Breath of Fire sets light to Euro VC

Three new titles for the Europeans this week, including Galaga '90 and Breath of Fire II.

It's Friday, which means it's almost the weekend. It also means that European Wii owners get their weekly Virtual Console updates. This week, there are three new games up for grabs, the first being the 1996 Super Nintendo Entertainment System title Breath of Fire II.

Breath of Fire II, the second title in the Japanese role-playing game series, was developed by Capcom. Players take on the role of Ryu, who soon gathers a group of allies on a mission to rescue his sister, with plenty of dragon-bashing along the way.

Galaga '90 is second on this week's list, not originally released in 1990 as suggested in the title, but 1989. The TurboGrafx-16 arcade shooter has gamers blasting their way through wave after wave of aliens to breach the enemy planet Galaga. Players plan their own route, picking up capsules, and opening new dimensions.

The final title for this week is Volleyball, a sports game of (surprise!) volleyball. There are eight male and female teams to choose from, and gamers can practice rounds and participate in international volleyball competitions.

Breath of Fire II is available for download for 800 Wii Points (approx £5.60), Galaga '90 for 600 Wii points (£4.20), and Volleyball for 500 Wii Points (£3.50).

Man, for once Europe is getting a sweeter deal than we are. We've got ActRaiser and Shining Force on the RPG front. So far only Sega's really putting them out here in the US. Where's all the awesome Super NES RPGS? Where's Breath of Fire? Where's Super Mario RPG? Where's Mana 3? Harvest Moon? Dragon Quest V-VI?

"I already have Breath of Fire II on my GBA, so try to find it on there if you live in the US like me. It's not that bad a game, but III is sooo much better. Too bad Sony has it in its claws . . ." That doesn't mean anything, Symphony of the night got released on the 360....

"How come the Europeans get all the cool games? I love the Breath of Fire series so much." I'd trade in all these "good" games for Chrono Trigger. It's such a shame it was never released here. Please Square, Nintendo. Release Chrono Trigger on the VC!

Too bad Breath of Fire only started to get REALLY good on Sony systems... III and IV were amazing, and really made you feel the "AARGH!! I'm a Dragon-man!" vibe. Never played V, unfortunately.

The Breath of Fire series never really sucked me in. I remember playing the first and second ones. The first one was ok, but the script in BoF2 was translated and localized very poorly. It's nearly Zero Wing quality at some points. To each their own. As for Galaga '90... between the Wii's VC and XBLA it seems like we're going to get every single version of every classic arcade game before we get some of the more unique console games.

Breath of Fire II is a tough game...I enjoyed it back in the day, but I don't really think I'd like to relive the frustration that the game gave me. Plus, I'd really hope that the translation is better now that the orginal one was.

xBlitzerx: SD cards can't be used in the way you're hoping... yet. Supposedly Shigeru Miyamoto said, in an interview a few months back, that they're looking into options for expanding the Wii's memory. The way it was stated suggests the possibility of either an update to allow SD/HDD usage (the latter IS a possibility through USB, considering the recent firmware update allowed USB keyboard usage in most channels EXCEPT the internet channel), or perhaps a peripheral provided by Nintendo or 3rd parties. Given the fact that they even included SD card compatibility to begin with, and Nintendo's recent disposition for making things user-friendly (ideally speaking), I'm betting there'll be a healthy dose of both.

Can you not save games to the SD memory card? I bought a 2GB in hopes that it could be like a HDD.

Just curious, but oh well... maybe one day. ------------------------- Probably because Nintendo (if they decide what gets released each week) doesn't want to flood the service with more games than they think are necessary each week. BoF2 is a great game but might be overshadowed if, say, the original Smash Bros. came out in the same week. In this sense it actually benefits the publisher too that their game only has to compete with two others in the initial week's offering. I'd suggest that Europe is seeing BoF2 first because the series has had more success there than in NA (hence the PSP port being released there but not in NA). That's just a bunch of guesstimates though....

Hope this comes to the North American VC. For some strange reason they didn't release BoF3 for the PSP here, yet did in Europe.

My internal ram is nearly full of quality VC games that i use. Im really hoping they release some sort of upgrade to allow more storage, instead of me facing having to nuke a lesser played title.

@ Kenerhai youll have to hope that sony puts them up on PSN then, since BoF III and BoF IV are both PSone games. Or you could be lucky enough like me and own the originals

One of the reasons that the SNES is the best system ever ;) is due in part to its great RPG's. BoF2 deserves to be one of those great RPG's to mention.

Yeah, I played Breath of Fire II on the SNES a while back and when I saw it for GBA about 2 years ago for £10, I couldn't miss it. Hope it's a good port to the Wii.

If i didn't have this on the SNES and the GBA version i would consider getting it but since i have it both those formats i'll have to pass when it comes out in the US but it is definately a fun great game i loved the BoF series that is until they made the PS2 (Dragon Quarter) one which i hated. Wish they would make a new one but do it with the old style rather than the new.

Breath of Fire 1 is frankly a pretty dull game. It's as bland as a jRPG can get. There's really nothing special about it, so there's not much loss in not having it available. BoF II though is much better. It still may be a little on the generic side, but it has a really good story and there's enough little cool customization features for the characters that makes it worth the download.

What about the 1st BoF game? Pretty unusual they would release a sequel before the original title. I'd like to try this one but sometime later since I'm still in the middle of Paper Mario. The US probably won't get it for another month or so anyway.

Woot! First comment. BoFII was a great game. I like how the series was different stories in the same "world" per se and forces that be always had a Ryu and a Nina. Very Zelda-esque
