Bible coming to 360, 'We Pray' actually viral ad

[UPDATE] Publishing house announces it is bringing holy book to consoles; controversial Catholic mass simulator actually PR gimmick for Dante's Inferno.

Christian gamers soon won't have to choose between setting down their Xbox 360 controller and picking up a Bible. Next month, the B&H Publishing Group will introduce an application via Xbox Live's Indie Games store, which will let gamers download the Bible in its entirety onto their consoles.

Titled Bible Navigator X, the application will feature the Holman Christian Standard Bible version of the holy book and will feature search and bookmarking functionality. The 400 Microsoft point ($5) application will also present the text via 10 different themes players can choose from.

While the Bible Navigator X is a serious application, a product that appears to parody religion in games surfaced today. A press release sent out to game outlets claims a company called Prayer Works Interactive is working on a Christian-themed game called Mass: We Pray. A video accompanying the release shows a family using the game's motion-sensing cross controllers and pressure sensitive "kneeler" peripheral to simulate a variety of activities. For performing such activities as anointing the sick and genuflecting, players will collect "grace points" to unlock "holy mysteries" and advance pew-by-pew to the front of a simulated church.

We Pray ended up being a viral marketing gimmick.
We Pray ended up being a viral marketing gimmick.

But while Christian-themed games do exist (see Left Behind), there are numerous reasons to think Mass: We Pray is a well-produced prank. Though the trailer bears the official ESRB logo, the Wii is not mentioned by name--nor is any other console, for that matter. Both the cross controller, complete with rosary wrist strap, and kneeler look laughably fake, and the actors in the video appear to constantly be on the verge of cracking up. (Also, the prospect of a transubstantiation minigame is both ludicrous and blasphemous.) Most damning, though, is the fact neither the press release nor the official Web site for the game offer any contact information for the company--information that is de rigueur in legitimate press releases.

[UPDATE] As can now be seen on the Mass: We Pray Web site, the project is, in fact, a viral marketing gimmick. The site now scolds users of committing the sin of heresy and then asks them to watch a trailer for the forthcoming biblical-horror game, Dante's Inferno. The game's publisher, Electronic Arts, used a similarly borderline blasphemous tactic at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in June, when it had PR reps and actors pose as outraged Christians protesting the game.

Alex09 Evolution is a theory, written by a man, from what I have heard science was beginning to discredit evolution, it's never been proven, that's why it's still a theory. From what I have heard, there's never been irrefutable evidence to prove that man wasn't created in six days. Why do they need to be mocked? Because they don't believe like you do? So what? For so many hundreds of years many people believed the earth was flat? Popular opinion don't make things true. In fact, anyone who believed that the world was round ended up being right. In the first place, the bible was not printed in 2008, it was first printed in the 17th century. In fact, if you knew anything about the bible, you would also know that people have died to bring it into it's written form. The bible wasn't just made in a day. It was printed on the crimson blood and burning ashes of the men and women who believed in it enough to die for it! Show me one person that would die for evolution. What bible are you reading? Spare me the dribbling propaganda! The bible has never forced anyone to change their minds. People did it of their own accord. The bible has never stopped being about God, the only thing that has changed is man.

People, the real question we need to ask is how sad is your family? To get this...thing...instead of going to Church to do all that or just get a normal game (hint hint Dante's Inferno)?

Me and Jesus were chilling last night. He said he owed his friend Jose some money, and he had to go back over something called Rio... I don't know, he was tripping... I worship the Sun because it is real. Jesus stole my sandwich... :(

@Everybody You there is no way to prove that God(the one in the Bible) does exist but you never searched for him. You will try to find everyway to prove him wrong but no right.I used to be just like you. Let me ask some of you did u ever try kneeling down and asking Jesus Christ for forgiveness with all you heart and for him to lead you on the right path. Before you can say your right try admitting that your wrong to him.

