The Wii, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 skirmish isn't the only format war going on in the tech world these days. There's also a tussle between Toshiba's HD-DVD and Sony's Blu-ray formats to be the high-definition-ready successor to the DVD.

Another shot was fired on both fronts this week, as a veritable posse of movie studios and consumer electronics companies jointly announced a summer sales promotion to drive sales of Blu-ray players. From July 1 to September 30, customers who purchase qualifying Blu-ray players--yes, the PS3 qualifies--will receive five free Blu-ray movies from a list of 21 choices.

The eligible free titles are listed below. Full details of the offer will be released on the format's official Web site.

Babel

Blazing Saddles

The Corpse Bride

The Italian Job
Kiss of the Dragon

The plot of Babel was definately written by an adult with a grasp of what makes a good story. It's motifs. themes, sense of conflict, character development, and pretty much everything else about the movie is top notch. The type of things that win awards. I also wouldn't say the events are unbelievable or farfetched. The only character that even acts out of place in the movie would be the deaf japanese girl close to the end. And I wouldn't even consider that out of place entirely, it was pretty obvious throughout the movie that maybe she had a few loose screws. Perhaps the farfetched thing you are refering to is the fact that the single incident that occurs in the movie affects people all over the world. I thought they did a good job of tieing the stories together in a believable manner. It all goes back to the theme of people being more united than they think and separations like language or ethnicity are trivial in the long run. Actually the only truely farfetched thing in the movie is the way the people on the bus reacted to brad pitt when he was trying to find help for his wife. I know why it was there, but I don't think people would really react like that in real life. The Departed on the other hand seemed to be the movie written by 13 year olds out of the two. It was good, but definately not reward worthy. Mark Walhberg's character was a little too over the top to be taken seriously. Some of the dialogue was laughable. The story wasn't original in any way. And the ending made me want to turn off the movie(even though it's supposed to I suppose, but you know what I mean). Not to mention overall Babel accomplishes much more as a work of art. But I agree that both movies are good. _____________________________________________________________ Timmy, I'm going to have to disagree with you on Babel cause it has to be one of the worse movies ever made that got good ratings. Babel was a coincidental movie that was thrown together really crappy. How do I know this? Well I watch about 3 to 5 movies per week in the theater and by now I have a REAL good feeling on how a VERY GOOD movie should be made. But when you have people talking about hairy monster on a semi serious film, in this case Babel, I start to laugh and think....where is this film leading to? But I guess some humor is good isn't it? Going back to the roots, Babel is another movie like Crash. Only WORSE. The story was WEAK, some acting was just plain cheesy, and I can go on. Comparing The Departed and Babel. The Departed is definately a better film over & aside from what people say, remake of "Internal Affairs" which includes all 3. I'm sure fanatics know who truely watched all 3 films and say the american version downplayed it. Before you go on and judge a film, its good to watch MANY films to really criticize a flick.

Back to OWNING a video production company. We output Blu ray when called upon for HD specs. HD-DVD.....Oh yeah, the thing you can get for $300 at best buy to play $20-25 movies. Blu ray has the ability to go up to 100 GB per disc. It is technology of the future and when architects, studio houses, IBM, and Wal-mart start backing up to Blu-Ray you'll have your answer, and probably your Wii to. I would guess that the, while politically incorrect, cheap azz kids is right on. I have a 53 HD 1080P TV, 2 23" Samsung 720P TV's, and more monitors in my house than I can shake a stick at. (My favorite is still my 23" CRT NEC monster 80lb monitor.) Stupid kids who's parents won't give them money for a PS3 think they make the world go round. Hate to break the news, but blockbuster online and 1700 Blockbuster stores just went with Blu-ray. Say whatever you will about Netflix. It's comparing Wal-Mart to Target. The market is big enough for both to compete. Blockbuster Just bought tens and tens and probably tens of thousands of Blu-Ray Movies. The comment about XBox not including HD-DVD in it's new Elite is definitely a sign of waivering affection. Little boys can't afford nice toys. Go to Rent-A-Center and get a job...Then a PS3. Just for record HELLBOY is awesome in 1080P.

