Amazon announces $99 streaming device; has 2GB RAM, quad-core processor, game controller is $40

Retailer announces "Amazon Fire TV" today during media event in New York City; Amazon Game Studios to create its own games, the first of which is a third-person shooter called Sev Zero.

[UPDATE 2] Amazon has released more details about the Fire TV. The $99 box features a Qualcomm Quad Core Snapdragon Krait 300 processor with Adreno 320GPU, and 2GB of RAM to support "high performance game experiences." It's reportedly faster than competitors like Apple TV, Roku, and Chromecast, but we won't know for sure until we can test it out.

Developers can program their Amazon Fire TV games to support Amazon's $40 Fire Controller or the console's Bluetooth controller, Amazon says on its special developers website. What's more, Amazon Fire TV supports up to 7 remotes and game controllers to be connected simultaneously, and each controller can be associated with an individual player ID.

Amazon Fire TV games will also allow you to use a combination of controllers (remotes and game-specific controllers) to "make multiplayer gaming easy for everyone," Amazon says.

Finally, the Amazon Fire TV console will support Amazon's payment services for in-game microtransactions. Because Amazon Fire TV users will need to register with their Amazon accounts, their payment profiles are already on file with no further effort to the player. Amazon Fire TV fully supports Amazon's in-app purchase API so that developers can offer a range of items to players including subscriptions and one-off purchases.

[UPDATE] Amazon has now detailed the Amazon Fire TV's gaming capabilities. The Fire Game Controller will sell for $40, though you can also play with the Amazon Fire TV controller. Games from EA, Disney, and Sega are coming to the device, and a version of Minecraft will also be available.

Amazon Game Studios is also making games itself, the first of which is a third-person shooter called Sev Zero. Presumably, Sev Zero will only be available on Amazon Fire TV and other Amazon devices. Amazon also acquired Killer Instinct developer Double Helix Games last year.

The Amazon Fire TV will be available for $99. A version of the box bundled with the Fire Game Controller will sell for $140. It's on sale from today.

The original story is below.

Today during a media event in New York City, retailer Amazon announced its long-rumored streaming device, which it is calling the Amazon Fire TV.

The device features a quad-core "best-in-class" processor with a dedicated GPU, as well as 2GB of RAM. Amazon promises 2X the performance of competitors like Apple TV, Roku, and Chromecast. The Amazon Fire TV will also ship with a Bluetooth controller that has a microphone in it for voice control.

During a live demonstration, Amazon showed off the Fire TV user interface, which included a tab for "Games." However, the role games will play in the device remains to be seen. The event is ongoing and you can follow along via GameSpot sister site CNET's live-blog.

According to a report from February, Amazon will launch the box possibly for under $300. Amazon has not announced a price so far during the event. Images of a rumored Amazon game controller emerged last month, though we saw none of that in the event today.

I think I am going to create a gaming console next year. Then I'll sell it to Disney. Who cares if it's good as long as there are idiots who will buy it. MWAHAHAHAHAHAA!!!

Then I'll tell people that it's "not a console competitor" to make them feel like it's ok to buy it and still keep their current console.

Another s*it in a different box, yeah that is what we need, wel done Amazon....whats the damn problem with today technologies...15 years ago we had only PC and everyone could do the same what we are doing today. Where is the joy of buying a retail box game? Well that happens when every damn amateur gets into the computer game business with only 1 thing in mind, offer dust in the wind for a shi*load of money in return

Maybe we dont know, but they know exactly why they are pushing s*it products like this one, to make us only rent their content...so practically we pay money for owning nothing in RETURN?!?! F**k this, i`ll stick to the good ol'PC

This doesn't matter, what matters is that Adam Sessler is leaving Rev3 Games, and games critiquing in general, after 16 years of it... WAHHH (that's me crying).

While this will in no way play 8th gen games - I just checked the specs over at gamesindustry international and it should have no problem playing some of the most intensive android or ios games out there and even some of 7th gen console games, PSP, VITA ports. I think it would very nice playing Banner Saga, Legend of Heroes, or Bastion. Maybe even a weak Fable.

Oh one more thing, whether you a MS, Sony, PC, Nin, fanboy - this will only make things better for the gamer, competition is gonna be ruthless this gen.

So you can buy it to play games that you've already played? This assertion does little to promote the value of such a device.

They throw in a "dedicated GPU," promote the idea that it can play games, and you're ready to imply that it will be in any way competitive to the primary gaming market? It will be "competitive" in its own niche of media devices because of the fact that it can play games, nothing more.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I agree that competition is a good thing for the industry, but are people really going to buy this to play android games? maybe not, but if it can be hacked to run XBMC or even SteamOS, then i will buy it in a heartbeat.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> The are not really coming out with a gaming console, it is more of a Ruko but with bonus games. Kinda like xbox one - they are focused on gaming but heavy on social, media apps. This will be the other way around, and why not. Why spend 99$ on a roku when this amazon thing looks so much better.

I am sure this device will be hacked for alot of nice things, but steamOS - thats a little reaching - minimum specs are worlds apart. But that is okay I am sure it can run apps just fine like a tablet.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I know SteamOS may be pushing it, but for someone like me that has a beefy gaming rig, all i want is something that can stream my games to my living room, which is what i am really wanting SteamOS for. A lightweight linux distro that can compliment my existing gaming PC.

wow even this thing is getting Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour. I wish Gameloft would put their Modern Combat and Nova series on the PSVita. That thing needs a great FPS badly. COD, Resistance and Killzone are sub-par.

I get this, and it actually kind of makes sense. This competes with Roku and Chromecast and other streaming devices. But you get games, too. Ouya didn't work because nobody really wants to buy a game console for $99 (how good could it be?) and the hardware was outdated when it arrived. I think for a streaming box, $99 is the ceiling, so this still works, AND it offers decent hardware for gaming, plus the Amazon ecosystem. It's not a terribly large investment. Games won't sell this, but they can certainly add a little to the appeal. I just don't see anything in this price range that comes close to offering the same amount of content, so I could see it being a success. Amazon is right, it's not a competitor to consoles. That's a good sign, that they recognize what their product really is.

<< LINK REMOVED >> exactly. for all of the crappy android boxes out there, Amazon seems to be aiming correctly. They're focusing on their store front, programming, videos, movies, streaming apps...etc. Then they focus on games last, which is pretty smart. Rather not have their eggs in one basket. and not just focus on games. focus on media, and combined with amazon is pretty great.

I'm thinking about picking this up just to put it in my daughters room to replace her Roku box. Hopefully with the hardware inside, it will run much faster.
