Age of Empires coming to Android and iOS

Real-time strategy series Age of Empires will make its iOS and Android debut.

Microsoft's Age of Empires series looks set to appear on iOS and Android devices this year as a result of a licensing agreement between Japanese developer KLab and Microsoft.

The Age of Empires series is coming to mobile.

Japanese newspaper Nikkei (gated link), reported that Microsoft has struck a deal with KLab to develop Android and iOS versions of its first-party games.

A Microsoft representative has confirmed with GameSpot that a mobile version of the Age of Empires series is being developed for mobile devices as a result of the partnership, with no other games currently announced.

The mobile version of Age of Empires will follow a free-to-play model, and will be released by the end of the 2013 financial year.

The Microsoft representative told GameSpot:
"Today, KLab Inc announced a licensing agreement with Microsoft Corp to develop a mobile version of Microsoft Studio’s 'Age of Empires' franchise…some reports included incorrect information about additional Xbox Live-based games on iOS and Android, but there are no further announcements beyond 'Age of Empires' at this time."

If it's anything at all like AoEII, then I'm sold. I've been wanting that game on my phone for a loooong time.

Hopefully the inevitable micro-transactions don't pollute it too much.

A classic Microsoft flagship title(s), to be sure. Strange then it's not coming to Xbox Live or Windows Phone in some form or other. Guess the free-to-play mobile market on Android and iOS is more profitable, and where the profit is, M$ is sure to follow.

It's a great series, Age Of Empires as always been a great game, never disappointed me so far and I think that it's really great that the game moves to Android and IOS because it will be great for the company and also for the fans of that game, and who knows maybe we haven't seen the last of Age Of Empires, maybe we can see an Age of Empires IV which in my opinion would be great.

Slightly concerned though. I read elsewhere that the company doing the conversion is not known for doing the best quality work. I fear this may be one more notch on the bedpost of badly ported games :( . If done right though, I'd be curious enough to download and play.

@deadpeasant Yeah. A decade ago you could only run a game such as snake or something on phones. Now you can play a lot of console quality games(i.e N.O.V.A., CoD zombies, Raven Sword) on your phone or tablet. Its kind of weird but fun.

@commander1122 Because Ensemble Studios "died" some years ago. Think about it, Ensemble did a really nice job with all the AOE titles, if Microsoft tries to do it without them, how do you think the next AOE will be?
