Baldur's Gate 3 Announced, Coming From Divinity: Original Sin Studio

Confirmed at last.

After what's been a long period of general inactivity, the ex-BioWare RPG series Baldur's Gate is back. Baldur's Gate III was officially announced during Google's E3 Stadia Connect stream, which was largely focused on nailing down details about the cloud stream service. Beyond new information about its price and release window, we also learned about many of Stadia's games--and they include Baldur's Gate III. However, the game is not a Stadia exclusive and will also be released on PC.

This announcement doesn't come as a complete surprise. The possibility of Baldur's Gate III came up recently when Larian Studios, the developer behind Divinity: Original Sin and Divinity: Original Sin II, posted a teaser to its website involving the number three. What appeared to be a mistaken mention of Baldur's Gate in the metadata of the teaser seemed to imply the franchise was being resurrected, rather than this tease being for Divinity: Original Sin III. The official announcement was accompanied by a new trailer (which can be seen below).

Now Playing: Baldur's Gate 3 Announcement Trailer / Easter Eggs Breakdown With Larian Founder

In the trailer, a knight undergoes a horrifying transformation. His eyes darken, muscles and bones contort, and skin bloats into sludge as he slowly changes into a squid-like, Lovecraft-looking creature. It's a tad disturbing.

We got to chat with Larian ahead of the announcement, and you can check out the video above for a breakdown of the Baldur's Gate III trailer and a look at some Easter eggs. We also spoke with Larian about how Baldur's Gate aims to do what no RPG has before.

In a press release, Larian wrote, "Baldur's Gate III will push the boundaries of the RPG genre and offer a rich narrative with unparalleled player freedom, high-stakes decisions, unique companion characters and memorable combat. It is Larian Studios' biggest production ever and will be playable together with friends or as a single-player adventure."

Like its predecessors, Baldur's Gate III will also be available for PC. Larian didn't provide a specific release date for Baldur's Gate III, but the studio did say it may not launch this year. We'll probably hear more at E3 2019, most likely during The PC Gaming Show.

This could go either way. I enjoy the combat in the Divine Divinity series but the story and character interactions are very lacking.

Probably I will love a Larian RPG but... why Baldur's Gate? There are too much in risk here.

1. Will be real time + pause? Probably I would have no problem in turn base but for sure I won't like a change of genre (worst would be an action rpg like Divinity 2, we have the Fallout 3 example so it is possible to ruin things even more...)

2. Will continue the same plot? BG is an ended story, we dislike all the changes Beamdog made to a beloved saga, would be terrible to continue a saga (and even worst if the story/game is not as good as the original).

3. If it will be another genre, and/or, another plot... Why is called Baldur's Gate "3"? Maybe for sales have all the sense to break a franchise only to sell few dollars more, but not for us, not for the fans.

Nice, but that trailer showed nothing. It's as useful as Elder Scroll VI reveal from last year's E3. While I'm optimistic they'll do a good job with the game, I need to see gameplay footage before I consider buying it. I saw in another article that they might not use isometric camera in this one. I pray they won't turn this into a 1st or 3rd person game. That just won't work well when controlling party members during combat.

Sweet. Coming to PC. Would have missed out if it was Stadia exclusive.

I'd really like to know what Dungeons & Dragons system this game will use. Prior Baldur's Gate games were based on 2nd edition, largely, and D&D is now up to 5th edition. My guess would be that it will use 5e rules, as that's the current rules set and the 2e rules are a seen as a bit archaic at this point, but it's also possible they might maintain the 2e system for fidelity between the games (although I would be quite surprised if characters could in any way be ported from the older BG titles into the upcoming BG3).

Worst case would be Larian using an original system and using the D&D races and classes as window dressing. The Baldur's Gate titles were among the best in PC RPG adaptations of D&D, and if BG3 does not actually use D&D mechanics I will be severely dissapointed.

@izraal: The PC gamer article has WAY more info than this gamespot advertorial.

@izraal: According to Game Informer's interview with Larian founder Swen Vincke, it started with 5e and then tweaked to make it work as a video game.

@zmanbarzel:

Alright, that's what I was expecting. It's not my favorite D&D system, but it's serviceable and it does have a low threshold for mastery, so it should be approachable. High hopes for this one.

Disappointing this amazing announcement was co-opted by Google for their crappy platform. There is no way this is exclusive to Stadia.

Go Larian. You are probably the only developer left who can do this series justice.

@Thanatos2k: I can trust the Pillars of Eternity devs (Obsidian?) to do it. As long as MS doesn't make it Xbox exclusive.

@lostn: They're Microsoft now. Like Bioware, they will produce one, maybe two more good games before the decline sets in.

@Thanatos2k: BG 3 will be a freeze-fest on Stadia. Pathfinding is going have to be set pitifully low in order to even play.

@jsprunk: Just gather your party before venturing forth.

Can't wait for the OS X version, though.

@siarhei: Oh, I'm sure that Larian will port it to consoles at some point--especially after the GBox Dumb falls on its face.