Please do your research online all those still on here claiming Blu ray is a failure... Blu ray is totally dominating the HD format war... and the crazy thing is that its not even extremely popular yet, just wait until it really picks up.. and please don't talk trash about them until you watch one in full 1080p glory!! They really do look freakin amazing!!

Babel, Corpse Bride, Devil's Rejects, Italian Job, Underworld: Evolution probably the best of that batch. It's hard to forgive the repugnant CG effects of Transporter 2, though I like Jason Statham.

The Devil's Rejects is by far the best movie on that list. But I think if Ps3 want's to sell more consoles they should come out with 5 quality games per month and the 100$ price drop plus the 5 free movies. Also I made a point on the subject about Ps3 selling more consoles than the Wii in Australia, that the Ps3 is only selling for the blueray player, this proves my point and shows what Sony is thinking, Ps3 is just a cheap blueray player.

it really bugs me how stupid average joe is and how companies play him like a fiddle. if that made no sense to you, what i mean is that the best console for every generation almost never wins because of its price tag. we saw that with the xbox and now we may see it with the ps3. the xbox was better than the ps2 in its processor and a few other things. the online gameplay was worthwhile. now, if you actually understand the specs of these two consoles (putting wii aside for the cheapassed losers) then you are clearly able to see how much better the ps3 is. yet now there is fear that the ps3 wont win this generation, unlike its predecessors ps2 and psone dominating their generations. every step of the way sony first did cd, then dvd, now blu-ray. microsoft is sitting on the dvd bubble. i hate how they are basically saturating the market on cheap equipment. the ps3 will win this generation because they are the only ones who have taken a step up in their format (nintendo already a format behind). the ps3 may have a slow start but the sales for the ps2 are still way too good. even if sales are bad right now for the ps3, the sales for the ps2 will still make up for it. i believe that slowly you will see ps3 take over ps2 and once that happens ps3 will explode into the lead in this generation. i dont think that it is the 360 and wii that is holding the ps3 down; its price tag definately has a little bit to do with it, but the ps2 is also slowing ps3 sales and once ppl start to make transitions to the ps3, it will begin to dominate this generation

I understand all replies made to my last comment but the truth is that the consumer gets poorer and the companies get richer. It's obvious that consumers are gonna go for the cheaper solution. PS3 is far better than the Wii technology wise but the Wii still outsells. Why? It's the cheapest alternative and still has good quality. As for HD-DVD players, it's cheaper than Blu-ray players and cost less to make. Blu-ray nor the PS3 are capable of dominating the market in their fields because cheap is where it's at these days. The average consumer is most likely to go for cheaper stuff that still works well. Unless you can get better for cheap, don't even try competing. Oh and the point made earlier about: "The only people who complain about the PS3's price tag are cheap kids who cannot afford it and go out to get a Wii" Wake up! A great majority of the consumer gaming market is made up of cheap kids. That's exacly why the ps3 is losing! Teens will probably go for ps3 cuz they got jobs and have nothing else to spend on. Adults probably won't buy one because they go bills to pay. PS3 can only go for teens hearts but there are more than just teens out there who play video games.

"The only people who complain about the PS3's price tag are cheap kids who cannot afford it and go out to get a Wii" I owned all 3 systems, and I'm not a poor kid. I complained about the PS3 because I was pissed off at the fact it lost all the exclusives I bought it for and would prefer to play on Xbox 360 anyways (achievements, leaderboards, XBL > crappy free online that usually isn't supported). I was super happy with my PS3 until that point though, so I can't knock the system itself, I was just dissatisfied that I spent money on it for nothing.

In other news... Adobe Premiere will output ONLY to both DVD and Blu-Ray... NOT HD-DVD! This is very big news as Adobe is huge in the Design field, and many designers use it to make video games, so your Hi-Def output is slated to run on Blu-Ray only for Adobe.

theh8er I completely agree with you. The only people who complain about the PS3's price tag are cheap kids who cannot afford it and go out to get a Wii as their only option and then bam! As soon as you know it their Ninten fanboys. Don't get me wrong I'm no fanboy but the 360 and PS3 is the true future of gaming.

I'm not buying any Blu-ray or HD films until it all settles and the consumer price of the discs improves. The UK is a rip off as it is, I'm not paying these prices for films.

