Child of Eden: First Impressions

We get a closer look at the Child of Eden demo with which Tetsuya Mizuguchi revealed this Rez-like "synesthesia shooter."

First revealed at Ubisoft's E3 conference, Child of Eden is a "multisensory" shooter that combines showers of light and luminous sea creatures with pulsing electronic music that evolves or grows with the beats and samples generated in the explosive destruction of the obstacles in your path. Today, we took a closer look at the demo, again conducted by Tetsuya Mizuguchi, the game's creative director and creator of the similarly musical shooter Rez and blocky puzzler Lumines.

With its flying, tunnel-vision on-rails shooting, the game closely resembles Rez, albeit from a first-person perspective and rendered in glorious high definition at a smooth 60 frames per second. Mizuguchi also doesn't call it a sequel or direct successor to that earlier title, emphasizing Child of Eden's entirely different inspiration: the life theme, as he calls it, which manifests itself in the organic designs of the creatures to be shot at, including neon sea anemones and caterpillar-like creatures built of glowing cubes.

In our demo, Mizuguchi used the Xbox 360 controller rather than the controller-free Kinect system for the Xbox, as seen at the Ubisoft presentation. The controls seem simple and streamlined, with the left thumbstick used to move the reticle and the A button for locking on to a target. Also, with a physical controller, the vibration feedback at the heart of Rez is restored as part of the multisensory experience. Though a Sony PS3 version of Child of Eden is on the cards, no one is yet talking about Sony's Move capability, if any.

The game's high-definition kaleidoscope of color and light is lovely to behold and mixes the regular, tunnel-like environments (sometimes circular, sometimes square) with large, one-off structures. In the short demo, this included a giant anemone, a great, screen-filling wall built of endless glowing cubes, and a globe surrounded by the huge curved sides of what Mizuguchi calls a sound box: a vast wall with certain panels that can be targeted and hit to trigger different sounds.

These were looped vocals samples, in our case. Generally, the game's interactive audio included Lumines-like beats; its quality much improved over the PSP version of Lumines. Later, the background of the game looked much like a crisp satellite image of Earth, in keeping with the life theme and more conventionally a music video-style dancer. These acted as the backdrop to the psychedelic confetti of Child of Eden's busy, heads-up-display-free foregrounds. Child of Eden appears to be an essential title for the (still some way off) Kinect but will be just as good with the standard controller when it arrives, or so says Mizuguchi. There's no confirmed release window as of yet, but we'll be sure to have more as it becomes available.

Agreed with Peng33. E3 this year was pretty disappointing as far as actual innovation goes. This is one of the few innovative games I saw as well.

The people who want to know what the game is about or think it's pointless are kinda missing the point, methinks. Even the person who said it will get old fast might be missing the point. I for one loved Flower (I think it was probably inevitable it came up in discussion here), and can call it the second-best game I've ever played with a straight face. And that's coming from someone with 550+ games in his collection, and has been gaming since the Atari 2600. On to Children of Eden, though, I love everything Tetsuya Mizuguchi has done, and really am pretty ecstatic at this announcement. Because there was no mention of The Last Guardian or a sequel to Demon's Souls, and because Etrian Odyssey III had previously been announced, this was most likely my personal fave thing announced at E3.

This would look amazing in 3D on the PS3, having lots of glowy things rush out at you would be amazing especially if you could zap them with the MOVE. Would be a truly immersive package!! PLEASE DO IN 3D!!!

@Gelugon_baat ahhh, tis all good. im assuming the reason he diddnt use kinect was perhaps space or availability. or perhaps to show the Kinect haters that there was an alternative. im assuming the controller my be slightly more responsive, but like a mouse, hand movment will be more accurate. and to be honest, the way he 'conducted' the game: that was unreal. i want to do it too - note: edited. i said natal instead of kinect. old habits die hard

@bennae66 I do know Mizuguchi used the Kinect in the Stage Demo, in order to show that Kinect works for this game. What I meant in my earlier comment is that it is odd that he did not use Kinect for his demo for GameSpot and perhaps other journalist groups. Maybe I should have added one more line to my previous comment to prevent some misunderstandings. Your message suggests that I do not seem to know about this game's demo in the Ubisoft Press Conference.

@metalkid9 It does. There's the following statement above: "In our demo, Mizuguchi used the Xbox 360 controller rather than the controller-free Kinect system for the Xbox..." On the other hand, this doesn't speak well about the Kinect-support for this game if its own creator preferred the controller by default - even if he had used Kinect for the Stage Demo.

I watched the demo of this and honestly I'm not impressed. I agree that being able to use the controller is a plus, but if the game is so easily transcribed over to controller, then what is really the point? If a game that is developed for motion control is so easily ported, then what is the actual achievement. If there was something so unique to this game that REQUIRED motion control, then maybe they're on to something. The reason motion sensor controllers will never become what they're being marketed as, is because without any kind of force feedback or resistance to the user, you will always just be flaring your arms around in front of your tv. (Vibration in a controller doesn't constitute force feedback). 99% of the time, people play games to relax and unwind and enjoy entertainment. Not stand in the middle of the family room with their arms straight out for 3 hours playing a basic rail shooter. (Having amazing graphics nowadays isn't a selling point). Just my opinion though.

YES! No Kinect required! I was really worried that it would be only with the Kinect...this game look so beautiful and it seems like it will be a really cool experience.

wow, visually beautiful and stunning. I wonder though what all of these new developments - Kinect and Playstation Move - mean for games like Soul Calibur and Street Fighter?
