Call of Duty: Game Pass' Savior? | Spot On

Will Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 move the needle for Xbox Game Pass?

Call of Duty is one of gaming's biggest series. Xbox Game Pass is one of gaming's biggest services. It only makes sense then that one of Xbox's priorities--particularly after purchasing Call of Duty's publisher, Activision--was ensuring the next title in the series is available on Game Pass.

Fortunately for Xbox and Call of Duty fans already subscribed to Game Pass, Microsoft recently confirmed that the next Call of Duty, Black Ops 6, will be included in the subscription service. Yet we can't help but wonder if having Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 on Game Pass will actually move the needle for Microsoft. Sure, Call of Duty has a built in, loyal fanbase, but will fans who traditionally play on other consoles be motivated to enter the Microsoft ecosystem? Will those not wanting to shell out $70 to purchase the game outright be attracted by Game Pass' lower price point?

On this week’s Spot On, Tam and Lucy discuss that state of Microsoft and AAA gaming in general, the potential for a Game Pass price hike, and whether they think BLOPS 6 will be the title to give Game Pass a much needed shot in the arm.

Spot On is GameSpot's weekly news show in which managing editor Tamoor Hussain and senior producer Lucy James talk about the latest game news. Given the massive video game industry's highly dynamic and never-ending news cycle, there's always something to talk about. Unlike most news shows, Spot On will dive deep into a single topic instead of recapping all the news. Spot On airs each Friday.

worst case scenario, it won't move the needle that much in terms of subscriptions, but at the same time will give many gamers pause next gen. This gen most gamers have invested in the playstation ecosystem. Next gen, there will be more gamers moving to the xbox platform, whether thats on PC or on xbox consoles.

@blaznwiipspman1: I have heavy doubts about that. What with PC ports being more crap then usual (Especially if you use anything that isn't Steam), and Xbox not delivering any cool exclusives all gen.

@illegal_peanut: yes, that may be the case. Xbox has only delivered a few solid games and relied heavily on gamepass games to carry the burden. But compare that to Playstation, and you can say the same. Playstation has been pretty much hot garbage the entire gen. The only system that delivered solid games was ironically Nintendo and their 10 year old hardware.

@blaznwiipspman1: Compared to Sony, they're much worse. I can't really recall a good XBSX game outside of Hi-fi Rush and Gears Tactics. I can't even include Halo & Forza in that list. Due to them dropping the ball on those games hard. which is extra sad.

With PS5 We got GoW Ragnorak, Horizon Forbbiden West, R&C: Rift Apart, Demon Souls, FF7 Remake, FF16, Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Ghost of Tsushima, Returnal, Gran Turismo 7, and Stellar Blade. All of them are pretty solid games.

@illegal_peanut: sorry not interested in boring Sony movie games and walking simulators. Not my thing. Sony has dropped the ball hard this gen, that's a fact. Demon souls and ff7 are remakes, and remasters. Returnable lol. You're really scraping the bottom.of the barrel trying to find good games to play on the Playstation.

The only good game I'd ever consider buying a Playstation for is spiderman 2, which is admittedly fantastic.

Unfortunately Sony doesn't stack up to MS juggernaut gaming catalog. Halo infinite alone demolished every single game on the Playstation library this gen. Forza horizons 5 is a fantastic game. I will admit that xbox has dropped the ball on exclusive titles.outside a few core games. But unlike the Playstation which has had pretty much hot garbage the entire gen, Xbox has provided absolutely fantastic experiences with gamepass, which more than made up for any slack and then some. That is ultimately the difference.

@illegal_peanut: am I delusional? Literally nobody cares about horizon forbidden west, or even god of war, and the 100 other remasters and remakes on the playstation. The top played and purchased games on playstation all belong to MS. The single player offerings that sony has are all fillers that only a few care about, and most wouldn't care if they were gone or not. Aside from spiderman, which is literally the only game worth talking about that sony offers right now, everything else is meh on playstation. That isn't delusion, thats fact.

@blaznwiipspman1:

Halos trash, halo died with halo forge, anything before that is legendary.

Halo is just a husk inbreeding with destiny.

Forza 5's a sensor ship with boring worlds, only Forza 3 and Forza 1 were best sadly 1's graphics don't hold up.

Microsofts legacy stands on gears of war or doom, or prey remake, or quake DK yeah remake.

@Crazy_sahara: NO wait xbox has a slew of great triple A exclusives such as.... well they don't have any.lol, their new goal is if you can't beat them, try to take it all away from them and pretends it's theirs. They are failing miserably in the console gaming so they are scooping up what ever they can to try and stay relavent and to try and hide this they do what oh here's the last 1 or 2 exclusives we have we will make them multiplatform. it's classic business 101. Xbox as a trade is DeAD, Microsoft as a service is what it will be and soon it will be on playstation and nintendo. People will be dumb enough to pay for programs you never really own anything and will destroy physical gaming just like it did music and movies. It's an unfortunate end of an era and it's only gonna get worse.

@jj__garcia: Listening to this, Jeff Gerstmann's podcast, and NextLander's podcast, they're all saying that Game Pass subs have flattened out and, with hardware sales so low, there aren't a lot of new people entering the ecosystem and subscribing. But also, yeah, I thought Game Pass had a zillion subs already. I assume somebody like Jeff Gerstmann has a pretty good read on the industry though, so if he's saying Game Pass is in trouble, I kinda take his word for it.