@amill68 I have evidence. I was healed by Jesus because I ask him in his name and he healed me. You want proof go to a Benny Hinn crusade or watch it on Youtube. I been healed and seen people get healed out of Jesus's name. You never believed in Christianity because you dont want to believe. If want to know if their is a God try seeking Jesus because he lead me to God.

LOL still spreading that bunk about the Bible contradicting itself? "OMG It says do not answer the fool according to his folly, but then the very next verse says ANSWER the fool according to his folly! I've proven the Bible contradictory! Religion is over!" The Bible is pretty unique in its historicity and coherency, and millennia of study haven't eroded its considerable popularity.

and by the way, i don't think that the people who are against stem cell research are necessarilyall devout religious people, i think that many of them are people who do not fully understand the concept, so they believe what they hear from the more vocal parts of opur society and media, which happen to be religous. the key here is education about the subjects, not rejecting people's belief system.

to address you last argument: "I wouldn't prove them right by saying, "I can believe whatever I want because I have the freedom to do so!" and leave it at that. Somehow you think that is okay?" I believe that people should have their own reasons for following hte faith that they follow, but those reasons are their own. If they do not want to share them with other people, then so be it. also, i can guarantee that there are things in your life which seem to "just feel right" to you, and you cannot quite explain why that is. (and don't even try to say that you don't have any of those). by your logic, those feelings are stupid and we should all be calling you names for feeling that way. that logic does not make a whole lot of sense to me. just my opinion, though

i happen to have an extremely strong scientific background, so i thoroughly understand the principles involved in this discussion (likely to more of an extent than 90% of the people on this website, but that's beside the point). i'm not arguing your right to disagree with people who have strong faith, or even to argue your side. hell, i recommend that everyone argue their point, i think that it only makes the person's belief sets even stronger because it brings out the flaws in their logic. what i do have a problem with is the name calling and personal attack against those who do consider themselves religious. "Anybody who thinks Christianity is right and other religions are wrong, or vice versa, is a complete tool who has no evidence to back up such a claim(although evidence is basically non-existent in all religions). So Christians who are offended by this better look in the mirror and reminisce on all of the times they have mocked another religion, whether it was Islam or witchcraft."

@amill68 And for the record, it very much does infringe on your lifestyle and mine. Do you know why Bush didn't approve stem cell research? Because religious organizations who were in his pocket were against it. Do you know how much that research can help people? What about having the right to die? Didn't you just state that nobody has the right to infringe on somebody else's lifestyle if it makes them happy? So why are religious organizations rallying against mercy killings when the victim has nothing left but pain and wants to leave and those organizations are in no way involved? As far as I can see, this kind of lifestyle does infringe on our lives. I'm not attacking Christians, I'm attacking those who believe every word in the bible, and think that they must enforce it's rules personally.

@amill68 Did I say wrong? And you're a thinking, rational person(hopefully). You have every right to argue anything you want, and you especially do if you have science in your corner. There are thousands who would say that for me to even have faith is pathetic, and I would argue with them, but I wouldn't prove them right by saying, "I can believe whatever I want because I have the freedom to do so!" and leave it at that. Somehow you think that is okay?

wow... i have to agree with shockner. who am i or anyone else to say that someone's beliefs are wrong? if that belief system is what allows the person to live a happy and fulfilling life (that doesn't infringe upon my lifestyle), I don't care how much I disagree with it, its not my place to tell them differently

@isthanametken33 Look up "Contradictions in the Bible". I can't stand arguing about religion, and I'm not an atheist just so you know, but seriously half of the people in North America don't even believe in evolution. I mean, it's been proven, every single scientist who's taken seriously backs it, but still billions of people question if it's valid science and millions simply believe we were created day by day. Christians that believe such things deserve to be mocked, and hopefully you aren't one of them but if so you really need to think some things through. And I just looked at one of your older posts, you actually say "believe in the bible"... You do realize that God is the subject in the bible. And that he is the one you are supposed to believe in. Some leather bound book printed in 2008 and horribly misquoted/mistranslated and edited is not even slightly related to the original bible written by the gospels. And they were trying to spread the word of God, not start a money making organization that takes advantage of people with faith. I have faith, and I see you do too, but at some point in history the bible stopped focussing on God and started to be focussed on forcefully changing people's beliefs. I'm not trying to start some new age religion, but organized religion, and devout, literal belief in the bible is very bad for the planet.

