Call Of Duty Will Still Release On PlayStation, Xbox Head Phil Spencer Says

Spencer made the announcement after speaking to Sony's own leaders this week.

It appears you'll still be able to answer the Call of Duty on PlayStation in the future, despite Microsoft's pending acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer made the announcement just a few days after the acquisition was revealed, answering one of players' most-pressing questions.

Speaking on Twitter, Spencer said Microsoft intends to "honor all existing agreements upon acquisition of Activision Blizzard and our desire to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation."

There were questions regarding Call of Duty's position as an Xbox exclusive in the future, but Spencer's statement appears to put those to bed--at least for now. It's also possible that some, but not all, Call of Duty games will come to PlayStation, or that Microsoft provides it as a Game Pass-exclusive and thus would require the service to be on PS4 and PS5.

There is no stopping Microsoft from making Call of Duty a console-exclusive franchise several years from now, but it would also go against the philosophy that Spencer's teams have adopted over the last several years. Despite purchasing Mojang Studios, Minecraft still gets support and even spin-off games on PlayStation and Nintendo systems.

Other Activision Blizzard brands remain question marks regarding exclusivity. These include Diablo, Warcraft, Overwatch, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, and other dormant franchises like Prototype and Singularity. However, there's a pretty good chance most of these will find their way to Game Pass, if the Bethesda Softworks library is anything to go by.

Microsoft's Activision Blizzard acquisition is expected to close in FY 2023, which begins later this year. It must be approved by regulatory agencies prior to being official.

This title is very misleading. That is not what he said. He said "Our desire is to keep CoD on Playstation" . Which is a very carefully worded statement. Sounds like there may be an ask to keep it there and he never mentions its our desire to keep FUTURE CoD games on Playstation. My guess is once this closes it will be the same statement as Bethesda. Games are available on platforms where Game Pass exists. And sooner or later they start blaming Playstation for not allowing Game Pass.

Phil knew there would be profit coming from Sony if they did not make COD exclusive to Xbox as MS will get a cut of the money for each copy brought by a Sony player as I have both an PS5 and Xbox. This is a good move as I see it.

He's only honouring existing agreements which Sony made with Activision. Key words are 'desire' and 'existing'. Future COD mainline titles post-merger and post-agreements will 100% be exclusive to Xbox.

The statement says he'll try, but not that it's gonna happen. Like the Bethesda situation.

They'll have the past games, not the forthcoming ones. The more this happens, first Bethesda,. now this, the rationale for buying a PS5 is becoming less apparent. EA could be next. Then what?

I haven't upgraded yet, but it def has to be Xbox.

@jagdedge124: Why xbox? I think this kind of makes that perfect PC/PS5 combo more prominent than ever, if the libraries start moving in different directions.

Keeping Call of Duty on Playstation is the smartest decision...you just can't have a profitable game like Call of Duty just going to one platform/Service...so who would pay for all the development cost?...the answer to that is now the Sony and PC gamers.

Congratulations to Mr. Spencer for showing what is going to be a great leadership at Activision as their future new CEO.

@johnny0779:

The thing is, is a fanbase of a game will follow the game regardless of platform, and not be succumbed to brand loyalty.

If COD goes exclusive to xbox/PC, the fanbase would just buy an xbox/PC to play it.

They need to make their money back, since they only sell 50% of the consoles Sony does.

@sladakrobot: Made up numbers XD

If we go by VGCharts, it's somewhere around a 60/40 split with Sony/MS on console sales. Not quite the "50% more" that Stick is trying to present. MS as a whole also has more cash on hand to spend than Sony as a whole. That said, I do love my PS5 ;)

It would be dumb to not have the newest Call of Duty on PS4/PS5. I think next year we'll see Call of Duty 2, Call of Duty 3, Call of Duty 4, Black OPS. Advanced Warfare, etc join Game Pass.

@sebalayo: lol what's more funny is that it may appear that PS fanboys still get their precious CoD franchise (for now) but the way you got to look at it, "No one wants an Xbox" but for me personally, I don't like paying for a full price for a franchise that is released annually... So if I can not only play the game on arguably the best console experience (graphically) but to also be included in my $15 monthly subscription, I think most would prefer THAT way of gaming (and still have over 100+ growing game library I can access for that same $15 a month)

The article made a good point... Just because its not going to be an Xbox exclusive (currently) doesn't mean it won't be years in the future... Especially if Sony continues to outsell the Xbox... Also he didn't say that it won't be a "game pass exclusive" possibility forcing Sony to allow Game Pass on PS, just together CoD back on their platform... Paying MS a royality or something.

