Call Of Duty Black Ops 4 Will "Push The Envelope," Activision Says

Activision also confirms it is working hard on the PC edition.

We're just a few days away from learning lots more about Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, but ahead of that, publisher Activision Publishing continues to tease the military shooter. During an earnings call today, Activision Publishing president Coddy Johnson started off by praising developer Treyarch for their "proven track record of innovation"; the studio created the uber-popular Zombies mode and also the Pick Ten multiplayer system that debuted in Black Ops II (and might be featured in Black Ops 4, if a recent tease is to be believed).

Johnson said Treyarch is not resting on its laurels with Black Ops 4. "This is a game that is not just going to build on our strengths; it will continue to push the envelope in innovation," he teased. "You will see that in the core game itself, where we have a number of new, exciting developments."

Now Playing: Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 - Teaser Trailer

Black Ops 4 is coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, as well as PC. Activision is pouring in significant resources to make the PC edition great, it seems. Johnson said Activision plans to put "significant dedicated resources" into the PC version, and that's good to hear.

There have been rumours online about Black Ops 4 not having a traditional campaign and adding a battle royale mode. These are unconfirmed rumors for now, but we may learn more when Activision announces more details about the game during its May 17 reveal event.

Intriguingly, Johnson said Black Ops 4 will factor in data from the "billions" of hours that gamers have spent playing Call of Duty games. He said Activision has access to in-depth and real-time data about what people play and enjoy, and Black Ops 4 will reflect this.

Black Ops 4 launches on October 12, which is about a month before the usual Call of Duty release. Activision hasn't said why it shifted the date, but launching ahead of the expected juggernaut Red Dead Redemption 2 (October 26) may have something to do with it.

If they don't have a single player campaign, I'm not buying it.

People are getting all upset about no campaign, and I didn't like the idea at first but think about it, is it really that much of a shocker?
The campaigns seem to get worse each game because of how little effort they put in due to the multiplayer being what really made the game popular.
Out of all the people who buy CoD games what do you think the majority gets it for? I've had people over 6 or 7 years ago back in high school tell me that they only buy the games for multiplayer and don't even bother with the campaign, so what do you expect? Or do you like paying $60 or more ($80 - $90 here in Aus) for an < 10 hour campaign that isn't even good? Then you end up spending potentially hundreds more hours on the multiplayer anyway.
I really would love another campaign as good as World at Wars, but you know that's not going to happen, so I'd rather them spend the money, time and effort on multiplayer and zombies instead.

Yeah I'm sure that data about people's "enjoyment" *cough cough* purchasing habits will be put to greeeaaatttt use. I have no doubt of that.

When I hear Activision is pushing the envelope, I just think of someone handing Kotic a brown one stuffed with cash or a cheque.

No campaign = no play. And isn't it ironic that you're "pushing the envelope" by taking away traditional campaign and adding battle royale?

No matter how hard you push the envelope, it will always be stationary.

It seems like only yesterday i remember that "hate trend" going around for this franchise....it's still going.

*sigh* Ok...let's be fair. CoD has been around so long that it's not even worth getting upset about, It's like second nature now. It's just sorta there. Now i have been guilty of jumping on the "hate trend" bandwagon before. But look, after playing the games for myself. They're ok, Not fantastic, but I see the appeal. I also see the appeal for the more futuristic side of CoD.

But, let's be honest. Activision, you need to let this franchise breathe!

They have been putting out annual releases for Call of Duty...since 2005!!! Can you believe that? That's not counting re-releases or ports. I am aware that there's 3 different developers for the franchise, but look, if the Assassin's Creed franchise has taught us anything, is if you constantly crank out game after game after game every year, they will eventually become a shell of their former self. I am speaking as not really a fan of the series, but more of an observer. Over-Saturation is a bad thing, regardless what it is. Too much of one thing can be detrimental.

Sorry, but I remember 2009 when MW2 came out and you assholes fucked PC royally with P2P matchmaking and no dedicated servers. The complete bs you used to justify it, saying there would be fewer hackers was completely opposite what happened.

I never bought, and will never buy, a CoD game because you forgot where CoD started (PC) and turned the game into a soulless console crash cow.

And its pathetic that you think turning to PC now will save you. As a PC player, that experience tarnished the brand for me, and I have many other options. So pour resources into it; it's still part of an overmilked IP that's a shadow of what it was, and the PC market isn't as easy to pillage.

By push the envelop, they really mean, take aspects from other games currently popular, and shoehorning them into their own game. I wouldn't even be surprised if there was some sort of battle royal mode, even though it really wouldn't suit.

COD and pushing the envelope doesn't really mix. Getting rid of single player and adding a battle royale mode isn't pushing the envelope.

If they want to "Push the envelope", try including an actual respectable single player campaign like Titanfall 2 showed was possible...

With no campaign this should be 'free to play'.

i was gonna make some derogatory comment but in fairness the black op cod games are usually the better ones!

Still its all hype and micro-transactions but they aren't the first and only ones!

If you enjoy paying £60 for map pack content, go ahead.

At this point, the only way they could truly "push the envelope" is by not having DLC and micro-transactions, and just giving us a 100% complete game. But then, this is Activision, so that'll never happen.

Black Ops is the only Call of Duty series I've ever particularly liked and I've only purchased them for the campaign. Codblops3's Robocop vs Terminator campaign was hilariously great and I was looking forward to a continuation of that theme.

The fact that they won't just outright say it has a campaign is pretty telling.

Thanks for saving me some money I guess?

Also, the zombies mode is terrible, how do you screw up zombies so hard?

While I usually fire up when games take out singleplayer content for multiplayer content (looking at you fighter genre), I'm actually in favour of this. Most people don't buy COD for their crappy campaigns, its always multiplayer. Even myself, I played maybe the first level or two of BlackOps 3 before I got bored

@nabinator: Hit the nail on the head. Why are people angry that they aren't able to spend money on a shit campaign when they'll probably end up spending more time on the multiplayer anyway?
