Baldur's Gate III Devs Open Up About Stadia Exclusivity, Suggest Game Wouldn't Run On PS4/Xbox One

Baldur's Gate III will release in Early Access on Stadia, too.

Baldur's Gate III has been unveiled, featuring a turn-based combat system and some powerful cinematics. Now, with the game being shown at PAX East, more information is coming to light about the game as outlets talk to the creative forces behind it. One that that has come up a few times is the fact that the game is skipping PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but will be available for Google Stadia.

Talking to Eurogamer, design producer David Walgrave says that he isn't convinced the game would run efficiently on the other consoles. "I don't think that current-gen consoles would be able to run it," Walgrave says. "There's a lot of technical upgrades and updates that we did to our engine, and I don't know if it would be capable of being able to actually run on those things."

He concedes that it might work if they tweaked the textures, but "It wouldn't look as cool anymore." He also says that the game will come to PC and Stadia simultaneously in early access; although Stadia does not have an official term for Early Access as of yet, he says that it will largely be the same as it is on PC.

Meanwhile, speaking to USGamer, Walgrave has spoken further on working with the Stadia platform. "We know where they're going, we know what to implement with their API, so we just implement that," he told the site. He says that the team "follow(s) the news" and is aware that not everyone loves the system, but that's okay--""We also think that there are certain features that we're building thanks to Stadia."

For more on the game, check out GameSpot's own interview with Larian creative director Swen Wincke about how the game will continue on the series' legacy.

The game doesn’t even look good. Unimpressed by the graphics and the turn based combat looks extremely dull. When the game sells like crap on Stadia, they’ll come crawling back to Sony and Microsoft.

@leonfreeman: They'll probably port it to the consoles the same as they did Original Sin. I don't think they're banking on big Stadia sales, I think they're banking on big PC sales, because that's where Divinity and Baldur's Gate all live.

Really hate it when developers/publishers straight up lie to us.

It won't run on current consoles.

Have you tried to run it on current consoles?

No.

So does that mean only people with brand new $500 GPU's can run this on PC because apparently there won't be any scaling to older hardware?

Shut up.

@bdrtfm: Umm yeah considering a to-date 500$ GPU could be a high-end tier card it probably can't, especially if the other hardware is up to date. Also the idea of scaling doesn't necessarily exist for a PC. If you own a low-end card like a 1050 or RX 480 (a rough albeit pointless comparison to current best consoles) you are going to suffer heavily even on games released a while ago especially if you want 60fps/1080p at max settings (fyi you won't get anywhere close with these cards). Not to mention PCs don't run on a low-level API they take significantly more power from your hardware which consoles can't afford with their compactness. Considering we have no idea what the engine's requirements are let alone the games, they may be telling the truth. When the game's system reqs come out we can more accurately call "Bullshit". Despite that my guess is if it ends up not being able to run on current gen it could come out on next gen although I personally don't think the game should come to consoles and be watered down for the sake of profit.

I am sure they will adapt and publish it on the new consols as they did with the divinity series, but it will properly not be before next year

The presentation was messy to say the least. Some people can take that as a honest to hearth presentation, others can look at it as something negative, etc.. In the end, it showed new concepts that revolves around the divinity system (which was based on baldurs gate and other similar crpgs, so it's not a sin or anything... basically divinity 3 with a DnD skin). But this talk about textures and technical aspects was a complete bullshit, the game looks like dragon age inquisition at best lol even the switch can theoretically run this, c'mon now. The supposed image of honesty was completely shattered, just say the game is a exclusive, the engine/interfaces are tailored best for PC and move on. Divinity was just like that, later they released console ports that barely works (regarding the interface). This statement kinda pissed me off tbh, I love Larian, but this is bullshit (and I don't even have a console, just to let that clear)

@gleencross: if the engine and interfaces are best tailored for PC that would most likely mean that the textures and technical aspects are also best tailored for PC. Considering all assets have to be compiled and ran through the engine. Without any actual system req information who is to say they are lying or not.

@watercrack445: On par? It looks much worse. Of course the consoles can run this game. And regarding graphics and etc, the Larian games were never know to be demanding by any means. And to finish their nonsensical PR, they even trowed some shade at the Stadia, saying not everyone loved the system was the understatement of the year lol Everyone knows they got more financial support from Google and the wizards of the coast, good for them, there's no reason to disguise or lie about it.

I get everybody wants to be up in arms about somebody saying their favorite system couldn't run this game, but really, if Google hadn't paid to get a Stadia version, BG3 would probably be launching on PC only and nobody would be batting an eye.

A console port will probably come later, same as the DOS, BG, and PoE games, and later (at this point) probably seems next generation.

@mogan: Correct.

And then the armchair devs here pretend to know how easy it is to port to console (hint: personal experience says it's not easy to port a realistic game while keeping the FPS steady). It's far more demanding than they realize, and it would take many months extra to port it properly. As you mentioned, they'll focus on the PC launch first (which Stadia is technically under).

That said, it is odd they've already signaled that they're not interested in current-gen. After the PC launch, I don't see why they don't at least try to release to such a potentially wide audience (along with next-gen)...

