Battlefield Boss Says PS5 Pro Price "Makes Sense" Even If It's Expensive

Vince Zampella said that he understands the $700 asking price of the PS5 Pro, even though he wishes it would be cheaper.

The high price point of PlayStation's PS5 Pro has been a hot topic and EA's Vince Zampella has weighed in, offering a more middle of the road take on the console. Zampella said that he thinks the price is "actually not that bad" when compared to other options, although he recognized that it's still expensive for many people.

In an interview with IGN discussing the future of Battlefield, including a return to a modern setting, the Head of Respawn and Group GM for EA Studios Organization said--that when adjusted for inflation--the PS5 Pro isn't priced that much higher than some previous consoles and that it offers better performance than building a PC for the same cost. That said, Zampella recognized that the asking price is higher than many people would like.

Now Playing: PS5 Pro Everything To Know

"So I mean, it's a balance. Is it expensive for people? Absolutely. Not everybody will be able to afford it," Zampella said. "Would it be better if it was cheaper? Sure. I want more people to have it. But it makes sense, really."

As for what the PS5 Pro means for the next entry in the Battlefield series, Zampella said the team will need to wait and see. He continued on, saying that the overall adoption rate will affect what the team can do. In addition, since the next Battlefield will still have to run on the base PS5, the team will only be looking at what they can "plus up" for PS5 Pro owners.

EA hasn't announced when fans can expect the next Battlefield game, but the PS5 Pro release is just around the corner. While the $700 price has turned many away, anyone looking to play PS5 games at the best possible quality might still want to pick it up.

Way to find the one guy on the planet who thinks the price is fine and write an entire article about it. How about an article for every random person working in the gaming industry who thinks the price is ridiculous? They say this is for enthusiasts. I've always felt as an enthusiast that it's nice to have physical copies of special edition boxed set games and such. So this is more of a kick in the head to enthusiasts imo by making it seem like they're exploiting them by asking a $1000CAD before taxes for a console and then expecting them to pay more for the disc drive and even more for the stand.

$959.99CAD + $99.99CAD for the optical drive + $39.99CAD for the stand + 13% sales tax = $1,242.96. That's a lot of discretionary income to kick out for a console that one would assume many people already owns the original console because who doesn't buy a standard PS5 and then far into the lifecycle of the current generation spends $1,242.96 on a PS5 Pro? I guess they did the projections and thought it was going to sell well enough to be worth making but damn, that is a lot of money for a closed gaming system.

We don't really know the production costs. That's a factor. They know they won't make more money with a higher price if far fewer people are willing to pay it, but I don't think they did themselves any favors by leaving out the optical drive. How many people own physical PS4 or PS5 games? For them, it's a necessary feature.

Maybe it would make sense if it was a PC, but it's not. It has the drawbacks of being a console (walled garden, paid online), without the benefits (disc drive & physical media), unless you add another $80. On top of that, the console will be bottlenecked by its CPU, making it a mostly pointless upgrade.

A $700 console could only make sense as a luxurious product, but the value isn't there for this one. It's a console that you have to assemble yourself by buying the disc drive separately; it's the opposite of luxurious experience.

@Tiwill44: It is far cheaper than getting a PC. What did you mean walled garden? I rather pay a bit than to be in a place runned rampart with cheaters. PC people don't even use physical, no PS5 Pro we will see a big upgrade (watch the DF breakdown) it is still tremendous value

@teddytabs: I can't tell you that you're wrong, because it's your money. I can only explain why I don't agree.

First, the cheater argument has some merit, but the only games in which cheaters are a problem are games I'd want to play with keyboard & mouse, so I wouldn't want to play them on console anyway.

Second, I really don't like AI upscaling and temporal AA. On PC, I can usually turn those things off, because it's not a walled garden. On both PS5 and Pro, the final image looks blurry. It's just slightly less blurry on Pro, but it still is blurry. There is a loss of detail across the entire screen when you use these technologies. At least with base PS5, it's better value per blurry pixel. PS5 Pro won't turn 30 FPS locked games into 60 FPS games, it just makes existing 60 FPS games a bit less blurry. It's not worth it to me, if I want a true non-blurry image I can only achieve that on PC.

Third, the only two reasons I would want to play on console are for the exclusives and for physical media. This gen, both PS and Xbox have had almost zero exclusives, and now PS is trying to eliminate the disc drive on their most powerful console. I don't want to support that.

@Tiwill44: I can see your point for the Ai upscaling stuff but I do think as they improve with the technology it'll become better. I can list a ton of exclusives on Playstations side that has been amazing, as for Xbox its been dead this gen and last gen (although did show some interesting stuff in their showcase). With the physical stuff, I don't see it that way, I think Playstation was just trying to cut a bit of costs, since people mostly buy digital it would make sense but as long as people demand for physical I don't see them getting rid of it for now. Let me know if you want me to list all the exclusives though because it is a lot (more than PS4 in the same time span)

@teddytabs: PS4 had Bloodborne and Gravity Rush 2, oh and The Last Guardian. PS5 has a remake of Demon's Souls and Astro Bot. Neither were enough for me, I miss the days when PS had more exclusives than you could count. I'm talking games that only came out on PS and nothing else. And the variety that came with that abundance. They weren't just variations of The Last of Us or open-world (not very fond of either genre).

I can't really trust that the PS6 will have a disc drive yet, even though they said it would have BC, that could mean digital BC if you connect your account. I prefer to wait and see.

@Tiwill44: Oh because I would have said Helldivers 2 since I can't list the PC ones. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth (Goty contender), Spider-Man 2, Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin and you did mention Astro Bot although it's not to your taste it is a Goty contender again. I feel like they've really ramped up on the games this year though

@teddytabs: Yeah, all of those are either on PC already or on their way. I mean, they said even Astro Bot might come to PC, even though it really shouldn't. I get that they can make more money by releasing them on PC but it really devalues the console because I can just wait if I want a game.

@Tiwill44: But the thing is Playstation is still the ones making the games and now they've decided that Multiplayer games will release on PS and PC at the same time. Single player games could take years for it to release on PC, I do hope this decision is reversed. No one is really going to wait for GTA6 to release on PC, for sure though

@teddytabs: I'd like to add something, to clarify my perspective. By default, I'm always going to own a PC. So there's never going to be a situation where I get rid of my PC to own a console instead. In other words, if a console is not good value to me, I'm more than willing to upgrade my PC instead, and wait for games to come to it. But if a console is worth buying, then I'm happy to buy it, if it can complement my PC.

With that in mind, I can understand the perspective of someone who happens to be in the opposite situation. Someone who owns consoles by default, instead of a PC.

Now, even in that situation, I think there is more value to buying a different console (Switch or Xbox) to complement your base PS5, than there is to trading in a base PS5 for a Pro for $430 ($350 + disc drive).

But, let's say you already have all the consoles this gen and have no interest in PC. Or maybe you only want to play on PlayStation for some reason. Then, yeah, the PS5 Pro may seem like better value from that perspective. Someone who always wants the most powerful consoles no matter what, will be happy to upgrade. I don't think a lot of people are like that, though.
