Aliens vs. Predator unbanned in Australia

Classification Review Board overturns initial ban due to violent content in Sega, Rebellion's actioner; game will be released down under with no changes.

Sega and Rebellion's ratings saga for Aliens vs. Predator has come to a close on a positive note for gamers. Australia's Classification Review Board today reversed an earlier decision to ban the game, giving it an MA15+ rating with no content to be changed or removed.

Humans actually came out on top for this one.
Humans actually came out on top for this one.

The Rebellion-developed game for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC was initially refused classification at the beginning of December for high-impact violence. The board's ruling report stated: "The game contains first-person perspective, close-up depictions of human characters being subjected to various types of violence, including explicit decapitation and dismemberment, as well as locational damage, such as stabbing through the chest, mouth, throat, or eyes."

Following the ban, developer Rebellion made a statement claiming it would not release a "sanitized or cut-down version for territories where adults are not considered by their governments to be able to make their own entertainment choices."

Sega appealed the initial Classification Board ruling and today was successful in getting the game past the Aussie censors, making it legal to sell down under upon its release.

"It is with great pleasure that we announce the success of our appeal," said Darren Macbeth, managing director of Sega Australia. "We are particularly proud that the game will be released in its original entirety, with no content altered or removed whatsoever. This is a big win for Australian gamers. We applaud the Classification Review Board on making a decision that clearly considers the context of the game and is in line with the modern expectations of reasonable Australians."

Aliens vs. Predator will be released in February 2010.

I wonder if the major pwnage comment they said about Austrailia's Government not being able to let free willed Adults make their own decisions. That was a cock slap cross the face to anyone involved in the initial ban. Either way congrats all round

@HazyNimbus Hey man... I know how you feel. I had a similar explosive post as well with the same "Don't presume to think you know anything about me or my life" sentiment and that his arguments have no basis in logic. Then realised he wasn't worth my time and deleted it. It's not worth the headache. But I can definately relate. Anyway... I think it's time for a beer and round of the most violent game I can find to make me feel better and get some aggression out of my system.

How many developers are crying in a corner right now, wondering why they didn't have the guts to make the same comment Rebellion did. It's also good news that Sega stood by a developer in a decision to not release a game. Congrats to the Aussie gamers.

Sorry about the last comment...those kind of people irk me. As for Australia - yeah, could someone find out WHY the ban was completely overturned? I appreciate the violence in context comment, but I'm not sure if that was the reason or not - with all of you when asking the question why didn't Valve stick to their guns a little bit too? or was it something just not possible with L4D2? Good for gamers, but what is the real repurcussions?

@nublet I am with the others saying "you don't know me" so shut up. I have been the victim of horrible work crime/violence and all I got to say is GO VIOLENCE!!! Ten years later, I'm still recovering and you know what I like to do? Bash video game zombie's heads in with a crowbar. Last I checked, people didn't need to watch TV or play a game to come up with a violent thought or action. My personal favorite of your comment was "i have seen the RESULTS..." so you have not experienced it for real just like your post - unlike the rest of us who have experienced it first hand. People like you disgust me as you sit reading at a computer away from the dregs of society, spewing hypocracies about things you've never experienced. "Violence is increased BY the media?" - explain yourself as this makes no sense. So without violent media coverage...half the crimes would be committed? You make no sense, troll...go away and let the people with more than half a clue handle the heavy stuff.

I'm somewhat confident this title will be more gorey and violent than L4D2... can we get the REAL version now, and not this annoying piece of censored crap? At least its a win for Aussie games... for once.

maybe the Classification Review Board did this as a political move, to prevent angry games from arguing for the development of higher rating classification since they are asked to voice their own opinions on the subject as a recent article pointed out (<< LINK REMOVED >>), but I'm sure they've stepped on too many toes for this to cause gamers not to voice their frustration, but at the very least I'm sure fans waiting for this game will be glad to be getting it

wtf... what the heck is classification for? This game is meant for adults. I would much rather an R18+ rating and keep this game adults-only (translated: banned) than to have 15 year-olds join my matches. FYI I saw this coming weeks ago: << LINK REMOVED >>

I don't live in Australia myself, but I'm glad they're getting this release as it was intended. It actually sort of puts Valve in a bad light now for not doing the same thing (though I love Valve, they should have made a stronger stand). This is a good sign, Aussies. You're one giant step closer to getting that R18+ rating, now.

Obviously those who banned it to start with grew a brain cell or two in the past week. It is about time the ALIEN franchise was revived in the gaming industry, I am sick of the generic shooters such as cod.

my opinion is that the public is mixing up cause and effect when they claim acts of violence to be related to violent videogames. I believe that mentally unstable people did not become mentally unstable because they play violent videogames, but that they play violent videogames BECAUSE they are mentally unstable. So really it is just an unfortunate coincidence that the kind of kids that kill their parents because they took something from him as punishment happen to play videogames alot.

@zloth2 @nevryn @bignick217 @tronzo etc Having seen the results of numerous copycat crimes in the law (which do not receive media coverage) I can assure you the results speak for themselves. Not that you'd know as your extent of experience with violence is probably limited to media - not real life. I can assure you that most people who have encountered real violence have a great disdain for gratuitously violent media. The personal nature of your arguments don't increase the weight of your arguments it merely exposes the tenuous nature of reasoning. Violence doesn't purely come from media but it certainly increased by it. The homogenity of the netboy type's reasoning makes you the sheep - not the people who question violence in media. The false authority with you speak makes you look like the fools you are.

Hmmm, Refuse to make a cut-down version of a game that is mildly likely to be AAA title and appeal the RC decision and the Review board fold like paper. Oh yeah, they know it needs to change.

And this has nothing to do with the video game companies. Why should the companies have to work harder and spend more money to try and convince a ridiculous board that shouldn't exist in the first place? Most of us are adults. As such, we should be able to decide what we want to watch. I like my freedom, after six years in the military I think I deserve it. I pay taxes and I follow the law, but the government needs to get out of the business of trying to preach morality to anybody but themselves.

I hope this is a step in the right direction concerning the classification board in Australia. You guys(aussies) need to step up and start putting pressure on your out-of-hand board. That's the only way things will change, petitions won't do jack. Call those idiots up every day, protest outside their damn building. Firebomb their homes(Just joking...unless you promise not to rat me out when you get caught). It is really silly that your government tries to treat you with kid gloves, when they should be allowing you the freedom to make your own decisions.
