AU Shippin' Out June 6-June 10: Duke Nukem Forever
The Duke is back after a 13-year hiatus to slay aliens, ogle women, and save the world in his signature kickass style.
The Electronic Entertainment Expo, the most anticipated gaming event of the year, is once again upon us. It will be hard to pay attention to anything else this week, especially knowing the sheer quantity of awesome news scheduled to come out of this year's show. But as fate would have it, a slew of awesome titles are due on store shelves in the next few days, meaning that dedicated gamers are going to have to find a way to keep one eye on the news and the other on the nearest console.
First up is Gearbox Software's long-awaited first-person shooter Duke Nukem Forever, a game 13 years in the making. The aliens have returned to Earth once again, messing up Duke's plans to woo the entire female population by stealing them from under our hero's nose. This wouldn't be a Duke game without over-the-top action, an arsenal of ridiculous-sounding weapons (try the multi-rocket-launching devastator weapon on for size), and a whole lot of self-aware pop culture references.
If shooting aliens, lifting weights, admiring your abs in the mirror, reading dirty magazines, or flirting with virtual women isn't your thing, you might want to consider Infamous 2, the follow-up action adventure from Sucker Punch studios that's all about making the right (or wrong?) choice. This sequel offers a more open-world adventure than its predecessors, with a whole bunch of new side missions (including ones you can customise yourself) and new powers for our superhero Cole, who has been blamed for the destruction of Empire City and must now undertake a new journey. According to Sucker Punch, the moral decisions you make this time around will really affect not just the outcome of the game, but also things like Cole's personality and the personalities of those around him.
Finally this week, THQ's Red Faction: Armageddon makes Mars exciting again as an alien infestation replaces armed uprising. The game takes extensive destructibility to a new level, with the somewhat versatile magnet gun making destruction a particular thrill.
