Battlefield 1: How Weather and Destruction Change the Game

The art of destruction.

The plan seemed foolproof: we would hold out in the church atop the hill on the Eastern side of the map while the rest of our team fought in the village below. We had two squads covering the hillside and the field leading up to it. I was one of three scouts with sniper rifles picking off any enemies bold enough to cross the pockmarked field. There were five minutes left, we had the control point, and had nearly won. But then the fog rolled in, and our plan fell apart.

Battlefield 1’s dynamic weather lends unpredictability to its setting--even when I thought I had the map figured out, and the key sight lines covered, and the right choke points defended, I wasn’t ready for the massive wall of vapor that rolled over the landscape. Suddenly, my sniper rifle was useless: the enemy team took the chance to cross the field, climb the hill, and rush the church with trench shotguns and bayonets ready. They took the control point and held out for the remainder of the skirmish.

The fog of Northern France may be ephemeral, but it forced me to have a Plan B at all times during a recent demo at E3 2016. Massive towns with sprawling farmland became close-quarters battles at a moment’s notice. Developer DICE has yet to confirm any effects besides the fog, but I can only imagine the blizzards and sandstorms we might see in the game’s World War I settings in the Alps and deserts farther South.

The demo’s destructive environments added another layer of flexibility to multiplayer matches. Buildings crumbled and new sight lines replaced them. Brick walls shattered like glass as tanks drove through them. Artillery strikes created craters useful for cover as I sprinted back across that same field in a vain attempt to retake the church. The map I began on was a far cry from the one I left behind, and I could see the ruins we created, and used to our advantage, as the timer ticked to zero.

I played one match, but it felt like three: the San Quentin Scar, as DICE calls it, began with ample space for me to cover through the scope of my rifle. But the fog transformed it into a massive close-quarters battle. And when I realized how crucial destroying cover was, and subsequently creating it with craters and moving tanks, I leaned more toward a vehicle-based approach. The locale itself dictated how I played.

DICE still hasn’t clarified how often the weather effects will occur: whatever algorithm that controls their frequency is unclear. And I’ve only spent an hour in the maps included with the full game, so I can’t say whether this unpredictability will become rote as I play more of the multiplayer shooter. But I can say that, from my brief time with the game, I came away excited for what feels like a return to form for the series. The dynamism of these environments is as important as the weapon you choose, the vehicle you drive, and the soldier you take into battle. The moniker “Battlefield” just might be apt again.

My hype for this game decreased a long way.

A First War game, fast paced, with automatic weapons and without the most important armys. Not mentioning the DLCs.

Whata bummer!!!!

@jguilherme: Not having France and Russia included is a travesty considering USA was only in for the final year of WW1. European armies should always have been included ahead of America although omitting USA also have been a glaring mistake.

What this all comes down to is Dice/EA's sales demographic. They are catering to the USA gamers and almost twisting a major piece of history due to some big cheese telling them what will sell the game.

This is what modern games need! I love how Battlefield is evolving independently of other titles. Where COD went futuristic and added mobility with Titanfall and the mediocre Advanced Warfare and BO3, DICE is making their game even more of a dynamic sandbox. More unique games can only be a good thing.

Just be prepared for EA to milk the s*** of it with majority of the content locked behind their season pass. Even a core part of the experience like the French army is locked behind it, which is absurd in so many levels, especially when US who played very little role is in the game.

@Gamer_4_Fun: For starters, this isn't the first game/franchise to have paid DLC. I will agree that holding a key player in the war (French) behind a pay-wall is wrong. But what does the US have to do with anything? The beta was the German Empire and the British.

Lastly, you may want to brush up on your history before you make vague statements. A very little role? The US declared war on the German Empire in 1917. They also were the major pipeline of supplies and money to the allies (British). Most historians agree that had the US not entered the war, the German Empire could have won and the world would have faced a worse threat than the Nazi's in WW2.

@Gamer_4_Fun: i hope you are wrong. I think EA did a fantastic job with the content on BF4. The core game was loaded with content then the season pass added content for two solid years. BF4 was one of the very few season passes i found to be well worth the full price.

@ArabrockermanX: you guys gotta drop this "EA is an evil corporation!" Thing. You guys act like EA is the only one trying to make money. They still produce some of the best games around.

@xcrimsonxsynx: hi :)

yeah, wind is already present in bf4, storms break out on some maps and trees clearly blowing in the wind on others.

It could blow the fog across maps.

I'm still annoyed but the fact bolt actions are scout exclusive weapons

It makes no sense in a war where bolt actions are the primary weapons

Luckily, Verdun is coming Aug 30th to the PS4 so I'll be getting that for authenticity and BF1 for a more arcade approach

@nurnberg: I hear the French army will be like the Spectres and grunts in Titanfall. You shoot them while they're running away for points.

I have high hopes for the destruction in this game, can't wait for the beta to see how this all plays out.

Glad that snipers are at a disadvantage. I feel they are the cowards of the battlefield. A lot of times when I play BF4 and the game is ruined by snipers parachuting on to buildings where they plant beacons that are unreachable just to take pot shots of others in the heat of battle.

the destruction has improved. even on high end pc's Battlefield 1 E3 demo in its alpha stage is still unique. when i was in the tank i destroyed 2 corners of the wall from the church leaving the enemy to run & hide.

my only issue is that we were limited to the controls. i wanted to customize my control settings for both keyboard & mouse & the x1 controller but since its still in alpha we werent able to but i talked to someone from Dice & reccomend control customization

@senorbusyman: I'm curious how the consoles will stack up. Looking at BF4, the graphics were virtually the same on all platforms.
