Call of Duty: Cold Warfare next up for Treyarch?

Studio reportedly seeking "Vietnam War-era tunes, as well as Cuban, African, and Soviet Union music," pointing to guerrilla warfare hot spots of '60s and '70s.

Source: The video game blog called That Videogame Blog.

What we heard: As Call of Duty: World at War was being finalized last fall, its developer indicated that it could be the final Call of Duty game set during World War II. After saying that the now-best-seller's setting had already been decided when Treyarch came on board, senior producer Noah Heller dropped a major hint that it would be the last entry in the series based on the 1939-1945 conflict.

"I won't let your readers read into the comment too much, but we are showing the final battles of the Pacific and the European Theater, and that lets us put a close to the war," he told OXM UK magazine last year. "I'm sure game companies will be making World War II games for years to come, and World War II is a very classic war. But we're happy that we put the war to bed."

This week, a That Videogame Blog article sparked a rumor firestorm that Treyarch may move the series to another Pacific Rim locale: Vietnam. Citing a "reliable" source, the blog reported that, "Activision is looking to license music for 'Call of Duty 7,' music that gives some serious hints as to the locations the game may take us. Mentioned were Vietnam War-era tunes, as well as Cuban, African, and Soviet Union music. The source says Call of Duty: World at War's senior producer Noah Heller is involved, so it looks like Treyarch is once again developing."

The official story: Activision reps covering the Call of Duty franchises politely declined to comment.

No Caption Provided

Bogus or not bogus?: Looking not bogus, given that apparently That Videogame Blog's source was pressured to recant. Several hours after the original story went live (cached version linked above), it was hurriedly replaced by an apologetic note.

"Whoops, looks like talking about this is too soon for some people and our source has requested of us to remove the story," reads the new post.

Although an intriguing concept, Vietnam-era shooters have proven problematic in the past, with Battlefield: Vietnam, Men of Valor, Vietcong, Conflict: Vietnam, and 2004's Shellshock: 'Nam '67 selling poorly. (The latter two games were also fragged by critics.) Given the multiple locales, another possibility could be a game set in the hotspots of the decades-long conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union. Call of Duty: Cold Warfare, anyone?

Jungle Warfare, Guerrilla Warfare, Island Warfare... Whatever the name, Treyarch needs to make some changes to the MP to make it compete with MW1 if they want to make a good game. WaW and MW2 both fell short when trying to match the online experience of COD 4. As for the campaign, they both proved to be outstanding, with Nazi zombies and Spec Ops to keep you playing even after beating the game. If this new War-era setting shows the hell that is guerrilla warfare, and if the MP is taken seriously (no more commando or overpowered weapons + better spawns on certain gametypes)... Then, and only then will treyarch prove themselves to be better than IW. It isnt a competion, but if it was, my vote would be for IW... Anyone that disagrees doesnt know what they are talking about, and if u dont agree i could care less... I just wanted to share my opinion, and try to help them take the Call of Duty series in the right direction.

Going over the top in any video game would become an irritating affair, especially on Veteran mode, I'd prefer the slaughters of trench warfare keep to the history books. If you've ever played Medal of Honour Allied Assault and done the Omaha beach level on hard, you'l have an idea, just times it by 10, damn was that tough.

I'd like to see a WWI Call of Duty. all the missions the ysend you on would have to be the goriest, most bloody suicide missions of the war. and it would be cool if the characters you play as (names never revealed) end up being the unknown soldiers.

@pl4yer_f0und ...its the same game engine man. And when WaW came out everybody was just saying how they took the MW design approach and put ww2 to it. Suddenly MW2 is overhyped and treyarch is everyones hero...

Personally, I'm not much into playing a game based on a war my country foolishly entered and lost. I'm all for another go at WWII, this time with ALL FACTIONS playable. I hated the fact that WaW excluded the Brits. But the awesome Red Army sequences made up for it. We'll see...

I've been waiting a long time for a CoD Vietnam era game. I honestly don't care who designs it, or what studio releases it, or it magically falls out of the sky from an alien spaceship, as long as the end result is an awesome game.

Thank God Treyarch's making this one. MW2 sucked balls, IMO. Not enough carnage, meh storyline. The only thing that was good on it was the graphics. Other than that, it was MW all over again with fancier toys. Besides, IW's just too damn pushy. They act like that own everything that is COD. I'm glad Activision finally took them down to size.

Personally I h8 treyarch. They only sell as much as IW games because the IW games paved the way for the CoD games Treyarch develops.

