BioWare's Anthem Is Multiplayer But Can Be Played Solo, Too

There will still be room for a single-player experience in Anthem.

BioWare is best known for its work on single-player games, although it does have some experience on the multiplayer side as well. With Anthem seemingly being designed as EA's answer to Destiny, multiplayer appears to be a big focus. But for those who are more interested in going about things on their own, the game will also be playable solo.

In the latest blog post from BioWare boss Casey Hudson, the company's updated mission statement is outlined: "We create worlds of adventure, conflict, and companionship that inspire you to become the hero of your story." Hudson emphasized the companionship part, as he says the company's games are meant to feature other characters on your adventures--whether those are AI- or human-controlled.

Now Playing: BioWare's Anthem Is Multiplayer, But You Can Still Play Solo - GS News Update

"However we design it, we always want to capture the special feeling of being on a journey with memorable companions," Hudson said. "I talked last time about Anthem being 'a story you can experience with friends.' There were, understandably, some questions and concerns about story in multiplayer. Specifically, 'What if I don't want to play with randos?' 'What if I don't have friends that I play games with?' And, 'I like to be the one making choices in my story--if it's multiplayer, won't the story get watered down?'"

Hudson attempted to dispel any concerns over this, admitting that they are things he worries about as a player as well. He called attention to the "become the hero of your story" aspect of BioWare's mission statement, saying that you as an individual should be creating a character and deciding what happens.

"I think the reason people are concerned about whether these things are possible in a multiplayer game is because it just hasn't been solved well before," he said. "With Anthem we're taking this problem head-on and structuring the entire game design to provide a specific solution for this."

Unfortunately, Hudson didn't actually explain just how this problem is being tackled. These details will be shared "very soon," but he said that you don't have to worry about being forced to engage in multiplayer.

"We think it creates a unique experience where you have control over your own story, but your story is set in an ever-changing multiplayer world," he said. "And yes, even though Anthem is meant to bring out the best parts of playing as part of an online community, you can choose to play through the story with only your friends, or even on your own.

"It's true--we're trying something really different here. Anthem represents one way to deliver innovation and new experiences in the spirit of our mission. We also have teams envisioning future BioWare games, and they're designing approaches that are different from Anthem--including one that's very Dragon Age. As we try new things, I hope that you'll come on the journey with us, and continue asking questions that will help shape Anthem into something we'll all love to play."

Just prior to E3 2018, EA will host its annual EA Play event. BioWare will share "lots more details" on Anthem there, presumably including more on what Hudson outlined in the blog post. We still know very little about the game, but its release is approaching quickly--after a delay that pushed it out of 2018, it's now due out by March 2019. EA also plans to have some kind of early access or beta test for the game, although specifics on that also remain unknown.

L4D2, TF2, Warhammer: End Times and a lot of other multiplayer games can be played solo, but they are all so horrible at it. This will be no different. Bioware is going to fail so hard with this game, yet again, as the studio is completely lost.

The closest thing that comes to mind is Guild Wars 2 which as an MMORPG.

You have the open-world and then you have your personal story quest which happens in an instanced area. You can have friends join for your personal quest or you can solo them (They are all solo-able).

Make no mistake, at its core Guild Wars 2 is an MMO and i bet Anthem is gonna be the same. Story happening in instanced area's while rest of the content in open-world MMO style.

Yep. Always online "live service" filled with microtransactions. Worthless to anyone who wants a good single player experience.

Sounds like EA to me! Bioware? Oh, that company that used to make good RPGs that got bought and killed by EA? Rest in peace.

Interesting, and if they can do it maybe it would be great and something new and exciting, but to me this sounds like this game will turn into a jack of all trades but master of none. The issue for me is you are combining two different type of gaming elements that appeal to different gamers that have to be done well to appeal those groups. I just don't see how you can create a single player game with a rich story and characters, but then also give it a full multiplayer/shared world aspect as well. Also don't forget this game will have some pay to play or live service model as that's is mandatory from EA so how does that affect if I just want to play in single player mode.

