Big in Japan May 10-16: Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2, FIFA World Cup

Little change in the charts as Square Enix spin-off, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, and New Super Mario control the podium; EA soccer sim sneaks in at bottom of the top 10.

For the third straight week, Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 for the DS was the best-selling game in Japan. And for the third straight week, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker for the PSP was a distant second.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 makes it three-of-a-kind with a third straight week atop the charts.
Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 makes it three-of-a-kind with a third straight week atop the charts.

Media Create today released its Japanese sales charts for the week of May 10-16, showing very little turnover in the ranks. There were no changes in the top four games, with the two portable hits followed by Nintendo's evergreen New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Tomodachi Collection for the DS in third and fourth, respectively.

There were only a pair of new releases to make the week's top 10. Idea Factory's Hakuouki: Yuugi Roku was the better selling of the two, reaching fifth place on the charts. The game lets players take control of swordsmen in feudal Japan, alternately keeping the peace through combat and performing menial daily tasks in an assortment of minigames. The only other new release to chart was Electronic Arts' PlayStation 3 edition of 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa, which made the 10 spot with just over 10,000 copies sold.

It was a difficult week for hardware sales, as every system sold fewer units than it did the week prior. The PS3 made up some ground relative to the competition, as it leapfrogged the DSi LL and Wii to return to second place. While the PSP maintained its position atop the hardware charts, its digital distribution-driven counterpart the PSP Go had a particularly trying week, selling just 871 systems.

PSP Go shows that people aren't willing to go for purely downloadable games. Which is good, I like having a box to put next to my other games boxes. Its like a collection for me :)

@Rahnyc4 I agree. The DS may end up being the best selling game system of all time in any country. It's sold almost as many units in America as PS2 did - in half the time! And its games have a really good cost-to-value ratio. Couple that with it being portable, and you've got a winning formula. The DS is the ONLY game system this (7th) gen that I own and intend to keep.

RealHarry the nintendo ds has sold 30 million units in its existence in japan. keep in mind the ps 2 have sold 21 million unites in its existence. the psp has sold about 13million units. you seriously think the psp appeal more than the ds? the ds is now the best selling video game machine in japan of all time.

Seems like the Japanese gamers are finally buying some PSP games and not just the PSP console. We should hopefully get more decent PSP software released now that its homebase have finally decided to support and improve on the PSP's currently under-nourished 'games' catalog.

@Halloll Tomodachi means 'friend' in Japanese, so it's probably some Sims crap ^^.

That Dragon Quest title sure is selling like hot cakes. However, do notice that it is a DS game, whereas Peace Walker is a PSP one. Looking at sales records of handhelds, there are far << LINK REMOVED >> in Japan than there are << LINK REMOVED >>. Hence, Dragon Quest would probably be enjoying a more tremendous base of potential customers.
