting impression on me. The game went through alot of changes, and at one point development hell. And it still came out with critical acclaim. Im absolutely buying this to help support the future of the franchise. And to some of the peps below saying not interested, pass. Cmon... let us have this one, The fanbase is so starved.

Change that battle music. Game would have been as recognized as CT if it didn't have that terrible battle song. Turned so many people off. Funny that its still probably the greatest OST of all time.

It looks like the PS1 game running in HD with some AA. It's more of a rerelease than a remaster. I love Chrono Cross, so this is pretty disappointing.

I'm gonna be honest - I have always hated Chrono Cross. It was a terrible sequel to Chrono Trigger.

It's fine if you don't like it. It's not everyone's cup of tea. It's worth noting that Chrono Cross has a perfect score on this exact site.

@LoveBird-: So does Deathloop. When has this site's scores ever meant anything.

@Thanatos2k: True, but to be fair, CC got its perfect 10 long before critics began scoring games based on how well they align with their political ideologies.

@Barighm: Sure, back in the old Kane and Lynch days where the scores were even less trustworthy.

@LoveBird-: Doesn't have a perfect score to me. I didn't like how CC doesn't play at all like CT did, and while it is an impressive package in its own right and definitely a terrific RPG, it does suffer a lot from bloat. You gotta remember CC released right when we were all getting tired of me-too turn based RPGs, so seeing CC come along and ditch a lot of the things that made CT fun and unique in favour of mechanics that just added to the saturation...well, it was kind of a downer. Now, if you held off on playing it until well into the dead JRPG era it would have been awesome, but at the time of release fans were wondering why Square didn't continue with the formula that made CT so awesome in the first place.

@Thanatos2k: @theguyskt: Chrono Cross is about as much as a sequel to Chrono Trigger as Final Fantasy 7 would be a sequel to Final Fantasy 6. With fanboys decrying and arguing the same points, in relation to story structure, characters, combat, time, settings, etc etc. If not CC a greater departure. I also thought CT was a better game ...game, but CC is a wonderful game onto itself. CC has a complex story structure, red herrings, lots of padding, and tons of battles and often referred to as a time-soap opera. It was widely loved by critics, but by its fans in the forums and gaming magazines it was a love it or hate it, do to the reasons above.

I would suggest to anyone to give CC and CT a go, but just remember they are very different games.

@jenovaschilld: Uh, no. Chrono Cross is a direct sequel to Chrono Trigger. Or were you not paying attention to the story?

Mechanically it's wildly different, one of the reasons it isn't a good sequel.

@Thanatos2k: .......Fan reaction was largely positive, though certain fans complained that the game was a far departure from its predecessor,Chrono Trigger; Chrono Crossbroke convention by featuring more characters, fewer double and triple techs, fewer instances of time travel, and few appearances ofTriggercharacters and locations.[3][28]Producer Hiromichi Tanaka and director Masato Kato were aware of the changes in development, specifically intending to provide an experience different fromChrono Trigger.[8][28]Kato anticipated and rebuffed this discontent before the game's release, wondering what theChronotitle meant to these fans and whether his messages ever "really got through to them".[28]He continued, "Crossis undoubtedly the highest qualityChronothat we can create right now. (I won't say the 'best'Chrono, but) If you can't accept that, then I'm sorry to say this but I guess yourChronoand myChronohave taken totally different paths. But I would like to say, thank you for falling in love withTriggerso much."[28]Tanaka added, "Of course, the fans of the original are very important, but what innovation can come about when you're bound to the past? I believe that gameplay should evolve with the hardware."[7]Kato later acknowledged that he could have "shown more empathy to the player" by making the story less complex, and acknowledged fans who felt the game was a departure fromChrono Trigger, noting that one can still "equally enjoy the game."[26].............

