Apollo Justice Ace Attorney Hands-On

Capcom's popular law series gets a new face in the courtroom.

One of the surprises at Capcom's recent press event was a playable version of its newly announced Apollo Justice Ace Attorney title. The game is a continuation of the popular Phoenix Wright series but features a new focus on up-and-coming trial lawyer Apollo Justice. We had the chance to try out a playable work-in-progress version of the DS game--dubbed the mock-trial version--that featured one case, "The Turnabout Trump," with some very familiar faces.

The demo stuck close to the model of the previous Phoenix Wright games. The demo opening showed off a crime and then segued to Apollo's somewhat spastic internal monologue as he prepped for his court appearance with Kristoph Gavin. The demo's dramatic twist to the proceedings was Apollo's client, onetime ace attorney Phoenix Wright, who's gone all granola here, sporting a knit cap and stubble and playing piano in the Borscht Belt Club. The former attorney is accused of murdering one Shadi Smith during a poker game and is in need of some defense.

The dialogue-intensive gameplay is in line with what's been seen in the previous games. You'll read through Apollo's inner dialogue, talk to various people involved in the trial, and interrogate individuals during their testimony. You'll collect information and evidence that you'll rely on to solve the case when the time comes.

Apollo Justice's presentation is in line with the graphics and audio we've seen in the previous Phoenix Wright games. The game features richly detailed, partially animated 2D art and a modest mix of sound effects and audio clips for dramatic moments. The game uses the same onscreen interface and includes options on the DS touch screen you can select by tapping with the stylus.

Based on what we played, Apollo Justice Ace Attorney is shaping up to be a solid continuation of the quirky ace attorney games. The game looks good and plays well on the DS and should please fans of the series--well, European fans, at any rate. At the moment, Apollo Justice is confirmed for release only in Europe next year, with no word on a US release yet. That said, given Phoenix Wright's popularity, we expect an announcement for a stateside release soon. Look for more on the game in the coming months.

I can't say I like the look of Phoenix's replacement (the whole front-spike look just doesn't do it for me). And while it's definitely a bummer that Phoenix & co. will be relegated to supporting roles this time around, Apollo Justice (and I thought the name Phoenix Wright sounded ridiculous) looks to be a solid addition to the cult-favorite DS series. Still, Capcom should honestly consider revamping the series, from both a visual and gameplay standpoint (making the game even that much better).

I'm getting it for sure. I love the games even if the gameplay doesn't change. I do agree they should add to the gameplay but it's like watch another show in a series I like

Capcom must be crazy, because they are throwing away one of the most charismatic characters of all time. AND WHAT THE HECK WILL HAPPEN WITH MAYA FEY?!?!?!?! She won't appear in this game, so what happened to her?

Hopefully, with Phoenix's trilogy completed Capcom will use this opportunity to make a fresh start with the series and introduce some new gameplay features. Just look at the bonus case from the first Phoenix Wright. C'mon fellas, we know the DS is up to it, make the cases deeper!

Oh dont be so scornful, Apollo Justice will be amazing! If you want a real spolier then you'll wanna know that in the last trial in this game there is an actual jury!

mkoo: What? You want another one? We've pretty much covered everything about Phoenix! We found out about his past (as a child), we will be finding out more about his past when T&T comes out, we found out a whole bunch of stuff about the Fey Family on the 2nd game, we'll be finding out more about Mia in T&T, I mean honestly, that covers pretty much everything about the major characters! If they were to make another Phoenix Wright, it will be average, just like the 2nd game. Why? Because it's just going to be another notch on Phoenix's belt where he just goes through a bunch of trials and all the regular stuff. That's why Capcom decided to make a new one in which we can see what happens in Phoenix's "future" since the present and past for him has already been covered and they can't do anything with him anymore.

mkoo: you never know, Apollo could be a more likeable character. Keep an open mind... that's the only way to have gotten turned on to the Phoenix Wright series in the first place.

Just what I needed; I love the series, and a redesign / makeover sounds great. I'm not sure when the original Gyakuten Saiban 3 was released, but I'm sure we'll see a lot of improvement with part four, in many aspects of game-making. Can't wait!

Phoenix Wright was disbarred from law, after being caught using fabricated evidence; he is not an attorney, and therefore cannot defend himself (Wikipedia for the win!).

Good enough it being European exclusive, but i want Trials and Tribulations. It has an english language setting though, so i'll just import it from Play-Asia. Apollo doesn't look a patch on Phoenix.

YAY! European Exclusive! But I do hope Americans get this amazing looking game as well because it would be unfair for them to miss out on. Despite that though, Americans will be getting Phoenix Wright 3 very soon this year, where as we Europeans have to wait til next year to get out hands on it:(

I would've have thought: Ace Attorney being the main title would've made more sense.

It's a localization of a Japanese game, but it uses the DS features more because this game was actually created for the DS. The three Phoenix Wright games were all originally GBA games, ported across to DS. Although they added the last case to the first game as a DS-specific bonus, it's understandable that they didn't take full advantage of all the DS could do.

Is this a totally new game or an update of a Japanese game? If it is totally new, I hope that they include more DS specific evidence collecting, like in the last case of the first Phoenix Wright game.
