Avengers: Endgame Tops Avatar At US Box Office, Still Trails Worldwide

The Marvel superhero movie continues to climb up the all-time box office charts.

Avengers: Endgame was finally dethroned at the US/Canada box office this weekend, with John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum taking the No. 1 spot. The Marvel movie did, however, reach $771 million domestically, meaning it has surpassed James Cameron's Avatar as the No. 2 highest-grossing movie ever in the US and Canada. Endgame still trails Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which made $937 million in the US and Canada to sit in the No. 1 position.

On a worldwide basis, Endgame has now made $2.62 billion. It still trails Avatar, which is the biggest movie in the history of film with $2.78 billion globally. Endgame will stay in theatres presumably for a while longer, so it still has the opportunity to catch up to Avatar before its theatrical run comes to an end. The next big movie to potentially keep an eye on for these purposes will be this December's Star Wars Episode 9: The Rise of Skywalker.

Now Playing: Avengers: Endgame Passes Avatar in the US Box Office, Still Behind Worldwide - GS Universe News Update

Endgame has already crushed a variety of box office records, including the biggest opening ever for a movie. That's true both domestically and worldwide, as the movie came out of the gates incredibly strongly.

Last week, Endgame surpassed Cameron's other box office smash, Titanic, to become the No. 2 movie of all time globally. Cameron released a nice statement in which he congratulated the team at Marvel for the incredible achievement that he says demonstrates that the film business is alive and thriving.

The next MCU movie is Spider-Man: Far From Home, which is a Sony production made in partnership with Marvel, and it releases in July. After that, Marvel plans to reveal more details about MCU Phase 4 this summer. Disney has already confirmed release dates for a variety of Marvel movies, but it did so without attaching specific films to those dates. We do have some guesses about what's coming when, as Marvel has confirmed plans to move ahead with certain movies, but we're still awaiting official confirmation.

Why do people even care? Plus if Avatar really did that well , it is just a single movie so far and not part of a massive franchise engineered a certain way to brainwash for the masses.

Avatar was actually thought provoking and interesting and still has the best 3D tech of any movie ever released up to this day.

WTF!

I thought this was a VIDEO GAME website.

I don't watch any of these movies or shows.

It's like attending a class on biology, just to find today's subject is the Fourier series.

C'mon, Gamespot!

@proceeder: it’s I why I frequent Destructoid. Gamspot and IGN are just GoT and Marvel movies. It’s hilarious really. I don’t think I ever visited a site where the target content is so unrelated to the name of the site.

@proceeder: They are a very interesting website. I'd also checkout Dreamcast guy on Youtube for game reviews. He goes into so much detail and is so passionate . Even if i don't agree with him i still give him a thumbs up lol. Also ACG on youtube is excellent too.

@constablerick: But if he followed your advice, what would @proceeder whine about??? Think of all the free time he'd have.

@constablerick: Yeah. Thanks for reminding me what clicking does.

It's not much of a choice when 8/10 frontpage articles are about anything but videogames.

It's not like there aren't enough alternative to get your Avatar and Game of Thrones fill.

@proceeder: it's still a choice. You chose to click on the link, you chose to get upset, you chose to comment. Just like I chose to call you out about how ridiculous it is to click on things you don't want to read and then complain about it.

@constablerick: You mean like how you continue to complain about the fact that I am expressing my opinion in the comment section?

Why I am upset is that one of the last few refuges to find articles about my hobby by writers I enjoy reading was saturated by coverage of a very popular medium in which I have no interest. None.

I have never watched Lost, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, the Walkling Dead, etc. And, that doesn't mean they're bad, it's just that I'm not the audience for those shows.

The overwhelming number of articles in a videogame website about TV shows and movies, to me, is like receiving junk mail. It's just annoying and intrusive because it was presented in the wrong place.

@proceeder: not complaining. Just think it's ridiculous. Just dont click on the articles you don't want to read. Do you check all your junk mail as well? No need to be upset. Don't like it, go to a different site. It's there for the people that want to read it.

@gleencross: Right instead its the evil mouse and rent-a-director pumping out this stuff. New Star Wars is for modern children. More so that the first two trilogy were. The original trilogy was a fantasy for everyone, the prequel had an identity crisis but found its place with Revenge of the Sith, but these new movies feel solely based to sell action figures.

@Blade_Runner_07: So many things are dumbed down now i was really happy to see a game such as Plague Tale: Innocence released that is definitely not dumbed down and is quite brutal in both story and action. Better than any of these rubbish Marvel movies.

@deviltaz35: Just remember to blame the companies, not the people. The people are gonna be stupid and buy whatever's on the shelf regardless, but the people making these films have a responsibility to make quality and not just find what works and repeat over and over.

People didn't get soft, the people making this crap are just trying to be all-inclusive, totally accessible, and on the fence about everything and it makes for a product that doesn't have any soul.

@aross2004: 90% fresh, two billion made, and a great audience reception. Let's not let these sore losers try to change history. TFA is terrific and brought star wars back from the brink of jar jar lucas.

@Bread_or_Decide: How was Jar Jar even relevant when he was really only in 1 movie where he actually spoke much?Starwars has been pointless since the original trilogy and should have just stayed as 3 movies. What we have now is just complete garbage and nothing like the greatness that was Star wars. It was meant to be a relatively low budget affair that was it's charm and they showed such talent to pull off that first movie , especially sound effects wise without all the modern gizmos of today.

Too many modern movies including Disney Star wars are just glorified light shows full of nonsense. Pretty much as pointless as fireworks on New years eve.

@aross2004: Um, no. The "big bad villain" of TFA was beaten by a girl who 10 minutes earlier learned she had Force abilities and a Stormtrooper. This is the same villain who terrified the legendary Luke Skywalker in Episode 8.

It was really poorly written and didn't utilize the older cast very well. It wasted them. It's garbage.

@Bread_or_Decide: Hey, some people like the evil, all-powerful villains to get beaten by a homeless guy and a force sensitive ham sandwich. Doesn't mean that kind of writing isn't complete garbage.

@aross2004: They love people who are easily brainwashed so i wouldn't get concerned. You are doing your part by feeding the machine with the scraps to keep it running.