......Chrono Cross employs story arcs, characters, and themes from Radical Dreamers, a Satellaview side story to Chrono Trigger released in Japan. Radical Dreamers is an illustrated text adventure which was created to wrap up an unresolved plot line of Chrono Trigger.[24] Though it borrows from Radical Dreamers in its exposition, Chrono Cross is not a remake of Radical Dreamers, but a larger effort to fulfill that game's purpose; the plots of the games are irreconcilable.[24] To resolve continuity issues and acknowledge Radical Dreamers, the developers of Chrono Cross suggested the game happened in a parallel dimension.[25] A notable difference between the two games is that Magus—present in Radical Dreamers as Gil—is absent from Chrono Cross. Director Masato Kato originally planned for Magus to appear in disguise as Guile, but scrapped the idea due to plot difficulties.[24] Kato specifically felt that the game's large number of characters, as well as the difficult production schedule, did not allow him to develop the relationship between Magus and Kid.[26] In the DS version of Chrono Trigger, Kato teases the possibility of an amnesiac Magus.[27].........

If they had a chocobo, I am sure some would say it was a sequel to Final Fantasy 6.

@jenovaschilld: Hilarious, even the maker of the game knew it wasn't as good.

Again, the game is a DIRECT sequel storywise to Chrono Trigger. Just because they intentionally made the gameplay mechanics different does not in any way mean it is not a direct sequel, which it is.

Doubly so now that they've added extra stuff in Chrono Trigger itself to tie it in.

@Thanatos2k: I guess we disagree on what a sequel is, as CC has a completely different protagonists and bad guys, from the CT and you only see a few mentioned as ghosts, aside from the guy that raised the kids in the orphanage. A different timeline, and different plot line, a dimensional travel as opposed to time travel. I mean CC is to CT like Better Call Saul is to Breaking Bad or Jeffersons to All in the Family to Checking In. Like a spin-off if that. CC does not continue the story of CT and of its heroes which is set a generation or so after CT. IDK about steam versions of CT.

I did prefer CT over CC, it was not as good, but good for the direction it took.

@jenovaschilld: sequel: "a published, broadcast, or recorded work that continues the story or develops the theme of an earlier one."

Do you need a dictionary?

It is NOT a different timeline. It is the same timeline.

@Thanatos2k: It is the same argument of whether The Lord of the Rings is a sequel to The Hobbit. And again the Jeffersons where in the same timeline as All in the Family but that does not mean it is a sequel. CC is clearly a spin-off. Though CC was a generation moved on.

At best: Wait actually, I think CC is more like Xenogears. Xenogears was developed to be the next Final Fantasy after FF6, but they choose FF7 instead. They had a game idea..... Chrono Cross, which had a similar feel CT, threw a few ghosts in it, referenced a few areas, and called the dimensional jumping close enough to time jumping and hey.... we have a Chrono Trigger spin-off. With CT being enough of a name brand to sale CC. I have seen a many debate of CC/ CT, whether it was an actual sequel or spin-off or last minute grab of a name brand when the game came out, in forums, magazines and articles. And it is a weak argument then as it was now. While I am sure CC would have sold good enough, referencing it with CT helped the developers more. Though I have not seen what elements you said were added to the steam version, switch version- I am only referencing the original 99' version.

@jenovaschilld: Of course Lord of the Rings is a sequel to the Hobbit. How is that even an uncertainty. His publisher asked Tolkein for a sequel to the Hobbit and he wrote Lord of the Rings for them. It's not an argument, it's a fact.

Very different games indeed. I think CC is literally the best RPG from the old days, and still holds up as one of the best today. I wish they remade these games though, instead of doing lazy remasters.

Might wanna rethink the title for this article. Remake and remaster are two very different things. Got my hopes up for a minute. Alas, remasters are not much to write home about.

Not sure if the video showing was actually the remaster or not, but if it is, that is one lazy remaster. I've seen emulators that can take the PS1 game and do a better job, and the emulator does it on the fly. At the very least it should be called a re-release not a remaster.

Knowing S-E, they are going to charge way too much for it as well.

Come on Square... a remaster... you do this with all your PS1 title over the past few years and it was not for always for the good of it like if you can't do game like that anymore... get a hold of yourself Square and give us good JRPG... You did a great job with Octopath Travellers... continue on that path

It's a remaster, not a remake but I'll take it, finally a complete localization of the whole saga!
