Alan Wake 2 Reaches 1.3 Million Sales, Making It Remedy's Fastest-Selling Game Yet

"A great game can generate excellent long tail sales, and we expect this to be the case with Alan Wake 2 as well."

Remedy Entertainment has announced that Alan Wake 2 has sold 1.3 million copies as of February 2024. In a press release shedding more light on the game's post-launch performance, Remedy said that the sequel sold 1 million units by December 2023 and is now the fastest-selling game released by the developer.

"Alan Wake 2 sold over 50% more copies and over three times more digital copies in its first two months than Control did in its first four months," Remedy explained. "Since its release in 2019, Control has sold over 4 million units, generating net revenue--shareable revenue between Remedy and a publishing partner, excluding taxes and platform fees--of approximately 100 million Euros. A great game can generate excellent long tail sales, and we expect this to be the case with Alan Wake 2 as well."

Now Playing: Alan Wake 2 Review

Interestingly, Alan Wake 2 isn't profitable yet--it launched as a digital-only game with an MSRP of $50 on PC and $60 on consoles in October 2023--but Remedy CEO Tero Virtala explained "the game has already recouped a significant part" of its development and marketing expenses. "We now have two established franchises: Control and Alan Wake, which are linked through the Remedy Connected Universe. Growing and expanding these franchises will be a key part of our future," Virtala said.

Virtala added that Alan Wake 2's performance has helped to support Remedy's other projects like Control 2 and its Max Payne remakes. Alan Wake 2 received its new game plus mode in December 2023 and will expand in the future with two expansions. The first one is focused on Night Springs, the game's Twilight Zone-inspired TV show, and the second one will link up with Remedy's Control.

A critical hit, Alan Wake 2 was one of GameSpot's best games of the year, earning a rare score of 10. "Alan Wake 2 achieves virtually everything developer Remedy Entertainment set out to do," Mark Delaney wrote in GameSpot's Alan Wake 2 review. "It's a game that feels novel and risky that is executed with confidence and a clarity of vision."

Well I hope Remedy is compensated well regardless, since signing up with Epic has denied them all the potential Steam sales they would generate with a game of this caliber. Will likely choose a new partner or self-publish a sequel

Is that a lot? Spider-Man 2 sold 10 million and it's limited to one console with 50 million owners.

@mooglestar: Spider-Man 2 cost significantly more to make - approximately 300 million dollars and it needed to have sold about 7 mil copies in order to break even.

These are completely different beasts and not really comparable. Spider-Man is a huge mainstream brand. Alan Wake is an indie IP.

@boobytrap: The fact that Alan Wake 2 is also on PC and Xbox actually gives it somewhat of an advantage though doesn't it? I mean, how many more potential customers is that? Not to mention it had solid marketing/buzz and awards. And if Sony sold 10 million copies of SM2 at $70 that's roughly 700 million (obviously there's other factors) so I think they did more than alright.

Not taking anything away from Alan Wake 2 by the way. I think it looks great and I'll play it sometime this year.

@mooglestar: I still think it’s irrelevant how many platforms it covers. It doesn’t get any more mainstream by being available on multiple platforms. Even RE4 remake, being a huge brand and multiplatform, sold 4 mil copies for the same period of time (now sitting at 6.5 mil - still way less than SM2). Alan Wake is not a big name per se, it’s a niche IP so to speak. I think even anything above one million is a big achievement for them. Also, very few mainstream players pay attention to these awards. They did help promote AW2, but not in terms of sales.

@boobytrap: I think given what I've seen and heard, the game it deserved more sales than it got. It being on multiple platforms is certainly not irrelevant to the sales though. If it was only on PS5 like Spider-Man 2 how many sales do you think it would have gotten?

@mooglestar: the game is incredible, but it is what it is. You can’t make people buy it if they’re not that familiar with the IP. Even I was not familiar with it and specifically bought and played the remaster of the original to familiarize myself with the series before playing the sequel. But that game was released 13 years ago. There are some players out there who were not even born yet or were very little. It’s a huge time gap.

Yes, the game would’ve sold even less as a console exclusive. It’s pretty obvious. I still believe you compare 2 incomparable games. They’re not even the same genre: survival horror would never be as popular as action/adventure (heck, even RE4 remake is far behind SM2 in terms of sales). Especially, when it’s such a massive brand like Spider-Man.

@boobytrap: In anticipation of the sequel I actually played the remastered first game (first time). Honestly it did feel understandably dated, but it was enjoyable enough to finish. Still I saw the potential and followed that playthrough with Control. So I'm well prepared now.

I agree that they're very different games.

@mooglestar: I enjoyed that remaster as well. Honestly, the sequel plays nothing like that in a good way. The only similarity is that flashlight technique that migrated into the sequel as well. The rest is pretty different on many levels. Well, the original was more of an action game in that regard. The sequel is real survival horror.

I’m not sure how that remaster helped them promote the sequel though. I have a feeling some people, who played and didn’t like it, didn’t give the sequel a try and it’s a shame, as both games offer completely different experiences.

@boobytrap: It could go either way probably. Might turn some people off, or entice others. I was just kind of in the middle but I reminded myself of how old the game was. Can't really be judged by today's standards. I'm glad to hear the differences with the second game though. Sounds better.
