Assassin's Creed 2, new Ghost Recon due by April '10; I Am Alive delayed

[UPDATE] Ubisoft confirms stealthy, heavily armed sequels will join postponed survival horror game on next year's release docket.

Last Thanksgiving, French publisher Ubisoft--unburdened by Turkey-gorging duties--issued a robust earnings report for the six months ended September 30, 2008. As part of that earnings release, the company confirmed that it was working on a follow-up to Assassin's Creed, which has sold an estimated 5 million units worldwide. Later rumors had the game forgoing the original's medieval Middle Eastern setting for Revolutionary France.

No Caption Provided

Today, as part of another healthy financial report, Ubisoft referred to Assassin's Creed 2 by name, declaring that it will ship sometime during the 12 months ending March 31, 2010. Given that the first game was one of Ubisoft's tent-pole holiday 2007 games, a Q4 2009 launch looks likely. Ubisoft's next fiscal year will also see a sequel to the popular high-tech shooter Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2, originally released in March 2007.

"Our [fiscal year 2009-10] lineup comprises several potential blockbusters with the launch of seven franchises, including Assassin's Creed [2], Splinter Cell [Conviction], and a new Ghost Recon, as well as four license-based games including James Cameron's Avatar, three new brands, and a further-enhanced casual-games portfolio," crowed Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot. "Although we have to be cautious in light of the current economic environment, we expect Ubisoft to once again be one of the most dynamic and profitable publishers in the games industry in [calendar year] 2009." Ubisoft also said it would launch four movie-license-based titles during the year, including one based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

[UPDATE] Initially, the new Ghost Recon was presumed to be a third Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter game. However, since the publication of this story, GameSpot has learned the project in question will be an all-new game in the Tom Clancy series, not a sequel to the popular GRAWs.

Unfortunately, the excitement generated by the Assassin's Creed 2 and Ghost Recon revelations was tempered somewhat by confirmation of a major delay. I Am Alive, the multiplatform horror-survival game that was the centerpiece of Ubisoft's E3 2008 presentation, "will require further development time and will now bolster the lineup for 2009-10," the company said. Previously, it was expected to arrive for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this spring.

HOO-AH! GRAW 3, ive been waiting for this announcement since they made GRAW 2. Love the series, and the original GRAW was the first game I played on my Xbox. As for assasin's creed, I really hope they fix the repetition, but I'll definatley pick it up

Wherever they decide to set the game, I hope they keep the immersion factor as strongly as it was in the first. It was an absolute joy to traverse those gorgeous locales.

Did I just see something about Conviction or was I seeing things? Jeeze it's about time they gave us an update on that. I've been waiting forever just for an update. Way to go Ubisoft! Can't wait for Conviction and AC 2.

it would be cool if the next Ghost Recon game was simply more responsive. I never finished the first GRAW because of the frustratingly sluggish controls.

Graw 1 & 2 are excellent so a new one is welcome news. We need a fresh look for it though in terms of locations.

Red Dawn: Where are they going to go from there eh? If you want to play a cool Assassin game set during the crusades, why would you buy another game? That story is done, its time to see the lineage of either another Assassin, or another ancestor of the same guy. Personally, I'm waiting for the one with a ninja set in Edo perior Japan.

a new GRAW that's going to be awesome and hopefully the configurations are better, i want to see a rated M, tighter gun fight, and enemy AI. AC's 2 is going to be great as well and it's kind of weird that it set in the french revolution but overall it's going to make history again and i wonder will they use the same tech as they used in PoP.

GRAW 2 in my opinion is the best multiplayer shooter ever made. And for me FPS or modified FPS, is all about multiplayer. If it scores a 9.5 for multiplayer experience, then the second best real world shooter can't score any higher than a 7. I can't wait for it's successor. Whatever form it takes..

A new Ghost Recon! That makes me sooo happy. Although I liked the GRAW series I though Ghost Recon could be so much more then what it was. I am ver excited for the new Ghost and Assassin's Creed-Splinter Cell: Conviction is looking good too.

People need to understand that Ubisoft is one of the most under appreciated Publishers EVAR. I mean Prince Of Persia, GRAW, Assassin's Creed, Rainbow Six, Splinter Cell, Enchanted Arms I could go on and on about how many awesome games and series they make.

Now Assassins Creed may have been a touch repetitive toward the end but still you can deny the awesomeness of it. And now Assassins Creed 2!!! Finally! We get the story we deserve and the kick ass gameplay. Now all Ubisoft needs to do is make it just a bit less repetitive and add some new gameplay.

Sucks that I am Alive got delayed, but a new ghost recon is good news :D. Just just hope they find a way to make the new assassins creed less repetitive like the last one. That was pretty much my only problem with the first assassins creed; so take your time ubisoft.

It seems several people are not picking up on the fact that this article does not say the games will be released in April 2010. The games are slated for the fiscal year ending in March 2010, so they will be out BY April 2010. That means they will probably still be 2009 releases to hit the holiday season. I guess people should read more than the headline before commenting...