It's not that I'm saying multiplayer automatically makes the game bad, but Bioware has proven on many occasions they can't really do fast-paced action very well and their multiplayer coding is pretty awful (even BEFORE EA). I just can't see any reason to be excited about this game. With Borderlands 3 being leaked, nobody should be caring about Anthem (or Destiny for that matter) when the true king of this sub-genre is apparently around the corner.

Of course, I'd rather be wrong. That would mean Anthem ends up being a great game, but come on, this is EA we're talking about here...

And I don't know why tailoring a story to a player is such a difficult task in multiplayer. Just allow the player to play missions based on what decisions they make. Certain decisions create different branches in the story which lead to missions only available on that path. If you want to experience the other missions, you have to create another character and make different decisions or play with a friend who has unlocked those missions (and they can play with you in yours). Obviously not as good as a singleplayer game but still much better than the status quo.

@Barighm: DC universe does this. Depending on you're mentor and choice of villain or hero, you get very different experiences. The problem is almost all late game content requires a group. I know it's an mmo, but the beginning of the game can be almost entirely done solo and was more fun imo.

I'm holding my judgements until the game is out, and I knew it was going to be multiplayer, but I was really hoping they were coming out with a strong, single-player sci-fi experience to make up for Mass Effect essentially dying.

ME: Andromeda was fun, don't get me wrong, but it ended the series as far as I am concerned.

It'd be nice if they get it right, though. I hope they get it right.

Somewhere between the fun of Borderlands and the production values of Destiny, maybe. Both those games are boring to me, however, hope Anthem is exciting.

The way they're very carefully wording things indicates that it's clearly going to be "always online" even by yourself. They played this game with Garden Warfare 2 as well. They know some people are bound to be annoyed, hence the careful phrasing. The best way to not piss anyone off would be to let them use it offline or online. I know some jerk is going to be all "well it's not for you then" or "get over it", but I just can't tolerate buying a game with an expiry date (when the servers shut down) when that approach is unnecessary. I accept it when there's no way around it, but forcing it upon things that don't need it sucks. Remember the SimCity (2013) launch and the Xbox One reveal?

@VAJoiner: I think they said something about an offline mode, but these articles have been loaded with political speak, so I wouldn't trust this offline mode to be a true offline mode. More likely a training area, or perhaps there is a tutorial mission that works offline.

Now here's a wild guess: "your story" only refers to which of the available dialogue options you've picked most throughout the game to express yourself. So if you've mainly picked the sarcastic option then that's "your individual story". At this point I don't expect any more meaningful choices in a Bioware game, and their new game is focussed on coop.

The comparison to Destiny will probably be rather close. And I have no idea how they want to add meaningful companions when those companions will probably get switched out if another player joins.

@Atzenkiller: If you've been paying attention, they said extremely similar things about The Old Republic, about how you'd be "crafting your story" and other such nonsense. Said storylines were decent, but ultimately pointless to the world and effected nothing. They couldn't after all. It's a multiplayer MMO. Same will happen again here.

Here's the thing, I'm already balls deep in warframe(which is a problem for anthem in itself), and though I love it and have dropped nearly 650 hours in it so far, I would never pay to buy it, let alone pay 60 bucks. That and the fact that anthem is not a game I would like to see from bioware, and for the love of god, I couldn't trust EA not to somehow screw it.

The run-up to release, with the schedule push-back to March and now the assurances issuing forth from Casey gives me deja-vu (all over again) of the path that ME3 took.

To be fair, I enjoyed that game thoroughly (except the last few minutes, thank God for the MEM mod) so I'm willing to wait this out and see what's actually delivered.

They (BioWare) may surprise us and I sincerely hope so. We'll see...

@Alucard_Prime: Lol all people have seen so far of this game is like a 5 minute trailer/gameplay at E3 a year ago, and they somehow think they KNOW this game is going to suck.