Bottom line... Xbox wouldn't have spent $70 billion dollars NOT to take advantage of building their known "lacklustre" first party lineup... Especially if Sony was worried enough to have a meeting with Phil to find out MS intentions... because they know how strong the CoD franchise is on their console.

If Phil was REALLY smart, he would have got something from Sony, to allow them to keep CoD on PS...

Spider-man to Xbox confirmed?!?!?! That would be cool for Xbox owners

@Barighm: It's almost inevitable. Sony will have to make some compromises if they want Microsoft to do the same. Most exclusive games will remain on their current console but it seems that some are now going to be "migrating".

I don't foresee Spider-man being one of these due to Disney's involvement with the Marvel franchise but I could easily see games like Horizon, God of War, Days Gone, Uncharted, The Last of Us etc being thrown into the mix.

If MS are going to share their toys then Sony should maybe stop money hatting third party releases like FF7 remake and star wars old Republic remake. Everyone gets something then 🤷🏻‍♂️

It's the Zenimax/bethesda exclusivity queestion all over again. Everything will stay on playstation until the deal closes including the next COD game IW Modern Warfare sequel. After that all the new stuff will be Game Pass exclusive I suspect. Warzone will probably be a similar situation to Mincraft but new mainline COD campaigns and multiplayr will be Xbox GP exclusive once the deal is finalised. Not good for playstaytion, there gonna have to make their own FPS coz their 3rd person one n dones aren't gonna be enough.

Skeptical of this. Honoring existing agreements could just mean the next 1 or 2 proper CoD titles that were already in development for PS will get released there.

Beyond that, still feel like the more likely thing is Warzone continues to be supported on PS forever, but the individual titled CoDs become an Xbox/PC thing

@Spartan_418: I believe that's the case. Sony might have some deals prior to the Microsoft purchase with Activision. The game always been multiplatform and usually the deals that they usually make with call of duty tend to be DLC's which they get before any other platform.

If is just prior DLC's deals , can they really force microsoft to release the game in PS based on prior DLC's deals?

I'm thinking COD stays multiplatform on account on how massive it is, but all the other IPs are becoming Xbox exclusive.

COD stands to make more money for MS as a multiplatform property than as added value to GamePass, just like Minecraft.

@fatman98: War zone makes 1.9 billion a year and the yearly releases make a little less. So cut that in half....cause MS will release on Steam which will likely drive numbers up. Either way say it's 750 million they lose. To MS that is the marketing cost to drive up Game Pass subs. I would not take "it's our desire" to mean every CoD comes to Playstation without Playstation giving something up. Like Game Pass on PS

@keiser69: either way.....it is a foolish business decision for Microsoft to cut themselves off at the knees. Removing one platform that pulls in billions of dollars in revenue.

I myself, have watched Phil Spencer run this ship over the years. He is the sole reason xbox did a 180. He is also the reason a majority of gamers went back to xbox. I am one of them. He listens to what the gaming industry is yearning for.

Playstation did that during the PS4, they need to get somebody in their leadership doing that again. They currently have a numbers guy running the show, just like MS did during the xbox one launch debacle. Which drove customers out in droves, such as myself.

When you have people that love what they do. It is easy to make the product sell.

@fatman98: In theory I agree with you. They absolutely want to be on Playstation. But they want Halo on Playstation too. They want Game Pass just like Netflix or Apple TV or Amazon. Just an app on a device , that is what they are driving for and getting leverage to get Game Pass on Playstation or even better Nintendo would be more valuable to them than initial sales.

@agent_stroud: Spencer has already said that Starfield is going to be an Xbox exclusive. And, I dont blame them. They paid a fortune for the franchise, and it doesnt theoretically have a fanbase...yet.

As for the elder scrolls. Time will tell. But, Sony has done the same thing for eons as well. And with Microsoft killing off a majority of their good game studios before Phil Spencer came aboard (Lionhead, Pressplay studios). They need studios with teeth to compete with everyone else. And he realizes that.

Again, the real problem is....Sony is living in the 90s-2000s. And they are reluctant to keep up with the digital age. They need to realize the platform is evolving until it is too late. They are too stuck to the old model. Phil and Microsoft have found the new niche and are realizing this is the way of the future of gaming and Sony is fighting it. But, they are masters of their own demise. Even though they are some of the very ones that pioneered this business. Adapt or die.