@mogan: I think it's more of a case of insulting our intelligence with their excuses than anything else. If Google threw buckets of cash at them then fine, say so. But to say it can't run on a system that you've never tried it on because it's just too gorgeous is ridiculous considering they're going to have to scale the game to various PC hardware specs.

@bdrtfm: Well, it's even more insulting when the game looks like shit, lol It looks like a poor man's version of dragon age inquisition, a goddamn 6 years old game. Did you see the face and the animations of that halfling who confronts the party before the little dungeon? How that crap is too "advanced" for current consoles?

Yeah, right. So I assume there will be no graphics settings for the PC version? Only those with a modern gaming PC will be able to play it?

Yea, this sounds like Google money talking. The Series X and PS5 are going to be more than capable of running what I watched yesterday. To be honest, the game play demo really looked like a DnD skinned Divinity Original Sin 2. Not that that is a bad thing, DOS2 is an excellent game, but it already runs surprisingly well on current gen consoles and BG3 doesn't look radically different.

@gleencross: I haven't played DA Inquisition...still in my backlog, unfortunately. Can you move the camera up high like DOS, pause combat? I may need to move that up in the queue.

@lionheartssj1: Oh man, to be completely honest, I despise Inquisition, lol my advice would be for you to remove this game from your backlog completely. The story and characters in Inquisition are not that good, the game is like an infinite fetch quest, the combat is simple minded, the villain is completely idiotic, etc However, the original dragon age shares some very minor similarities with divinity, it's more strategic, even tactical. Similar to Final Fantasy XII, you literally "program" your characters before combat, can pause and perform an action by yourself if things are getting out of hand, etc.. This, imo, is the best and most classy solution for the turn base dilemma, but the majority didn't liked this very much unfortunately. So, of all the dragon age games, only the original is worth playing.

@gleencross: Oh wow, thanks for this heads up. 'Infinite fetch quest' was all I needed to hear. I really enjoyed the original DA for the reasons you outlined. The second one felt more action-y in comparison so I wasn't quick to adopt the 3rd based on that trend. Now I may not give it much time.

@lionheartssj1: That's a shame, I always like to recommend the original dragon age and final fantasy 12 because of the combat system, but you already experienced DA. Wish more people could experiment this combat system, I think it's genius. Sounds complicated, but not really, you "program" things and simply watch it later. It seems Pillars of Eternity have a similar system, eventually I will try this game.

@gleencross: Yea, I really need to go back and play around with the combat in DA:O. I ended up using it like FF XII's Gambit system, but it could be played like the Infinity Engine games. That's what Pillars was mimicking too. I think if I had originally played DA:O on the PC rather than the 360, I probably would have done more Infinity-like combat management since I was using the mouse and keyboard.

Who cares? These consoles are dead already, they'll port it to new consoles. PC is the best and biggest gaming platform anyway.

That's like saying, I really want to use another knife to cut my steak. But I just don't think any other knife, except a steak knife would work. The PC is the steak knife. And the steak is the video game. You can cut a steak with a butter knife, if it's something you really wanted to accomplish. Or a knife maker pays the cook enough money, to use their knives exclusively. I wonder which one it is.

It doesn't look THAT amazing, set the thing to medium. I mean, I have little to no interest in the game but he's talking out his ass when he says it's impossible, he admits as much himself right there.

But hey, it's their game and their profit margin. I wonder how much Google paid them to throw away half of their customerbase... that'll surely have no long term consequences /s.

@Xylymphydyte: It's a niche franchise with a bulk of their playerbase existing on PC where the game is still coming out. They're not losing much.

Reminds me of people begging for some niche Japanese game coming to the PS3 to come to the 360. It already only pushes five digits on the PS3 in the west. Is it really worth it porting the game to get just a couple more thousand sales? Or when the PS4 owners cried over Titanfall and then when the sequel came to PS4 it didn't even break a million during its launch despite having double the install base of the Xbox One.

@DarkCaptain3: It's quite clear it's only on the stadia because Google paid them to put it there. If Google hadn't paid, they probably would have ignored it. Not like you can blame them, more money for development is good for them.

Had it been exclusive to Stadia like some sleazy Epic game deal then we could get mad, but it's not.

It's mostly very similar looking to Divinity with a few upgrades and the close ups for conversation, but there is nothing in the footage I've watched to suggest it wouldn't run and look fine on current machines. This is pure Google sponsored PR...which is a shame coming from Larian. I thought they had more integrity.

Considering this game launches well after the XSX and PS5 have entered the market, I'm going to have to call bullshit. But you know what, that's okay. You made the decision to publish your game exclusively on a platform that was effectively Dead or Arrival, so making smart decisions obviously isn't in your wheelhouse anyway.

And if you're interested in Digital Streaming to enhance your games specs, than it seems kind of silly that you would invest in Stadia and not the far superior xCloud Microsoft service.

@Thanatos2k: And, honestly, even Stadia itself can be dead in a few years. So this will be a PC exclusive at first, eventually they will adapt the interface to work on consoles (controller commands and etc, which was barely acceptable in the divinity ports). This was very bad PR, they should have mentioned the interface, not the "textures", lol what fucking textures, are you kidding me?