You are right. Gamers become more hateful and volatile every day. Instead of waiting to see how the game develops, they just instantly hate it, and then go cry about it on every forum post. And then probably end up buying it anyway.

Or... or... and hear me out on this one:

There's a mode called NoPlay.

This version has tons of other games built-in via micro-transactions. The only drawback is Anthem becomes unplayable, but the benefits of this mode make it instantly more desirable than the vanilla mode.

"become the hero of your story" it's the kind of forgiving line you post in a game where you try to save the fact that will let the storytelling be done by glossary in a wikia, a static text in a loading screen, or just briefring screens that will be jumped/skipped by the action hungry average multiplayer joe. Face it, even if the execution turns out into a profitable, working game, it will be like trying to get wowed by little to no exposition and cool current time graphics, just as the underwhelming experiene of playing The Division, on your won or with company.

no way am i pre-ordering.. but i'll reserve judgement on the game until it actually comes out.

the one criticism i would give though.. stop being so cryptic.. it seems to be a staple of theirs over the last few years.. and look where its gotten them.. they went from "pre-order the day its available " to "ill think about it."

Can people just wait for the game to launch and try it before you form an opinion about how awful it will be? Seriously....

Bioware had like 2 lower rated games than expected out of like 10 and people jump all over how awful they are as a game studio. I would certainly never want to be in any kind of work project or real life scenario with you guys. The moment I make one mistake, which will happen because I'm human, you guys would grab your pitchforks. Its crazy, just because Bioware had a rough patch with a few less then stellar games does not mean that they are incapable of putting out a good game! You guys act like if you ever made games every title would be crapped out as pure gold. Sheesh.

@darkhunterix: What you fail to realize is that people who made your favorite Bioware games have left the company and the people who have made the new crap are new to the company.

You think Visercal employed the same people that made Dead Space? Hell no. Those guys made that game and 90% moved on to other studios and projects. Game designers are mercs mostly.

That's why people are slamming Bioware. It's not the studio with the same people. I know Casey Hudson is the mass effect OG but he is only one man. People are right to be worried. It's Destiny in third person. But Destiny and it's sequel suck. That's the essence of multiplayer in general: You have fun goofing off with your friends, not enjoying a deep story.

@nikolistary: I get what you are saying, but bioware was formed in 1995 and the company is 23 years old. Expecting any company to have the same employees across its entirety is really ludicrous. Game companies contract out and hire developers for each individual project that they do. I guarantee that you can pull up the staff list for each bioware game and it will be a complete mix up of developers, programmers, art designers, etc. for every game they have ever made. The only real consistent will be the director or lead in most cases, who spreads his vision to the employees that are working the project at the time. As such, Casey Hudson being there IS A BIG DEAL for keeping the entire development ship on the right track and I can completely guarantee you he was the one that made the call to push the game out to make sure that it meets the quality that people expect of a bioware game.

All that I am saying is give the team and the director the chance to deliver before we all jump in comments everyday saying anthem sucks. Trust me, there is no one waiting and anticipating anthem more because every bioware game I have ever played I have liked or loved, including Andromeda. As such, if Anthem is a completely awful game I will be right here with you complaining about how awful it is. Complaining before the game even launches though is just so terrible, but I get it.... people are entitled to their opinions I just wanted to share mine as well.

Just a story here but I was a huge supporter of Destiny 2 and its vision, I didn't really knock on comments much I bought it, enjoyed it, then saw all of its flaws and I was right here with everyone (as well as polygon) knocking on how it fell short. I feel like, however, Anthem could be the game that shows up Destiny and shows Bungie that they never had to do some of the shady things they did in the first place. It would be nice to have Destiny get called out for being a lesser game for once so that maybe Destiny will have some competition and not gouge us in future updates or titles. That is why I am a huge supporter of Anthem until I see otherwise.
