SMU has announced that John Carmack, cofounder and technical director of id Software, will address the first class of the college's new Guildhall game-development program. On July 7, Carmack will speak before students and faculty at the Dallas campus for the program's first day of classes.

"We're thrilled to have John Carmack kick off our program," said Dr. Peter Raad, director of the Hart eCenter at SMU. "John's reputation as someone who consistently unleashes the untapped possibilities of technology to enhance the gameplay experience truly complements what the Guildhall at SMU is committed to--providing a state-of-the-art education center that enables students to succeed in the rapidly evolving world of game development."

The Guildhall at SMU is an 18-month game-development certification program that will take students through coursework that gives them three completed games for their portfolios. Game-industry veterans, particularly those in the Dallas area, have been involved in the program's development and will take part in the program as teachers and mentors.