Why would it? The folks who loves playing COD on Xbox already have an Xbox. They probably already have Gamepass and if they don't, well then you've just screwed yourself out of the $70 they were going to spend on your next COD for a few extra sign ups.

No, the needle will not move much. A lot more PS5’s out there than XSS/XSX. It’s not going to convert those players to buy Xbox. They will just buy it for the PS5. The numbers game MS will be manipulating them and mostly going off Gamepass numbers. Most Xbox users have GP by now.

I never knew it needed saving. And no, nobody is going to switch from PS to Xbox to play one game for the price of a sub. At least not enough people to increase Game Pass subs significantly. Most diehard COD players play COD and COD only. So Game Pass would be useless to them.

@bdrtfm: Well you have to see it this way. It's $15 to play EVERY CoD game. Mind you all the CoD games cost like $700 to buy them all. So even with the subprice, it's kind of a steal. If you wanted to play all the CoD games.

"Game Pass' Saviour"

Gamepass doesn't need a "saviour" since it is raking in almost half a billion dollars every month via the current subscription numbers. Like every company, Microsoft is just chasing growth to satisfy investors. CoD will still sell extremely well in stand-alone sales from long term fans. What the day one introduction of CoD to Game Pass might achieve is drawing in people who have never played CoD before, or bring back people who became disillusioned with previous CoD games. $70 might be a hard sell for a game you might not like and end up with buyers regret, but the price of Game Pass is definently easier to swallow, and if you don't like Cod, you still have plenty of other titles to choose from. In either case, Game Pass is hardly going to disappear if this experiment doesn't pay off. The worst that will happen is that Microsoft will avoid introducing big, subsidiary flagship titles to Game Pass on day one.

@just_visiting: I'm exactly in this camp. I would never pay ÂŁ70 to play CoD but I will potentially play it on Game Pass. I imagine I will enjoy the single player campaign, as long as it has one this time. I wouldn't play multiplayer.

I have gamepass for PC. It's too cheap to not get right now. It's 100% unsustainable at it's current price unless MS is happy to just keep funding it without a return for whatever reason. You literally just have to play 2 games in a year get your money's worth.

Even the yearly CoD fan is smart enough to do the math and realize that buying the game is cheaper in the long run. Game Pass can only be profitable if the majority of consumers never cancel their subscriptions, and I can't really see that ever happening.

At this point I don't think Xbox can be saved. MS as a publisher (who buys already established properties lul) will be just fine though.

I just love how anyone could think that over 500 million every month, Every Single Month, means something needs to be saved. Yeah, 34 million subscribers as of February would equal almost 600 million. I took off 100 million just to be fair. Meanwhile on PS5, I have to figure out why I have a PS Plus Extra subscription and whether to keep it or downgrade, because they add crap, month after month.

@chuckratm1: But that’s the difference between the two. Sony has never put into PS Plus premium or PSNow like Gamepass has. Sony makes their money off of their exclusives, just like Nintendo does. Just look at Stellar Blade. It wasn’t even a grade “A” exclusive but it was received well and made them a lot of money domestically and around the world. And Sony didn’t really market it big time. Now take Hellblade. Wasn’t marketed at all, wasn’t cheap on Gamepass, and even though it got good reviews, it hasn’t sold like it should. Now the question is, in the future, what happens? Big, AAA games are so expensive and take longer to develop that does the impatient gamer mind waiting years for great games. And even COD has lost gamers because not everyone wants to play a more violent Fortnite. So they have a lot riding on BlackOps 6.

@Viper13579: Hellblade is one of those games that just doesn't have mass appeal. Visually it's almost unparalleled and the themes it explores are important to a small cross section of people but the gameplay boils down to what are essentially quick time events, a feature that is thankfully mostly consigned to history and sealed it's doom as a game not everybody is going to want to play. Stellar Blade on the other hand has a fast paced combat system that has proven popular across many similar games and it has a protagonist that many gamers find sexually attractive which is a sad but true factor in the success of a game. We seen it with the Tall Lady in Resident Evil and we have seen murmurs of complaints on the internet regarding the female protagonist of the Upcoming Ubisoft Star Wars game because the character isn't "as sexy" in the game as the actress who depicts her is in real life and are accusing Ubisoft of purposefully making her less attractive ingame to serve some conspiracy theory level agenda that developers are avoiding making characters that people would find attractive. With the state of the gaming community now, i'm almost glad that i'm too old and too busy now to play anything other than single player games for 1 or 2 hours on a Saturday night when the kids and wife have went to sleep.

I mean it's hard to say. Most of Xbox's biggest GamePass IPs haven't been doing great on their own service with very low player retention. And a lot of Game Pass first games have been very hit-miss.

BUT! If Activision Blizzard can lose that 10QI think they had previously. And start delivering what the fans want with its IPs. I can see GamePass subs going through the roof like Netflix back in the 2010s. And XBSX/S consoles selling better than the XB360 Did.

Game Pass is a great landing place for games I wouldn’t have cared came and gone and would have ended up playing as a retro livestream 15 years later.