Ok I love when people who have no idea what they're talking about post. First of all to the people saying Blu-Ray discs only hold more data your wrong. Get in your car go to best buy and watch a blu-ray on a 1080p TV. the picture quality is unreal. Watch a movie like blazing saddles thats over 30 years old and see how amazing it really is. I am no fan of Sony but their product is awesome. I keep hearing people post on here about how high-def TV's are too expensive for the average consumer. Please stop this. If thats coming out of your mouth your probably a college kid or some sort of student and your not the average consumer. If the limit on your credit cards is $500 your not the average consumer. In a few years you will reach average consumer status when your out of school and making a living for yourself. Also take into account that Sony (Blu-Ray) as well Toshiba (HD-DVD) does not consider students average consumers. They consider 25-50 middle class working families the average consumer and thats who spends the most money are home entertainment. Most middle class families either have or are thinking of purchasing an HDTV, and in turn are looking for HD content to play on those TV's. Also realize that all you guys talk about is movie data for Blu-Rays. You forget about the other very important aspect of Blu-Ray which is video games. More data = more detailed environments ( more people fighting, more explosions, more schrapnel, more fire, more bullets, more terrorists to kill the last of which is my favorite). Never forget that Graphics and Processing power are what most gamers want. Also realize that if Microsoft really wanted to push HD-DVD they would have built in a player in the Elite 360's. In not doing so they leave themselves the ablility to sell an add on blu-ray player just like their add on HD-DVD player (and that came from a MS execs mouth not mine. In closing for those of you who want to watch all three lord of the rings movies and change a disc three or four times feel free, I'll pass. This is way to long and if you got through it thanks for taking the time to read it.

blu ray and hddvd are a rip off a) being too expensive b) full high def tv's are too expensive. you put the two together and most of us have to sell our arse to buy it. with dvd's, just get the player and its just fine with our traditional tv's. if you put blu ray and dvd movie playing on the same standard tv, there are not much different except if you have bug's eyes to notice the different. i don't know how all you pro blu ray people watch your movies but i like to watch it from a far. the pictures as sharp on dvd. but i heard you said bigger disc holds more data? its not the case, more resolutions more data ect. there's not much movies these days are released on two discs anyway. as usual, the second disc are always filled with craps and its not part of the movie. yes i do believed that dvds are going to be around for another 10 years. cd's was released in 1985... 2007= 22 years! and its still going strong. yes i can still buys music on cd, games on cd and blank cd's. all you people think blu ray is the next think, i say you should work for sony, i guess they are making huge $$$ with the blu ray thing ... er... blu ray= no way!

I honestly don't think HDDVD or BluRay will replace DVD in the next 2 to 3 years due to both formats being stupidly expensive to produce with blu ray being the most expensive, and that HDTVs and HD disc players aren't affordable to the average consumer. Add to the fact the the standard on PC is still CDRom, because whenever something is released on DVD on the PC medium (applications and games), it's considered a limited edition DVD release. So until the price of HDTVs comes down to the point where Joe Average can walk into a walmart and pick up a decent sized one (20-32 inches) without blowing an entire paycheck on one, I don't see HD Disc technology outside of the console realm catching on in the everyday market because there are cheaper options available, and joe average isn't looking to see every pimple on Brad Pitt's face for 30 bucks a movie, and 600+ dollars per player, and 449+ per TV set. So I see DVD sticking around as the dominant format for the next 3 years.

BigCrusha, I own a video company and to hear you , like many others, say that "nobody needs more content on disc" is a horrible misnomer. What people need to realize is that TV is changing. Today you typically have SD DVD and SD Television. So no most people don't uderstand HD or Blu-Ray. When tides change and TV is HD Fight Club won't look as good as it did when it first came out. Plus many people arguing about the storage capacity don't know anything about data rates, compression, or a host of other factors that do make a new, denser media necessary. Little boys buy toys. Companies make the world go round junior.

