Another Batch of All-Time Great SNES Games Now Out on New 3DS

Three more classic games now available on the Virtual Console.

The third set of Super Nintendo games to be released on the 3DS eShop is now available and include some of the greatest games of all time. But like with the previous SNES games, you'll need a New 3DS in order to play them.

Today's eShop update brings Super Metroid, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and Donkey Kong Country 2 to the 3DS Virtual Console. As with the previous games (which have included Earthbound, Super Mario World, and Mario Kart), each of these games costs $8. There's no discount available if you happen to own any of them on the Wii or Wii U Virtual Consoles.

These are the last SNES games Nintendo confirmed for the 3DS Virtual Console when it revealed in early March that it would finally bring them to (New) 3DS. More SNES games could be on the way, but right now we don't know which ones they would be or when they're coming.

Also as part of today's eShop update, you can grab an open beta for Lost Reavers on Wii U, or pick up Shovel Knight on Wii U or 3DS for $10 each.

New 3DS required yet the PSP from 2004 emulates SNES and GBA games flawlessly and that was fan support and on non-Nintendo and non-PC hardware. Ridiculous that regular 3DS can't completely outperform the PSP, a platform that was 7 years older than it. Also, they changed NOTHING about the games and can't enable cross-buy? Oh Nintendo....

@xOmniCloudx: when Sony announced Ps now the general comment was "they charging for games I already own to play again on a new platform" then the ps2 updated games came along and once again "I have the Ps 2 disc I'm not buying again" yet Nintendo release old games with no improvements on a new platform and they get praised........ I don't see the difference hence the stupid comment trying to point that out

On the subject of remasters ps4 was the "port" station 4 and yet praise to Nintendo for there hd ports ........ the majority of the game community is wired don't like the practice of one company - loves it from another

Ms wanted the all digital future a big fuss kicked up yet the majority download digital ........ and so many now say disc should be gone .....

I wish I had realized these were coming out today. Needed something to play a couple days ago and got Donkey Kong Country when I really wanted Super Metroid. Never played DKC as a kid so absent any sort of nostalgia, I am finding it to be a pretty mediocre platformer so far. Controls don't feel as tight as, say, Mario games and the challenge seems to all be in fiddly timing. Still a very pretty game though.

I love Nintendo but they suck. How come they arent giving us a cross buy feat with virtual console games. This is why alot of long time hardcore Nintendo gamers are moving else where. Nintendo just cant get out of their ancient ways and its hurting gamers.

@Flyin3lvl: Not to defend Sony but they DO have cross-buy and a very good one at that and have for many years now. Sony only charges for HD remasters which are not versions people previously owned because they didn't exist prior...

some truly amazing SNES games to buy on the New 3DS! especially Donkey Kong Country 2! hopefully more SNES games as well as other games from other systems get released on the virtual console. if the first two DKC games are on the 3DS im pretty sure DKC 3 is next. here is hoping they finally release Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island on the New 3DS!

@walterg74: Yeah, I re-played all DK games in ROM and got my nostalgia fix. It was great that I could save whenever I wanted, so I easily passed the difficult segments without getting frustrated. Hey, I never said I was a hardcore gamer ;)

I don't get why games that were released on GBA aren't compatible with the normal 3DS. Guess I'll just download the games on my phone for free and Nintendo will get none of my money for them.

I don't care if your PC/laptop is a total goddamn potato, just download an emulator for free in a matter of minutes and pay nothing for any of the SNES classics.

@onionking108: According to Nintendo, the standard 3DS simply isn't powerful enough to run SNES games well, and knowing what I do of emulation, I believe them.

If these games were ports, they'd run on a standard 3DS without a problem, but, they're emulated.

Accurate emulation is very demanding.

@onionking108: Agreed. I saw the last article having Earthbound and almost instantly grabbed my 3DS but then I read it has to be the New 3DS. Stupid move. Must have been decided by Buzz Killington.

I will not upgrade my 3DS just to play old SNES games, as much as I would enjoy some of them.