I don't know why so many people hate on treyarch, sure they killed cod3, but cod waw made up for that, it was much better than mw2. Im looking forward to this and medal of honor, but I hope to god they keep the cod4 engine for this game, the mw2 one sucked

I personally like Treyarch/Activision's World at War much better than Infinity ward's MW1 and MW2. I really like historically combat. So I am just really excited to see what Treyarch has up their sleeve for the next COD

I wish Activision comes out with a Space Age Call of Duty! I'm not talking about so far into the future you can't believe it, But something along the lines of the movie Avatar. Where weapons and machines still have a current tie in with todays society, but also look very futureistic! After production of 7 the Vietnam era is complete. Because I think that is a very strong background to get into and many neat ideas could be brought into that game! But definetly after 7 I feel they should look into a futureistic game! Enough with the world war 2 era. There are plenty of games from that day in age already out there.

Tbh i liked W@W was a nice change from playing cod4 but they should combine customisable kill streaks from MW2 and the dismemberment from W@W but no vehicles :)

i for one disliked call of duty: world at war! In my eyes Treyarch are not the best developers for a Call of Duty videogame. If they are making the 7th installment to Call of Duty i for one may not buy it unless it looks much better than WaW.

@ Carr2010, did you play cod 5? it was slow as hell and basically cod4 with a ww2 costume on, the only thing they did right was keep the class setups like the old games but it sucked arse in playability too. i've played since the start of cod and IW make a better game end of...

Battlefield Vietnam I think was a great game. It was just like BF 1942 except it used different weapons, tanks, jets instead of planes, and helicopters? GS gave it 8.5, i give it 9.0. Very good grapics for 2004. & Sound effects. In fact that vietnam game has the highest ratings of vietnam games. (So far) As far as COD: Vietnam? I suppose if they played there cards right they could bring light to that shadowed war, one problem though. Some very horrid things happened in that war... things most people don't want to know about.....How they would traverse this without making a very brutal game that might shock some people i don't know. Without a doubt though someone has to, the game will be rated M with blood and gore.. If anyone has a chance it's probably COD.

Okay, just to let you IW fanboys know that if Ifinity Ward came out with the next game, you guys would be totally sucking there dicks. It wouldn't matter if it was a WWII game or not you would be deep throating that game because it's Infinity ward who would be developing it. I could tell you right now if the next cod didn't have the developers name on it and there were rumors of IW doing it you would be all over it. Months later before it came out, Treyarch would be on the bottom of the game, "Oh, Treyarch....wtf screw this". That's exactly what would happen.....stupid fanboys don't know the difference between a good game and a bad game.....I end my case

if treyarch does a cold war game...expect to fight in vietnam, korea, africa, cuba, etc...so many battles of the cold war. Im sick of ww2 though W@W was great....better than MW1 and 2 imo. Lets hope they keep in the carnage that worked so well in W@W. I have no idea why so many people hate Treyarch and W@W. ...my guess is they never played it and just assumed it was gay because it has the old ww2 setting...MW fanboys, play W@W...you will love it.

I would really love more WW2 games, I don't care if WW2 was drained out in FPS, I want more.. But maybe next time they should focus on a British campaign or a German campaign etc, I'm pretty sick of playing for the same side over and over..

why do people think the ending would be the Americans losing? The story doesnt have to be a LEGIT part of the war... There can be a side story.. For example: A brother has been seperated from his other brother, and in the end, he finds out he is dead... its a dumb example, but just saying it can be a side story.

a vietnam COD game would be tough, and I don't think they'll do it. The name of the game is Call of DUTY, not Call of Draft. Opinion of the Vietnam war was so negative, and the political subterfuge was so severe, that I don't think it can be glorified in the way that COD games do. I think a Cold War game where you play in some sort of rapid response squad (similiar to the squads in Rainbox 6, a multilateral force of NATO's best soldiers) and play out conflicts throughout the whole time period) Maybe...like a stealth mission in Cuba, pre-Bay of Pigs, an assasination or rescue in Vietnam, The Six-Day War, the Contras, Afghanistan (the soviet invasion, not ours) There are tons of conflicts from 1945-1990 that have never been used in video games that a history nerd like me would love to see!

It seems like everyone on the bandwagon hates on Treyarch, the past is the past and World at War was a solid game. IW may be a little more progressive but these guys are far from terrible and I'd love to see them handle Vietnam. I loved how certain aspects of World at War completely go for fun rather than practicality - for instance molotovs really aren't very good but they're hilarious, so is the sawed-off double barrel, and everybody gets a laugh out of zombie mode which totally pisses on historical fact. Come to think of it they should either continue zombies in the next one or release it as it's own game one day, a whole paranormal zombie game with the same four douchebags of WWII.