I don't hate Sony but Ithink they are making a horrible choice by sticking to Blu-ray: 1. Blu-ray discs cost companies a load of green to make 2. All Blu-rays are is bigger disc space but nobody needs more content on one disc. Sure better screen quality but that depends on the tv and player. 3. Most tech companies back HD-DVD and Blu-rays got Movie companies like warner bros. who probably won't have a say on the matter. Tech companies make Blu-ray discs for Movie companies. 4.People are familiar with the word "DVD". Probably more than half or consumers have no idea what Blu-ray is. You won't find many who will trash their dvd players for a bluray player that costs nearly a grand and still all ur getting is better disc capacity..... 5. A regular Blu-ray disc is around 50 gigs of space. All a company needs to do is make 2 hd dvd 30 gig discs which will cost much less to do and will be equal to 60 gigs. -My facts may not be straight but I'm sure they are accurate. What I'm trying to say is that sony can advertise bluray all they want, i just doubt bluray will beat or even replace dvd.

I feel sorry for Sony, ever since they lost trust of the consumer because of the root kit issue, the ps3 sales took major affect. Of course also because of bad games and lack of fun. Now to get back up on their feet, they try this....sigh.....

im not a sony hater by any means, but im really really disappointed with how PS3 is coming along, theres very few games coming out that i cant get for my 360 right now, but hey, this deal may get me to buy a PS3 sooner then i figured (since my summer job will pull in more then enough to buy one), but i dont think sony will be number 1, i think Wii will be 3rd, but Xbox right now has been more faithful (game wise) then sony has been so far...but i cant wait for when MGS and FF13 comes out, those will boost there sales a bit

Guess you missed that one.... ----------------------------- ski11buzz wow people can even complain about good news like this. -------------- People will complain about anything Sony does because they are a bunch of nasty little Sony haters. Not all the movies listed here are bad... If I had to choose 5, it would be easy: 1)Underworld Evolution 2)Kiss of the Dragon 3)Blazing Saddles 4)The Italian Job 5)Resident Evil: Apocalypse or The Transporter 2

This sounds better than free movies! from << LINK REMOVED >> The latest newsletter from Gamestop might have contained more information than they had initially planned or one of the staff members have gone mad and released Sony’s future plans for the PS3’s price reduction. Whiles we all know that the current price listing for 60GB PS3 in the US is $599.99 with the discontinued 20GB version been $499.99. However, the last newsletter from them have the ps3 listed as $399. Whiles Sony reps have said there wont be a price drop until 2009,Some have said otherwise as well. Sony said rumble “rumble” was lastgen but what are they doing now ? they are bringing it back(E3). You don’t believe US ? Click on inserted image to find out.

instead of 5 BRD movies y not to hella lower the price? cuz this movies cost20 to 30bucks 5BRD that will be like 100 to 150. $600(60GB HDD) - 150(5 Movies) = $450(totaly price of the PS3) man LOL that is the same price of the first PS2, in this kind of price I think more ppl buy a PS3 than PS3+5movies LOL.

There was a similar deal with the hd-dvd add on. At Best Buy if you bought the hd-dvd add on you would get 2 free movies of your choice plus King Kong that is inside the box. HD-DVD has had for over a month 5 free movies with their hd-dvd player.

One last thing VC-1 codec is used in many Blu-ray movies. It is nothing new and not exclusive to HD-DVD.

The ONLY reason why hd-dvd has more special features is because BD-J is not implemented and some studios favor hd-dvd. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SPACE! Blu-ray has MORE space than hd-dvd! It took me over 7 hours to download a movie in 720p on XBL! I highly doubt it will take anything away from the hi-def formats when not everyone has XBL, not everyone wants to wait forever for a download, people perfer physical media, and it is just a rental in the first place! Your spreading wrong information JoeSmith24!!!!!!!!!!

JoeSmith24 you are ridiculous. There is a huge difference between blu-ray and dvd quality. I own BOTH hd-dvd and blu-ray and the quality on BOTH ARE THE SAME! VC-1 is overhyped! You need to have experience before talking! By the way JoeSmith, HD-DVD and Blu-ray are doing better than VHS AND DVD when they first came out and they are competeing with each other. That says a lot! Downloading is not the future unless they find a way to keep the downloads from becoming so slow. It takes me over 7 hours to download a movie in hi-def on xbox live!
