Cannibal-Slasher The Forest Is Coming To PS4 In 2018

Forget what you learned in the Boy Scouts.

This weekend's PlayStation Experience has showed us a great number of new game reveals and announcements, and Endnight's The Forest is no exception. Debuting with a brand-new trailer, the survival horror title is making its way to PS4 in Spring 2018.

After surviving a plane crash that lands in a forest, you're left to fend for yourself. You'll get to enjoy the simple things in life such as fishing, exploring, building forts and the like--but uh, sprinkle some flesh-starved cannibals in there for good measure.

Now Playing: The Forest - PSX 2017: Multiplayer Trailer

Where this steps aside from the usual survival horror game is that it doesn't have any sort of NPC guidance. There is no quest system, and there is no clear story line to follow. As the player, you truly are left to your own devices to figure out how the world works, and how to stay alive until the sun rises again.

We first saw The Forest in 2013 as an early access title for Steam on PC. Since then, the game still hasn't quite reached a full launch, but it has been iterated on with guidance from its community. This weekend's announcement did not detail if the PS4 launch will be a full or early access launch.

Interesting premise. Has the potential to actually be something unique (not really guided in any direction; just roam and explore.) but at the same time that strength could be it's same weakness. Hopefully the developers won't completely leave us alone in the dark (survival horror reference.) as doing so may rob the overall experience and make it feel empty.

@videogameninja: Don't Starve owns this whole concept and genre at a level that's nearly impossible to copy.

The devs sprinkled in just enough crumbs and nuggets that by the time you start really understanding how to survive the various hazards and enemies, you'll also start to piece together the underlying structure and story. Incredibly rich, satisfying, and tuned gameplay.

The game does have a storyline but it isn’t given directly and you instead piece it together as you play. The eventual goal is to find your son who was in the plane crash with you and taken by a cannible in the opening cutscene.

Wow. I remember this game was supposed to launch in 2014/2015!!!

Looked awesome like a super insane Far Cry in the woods. Then like 3 years went by. I guess the game has been out on PC for years with people saying it's pretty shitty. I'll wait for reviews.

@nikolistary: People have not been saying it's shitty... Quite the opposite. On Steam it has a recent review rating of "Overwhelmingly Positive" (95%) and an overall rating of "Very Positive" (91%).

To put that in perspective, it's rated higher than GTA 5.
