Baldur's Gate 3 Dev Denounces Threats As Game Passes Huge Milestone

A Larian Studios executive notes "a few bad eggs" can cause havoc for the RPG's community.

It looks like Larian Studios has landed a critical hit, as Baldur's Gate 3 has far surpassed 10 million players. The director of publishing for the developer revealed the major milestone for the RPG over the weekend, as well as warned against "threats [and] toxicity" toward his team.

Spotted by VGC, Larian executive Michael Douse mentioned the dramatic player base increase on X (formerly known as Twitter) while talking about how mod support is coming to consoles for Baldur's Gate 3. "This is a game that went from [roughly] 2 [million] players to way over 10 [million] in a very short space of time, so it's natural the conversation becomes muddier and complex," Douse wrote on the social media site. "But in order to maintain the same level of dialogue, we need people to understand that these conversations take time."

Apparently, Baldur's Gate 3 updates have been disrupting unofficial mods for the RPG too, leading to some unkind feedback toward the developers as official mod support gets worked on. Douse does say that most of the game's community is understanding. But, "a few bad eggs will start a fire," he writes.

Earlier this year, Larian Studios founder and CEO Swen Vincke had some strong words about gaming subscription services. He ultimately believes "direct from developer to players is the way." It's also likely a large reason why Baldur's Gate 3 isn't included as part of PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass.

Baldur's Gate 3 was GameSpot's game of the year for 2023 and recently won the DICE game of the year award as well. For more, check out GameSpot's Baldur's Gate 3 review along with the guides hub for the RPG.

"He ultimately believes "direct from developer to players is the way."

This is only true for studios that can sell massive amounts (1m+) guaranteed. The developer now gets full price control for as long as they'd like, while the players get shafted.

Example: I bought Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth a month after release for $39, physical (new). The digital is still $69, full price. If it were "direct from developer", there's no way it would have been $39.

BG3 is still full price, 8 months after release. There's a physical edition for a premium, but it hasn't even shipped yet.

@tc77: Larian? I have to imagine the success of BG3 has done nothing but good for D&D.

If you need a reminder of why you hate D&D play this overrated pile of crap and have fun missing attacks at 75% four times in a row.

@vgmkyle: So don't play Disco Elysium (which is not a DnD game) ... You will curse the developers for eternity.

@vgmkyle: Do not see it being as great as they saying even if I liked DnD. I can be objective even with genres I do not like. Just did not see it in this game.

Somehow that doesn't surprise me.

@vgmkyle: It's a pretty popular pastime. And I imagine there's a large overlap between people who like video games and people who like tabletop RPGs.

@willhouse4: I see his point. This like arguing with a star wars fan about Battefront 1 and 2 being garbage. It seems there is more fanboism than actual objective opinions on this game,.

@gaeandilth: ? Dude, the people who loved it loved it. You can hate on those people all you want, but the fact remains that for them it was an amazing experience.

There should be actions taken for such people. Revoke their BG3 game. Ban their Steam account.

Bit harsh maybe, unless we're talking death threats of course.

Patches, updates, new content and official mod support will always trump unofficial mod support. Everyone knows this. You use them at your own risk and have nobody to blame but yourself if things go wrong. Not sure what's worse, that these people are brazen enough to attack others for something that's not supported or that these people are stupid enough to use unofficial mods in the first place when official mods are known to becoming down the pipe. But I guess some people get all uppity when they can't play a game in GOD Mode, fly around a map or make all the characters in a game nude.

It will never not impress me how stupid some people can be. I don't understand how you can be intelligent enough to go through the hoops necessary to install mods for BG3, and yet stupid enough to think that updates won't break them, since there's no official mod support for the game.

@ltkcentaur: They are threatening people over a game. There's not a lot of intelligence here.
