Aliens vs. Predator unbanned in Australia

Classification Review Board overturns initial ban due to violent content in Sega, Rebellion's actioner; game will be released down under with no changes.

Sega and Rebellion's ratings saga for Aliens vs. Predator has come to a close on a positive note for gamers. Australia's Classification Review Board today reversed an earlier decision to ban the game, giving it an MA15+ rating with no content to be changed or removed.

Humans actually came out on top for this one.
Humans actually came out on top for this one.

The Rebellion-developed game for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC was initially refused classification at the beginning of December for high-impact violence. The board's ruling report stated: "The game contains first-person perspective, close-up depictions of human characters being subjected to various types of violence, including explicit decapitation and dismemberment, as well as locational damage, such as stabbing through the chest, mouth, throat, or eyes."

Following the ban, developer Rebellion made a statement claiming it would not release a "sanitized or cut-down version for territories where adults are not considered by their governments to be able to make their own entertainment choices."

Sega appealed the initial Classification Board ruling and today was successful in getting the game past the Aussie censors, making it legal to sell down under upon its release.

"It is with great pleasure that we announce the success of our appeal," said Darren Macbeth, managing director of Sega Australia. "We are particularly proud that the game will be released in its original entirety, with no content altered or removed whatsoever. This is a big win for Australian gamers. We applaud the Classification Review Board on making a decision that clearly considers the context of the game and is in line with the modern expectations of reasonable Australians."

Aliens vs. Predator will be released in February 2010.

so you mean like the one you wrote. just because you don't like doesn't mean others wont. and for the record. the argument you just posted didn't really help anything. possibly because it was an argument itself. so if you want to ruin other peoples excitement on something they think will be great coming out don't do it here. could you do that for us? ans if you try to say this is an argument as well guess what? its a statement. and for the one who shares this "belief" with him, they aren't morons cause they think this game rocks. they just have different taste then you do. me? i think this game is going to be great. i guess i'm a moron too. people who act like you really make me laugh.

@king_loei LMAO I wish there was a bowing down smiley I could put here for your comment, because your response is impressive. Just giving you due props. Bravo! Your response to his "Look..Look...There's another moron who shares my beliefs so I must be right" link was better than mine.

@nublet1984 What's your point? I read the article. It doesn't prove anything. It's just one more man's opinion; no actual facts, no experimentation. I don't see how it supports your ideas other then the fact that you happen to agree with Jim Wallace. I'm glad that you can find examples of people who think like you, but that alone proves nothing. I don't know if you've ever actually learnt how to form a successful argument? This is simple stuff, dude. You identify your opinion, then you support it with empirical evidence. Also; I am unsure of whether or not to take your comment as sarcasm or as a compliment. I have decided on a compliment, because sarcasm always manages to drag an argument into a chaotic mess of insults and personal attacks. That's just no fun.

@Judza, truer words have never been spoken!!! I salute you sir! Thank you Rebellion for telling Oz censors to get bent, if more devs did this then it would put more pressure on Oz to introduce and R18+ rating!

MASS WALL OF TEXT, 3 POSTS This proves just how inept the OFLC are at classifying games without an R rating in place. As a fan of the series, I will be preordering this ASAP, but I am now a little worried about the priorities of the OFLC with their double take on AVP. Considering that they are now allowing the complete version of AVP, I'd just like to point out to that clown Michael Atkinson, that this annoucement proves that minors still have easy access, and will always have easy access to mature content in this current system of game ratings. The OFLC cannot, does not and will not be able to rate games appropriately without the R rating brought in. If a game is rated R18+, shops CANNOT sell it to minors under the legal age. An R rating also informs the parents of said children; when they see material rated as such, they know that they are buying material that is not recommended for kids. But after the point of sale, it is out of the board's hands. If the parents knowingly buy the game for the kids, and the child is affected by it...THEN IT'S BAD PARENTING. If the retailer knowingly sells it to a minor and are caught, then massive charges can be brought upon them (like selling cigarettes, playboy mags, and liquor to minors). But after the point of sale, it is NOT the responsibility of the politicians to police what I possess in my home. CONTINUED BELOW

CONTINUED FROM ABOVE If I have R18+ movies at home, it is MY responsibility as an adult to ensure that minors in my house don't view them. Same with any playboy mags etc. But in the case of gaming...forget it, we can't even have R18+ in our homes, due to the out of touch SA Attorney General, Michael Atkinson. So either 1 of 2 (3) scenarios happen, 1. The game gets reclassified with a lower rating (MA15+) after some small changes are made. As a result, minors find it easier to get their grubby little hands on a game that they shouldn't be playing (not saying it turns them into murderers, just saying the content is more mature). As a result, the whole point that Atkinson makes about minors finding it harder to get games in the current situation is down the toilet (minors find it easier when the ratings are lax). 2. Gets banned outright. Which in turn hurts the Aussie gaming market (and any politician who denies the $$$ gaming contributes to the economy can go take a flying leap) because people either illegally acquire it through downloading or importing overseas. No purchases are made locally, and all that potential $$$ is basically denied. CONTINUED BELOW

CONTINUED FROM ABOVE As a result, minors still get their hands on it and Atkinson's point is still down the toilet. 3. Or in the case of AVP, the developers tell the OFLC to get stuffed, re-rate the game and treat the Australian gaming populace as adults. When considering the average gamer age is around 30 years old, this is NOT a misleading statement. But then the game is put onto the shelves like in case 1, and minors still get their hands on the game. With an R18+ rating, various games would be reclassified. Am I saying that I'll enjoy all the extra "violence" that comes with it...no. I'm saying it is much more informative for parents to know that the games they are buying are R18+ rated, rather than MA15+. I'm saying that the introduction of an R18+ rating would be a step in the right direction to keeping mature games out of minor's hands, rather than "attempting" to keep games out of Aussie hands. The only way this will ever come about is through the removal of Atkinson. If you live in his area, for the sake of Aussie gaming, vote him out. Then Australia may get out of the "dark age", and "communist view" it holds on gaming. PS. Just a thought for democracy here, but if one man can veto an entire 94% approval for the introduction of an R18 rating for gaming, then it is obvious he is abusing his position and pushing an agenda. He MUST BE VOTED OUT!

looks like Australia are starting to get soft on their approach to graphic games.....possible R18 license in 2013? lol Glad to hear some of my Aussie friends can enjoy the full content of this game :). As for our good friends in politics, I agree with you there plm3d_basic, matter of fact they were MORE violent in the past and than they are now-a-days.

@HighRisk12345 really? they made a game about raping people? thats a little disturbing. I do agree with what you have said though. In a way they do need boundaries.. but more so, i think they just need regulations on what type of games are actually allowed to be developed.. raping? seriously? thats.. just beyond.. just wow

When will politicians stop blaming games, movies, or television for people committing violence. People have been committing violence long before there were electronics. A disturbed individual will enact violent acts regardless. Here's a thought. Blame the people who commit these acts. It's the same stupid mentality that wants to understand terrorists or murderers and why they kill.

"sanitized or cut-down version for territories where adults are not considered by their governments to be able to make their own entertainment choices." Greatest quote ever. It's good to see the industry still has SOME people out there with a pair of big brass ones. I think this is great news, however I agree with "NearlyPrescient", I'd like to know why they decided to change their decision??

I wonder if the Australians have ever considered the economic implications of what they are doing. More games banned means fewer game sales which also impact sales of hardware. It's not doing any favors for their economy.