The truth about religion is 99 per cent of those who believe(regardless of religion) only do so because their parents did before them, and pushed them into the churches, synagogues, mosques every sunday. The sad truth is the only people who could read and write in biblical times(hell even in Medieval times) were educated nobility who had every single reason to betray the commoners for their own benefit. Anybody who thinks Christianity is right and other religions are wrong, or vice versa, is a complete tool who has no evidence to back up such a claim(although evidence is basically non-existent in all religions). So Christians who are offended by this better look in the mirror and reminisce on all of the times they have mocked another religion, whether it was Islam or witchcraft.

I am always amazed. But I guess if you live in a digital world you will encounter it all. Correct me if I am wrong, but was Dante not a dissident of the church? Did Copernicus not write that the earth was not the center of it all and Darwin did explain evolution? So, if religion is just a relationship to a "higher power" does that explain why we have fanboys and trolls? But in all reality, why not offer everything and anything for a price. I always get a kick out of seeing Buddha idols with a price tag on it.

It seems like EA is trying to pick a fight with the Church in order to stir up controversy and sell games. The Church isn't biting, so EA looks foolish. Is the game so bad that it can't sell on its own merits?

Whether the old testament is archaic or not doesn't negate the factor that the bible doesn't contradict itself. As I said before, anybody that says that either has not read the bible correctly, or misread something in the bible. Nowhere does the bible condone stealing, human sacrifice, or slavery.

What do you mean poorly cited? Those verse say exactly what the bible says. You stated that the bible condoned murder, human sacrifice, and stealing. I fail to see how this is true. (Exodus 20:13) plainly states not to murder. (Matt 5:17) reinforces that. No place in the bible do I find anything condoning murder, so I fail to see a contradiction. In Duet 13:18 the bible says that no where in Israel was there to be found someone sacrificing a human, still no contradiction. On the part about pharaoh I may have been mistaken, because pharaoh didn't ask the Israelites to take the gold, after reading Exodus 12:35-36 I found, it says that the Israelites asked the Egyptians, God gave them favor, and the Egyptians gave the children of Israel gold. Still I do not see a contradiction. How did they steal something if it was given to them. The point I am trying to make is that the bible doesn't contradict itself.

The real issue with religious debate is that EVERYONE wants to give an opinion, regardless of how little they may actually know. Anyway, props to those of you who've been reasonable and treated the subject with some respect. For the rest of you, show some respect. Regardless of what you believe/don't believe, there are those of us for whom the Christian faith is the most meaningful and powerful element in our lives, and you're not doing your own worldview any favors by being derisive.

@Dahmd I looked up most of your passages where they contradict and you couldn't really be further from the truth man. First of all, more than half of those passages you wrote down had nothing to do with anything you said they were. The stealing bit? It said go and ASK your neighbors and they will GIVE you silver and clothing for your daughters and sons etc, as for condoning slavery I have yet to really see the proof but at the same time I feel like you're reading old testament and on the other the overall tone and theme of the book is for good. I really feel its like watching a movie and because somebody kills somebody that means they must condone killing when clearly that's not what the film was intended for. Same thing with your misinterpretations of the Bible, just because somebody in the stories did some horrible things, never meant once that the book supported that. Also, you can't really read old testament b/c it is archaic according to it's followers and the god. I really don't know why so many people gave me thumbs down and barley gave a reason why they hated my comment. I even reinforced the fact that I'm not really religious though I do show some respect for religion and an agnostic type attitude. For everything god stands for may he be real or not dahmd, he would never have wanted that to happen to that girl and that is a really twisted way of looking at it after giving me those very poor cited passages you gave me.
